Valene and Karen basically had to give Gary encouragement to do the right thing. Gary did stand up to J.R. and did defeat J.R. on this by forcing an onshore drill at a more expensive cost for Ewing Oil, but J.R. then started posing to the Californian media as a oil man who was environmentally conscious and doing the right thing, so J.R. still got his own back and boosted his own media image and that of Ewing Oil.
