It’s kind of a hard comparison to make for me and perhaps even a little unfair. David only had the role for two episodes and we never got to see him interact with the other characters of Knots as Gary. Ted obviously had the role much longer and is synonymous with it.
Based on what I saw of David’s performance on Dallas I think he would’ve been fine in the role long term. As pointed out he played the black sheep aspect of the character very well. I thought his chemistry with Joan was good but ultimately she and Ted were better matched.
