The Ewings are in still in the process of becoming a full-time soap opera, and while the stand-alone episodes from the previous seasons look like wonderful time-capsules, the combination thereof is a bit hit-or-miss, I find. The Lost Child story plays out to underline Bobby's desire for offspring and the ordeal that follows when that turns out to be impossible. The episode's opening scene looks oddly staged. Bobby and Ray welcome a bunch of cowboys who don't move and don't make a sound; it's almost as if the half-brothers are watching a painting. As soon as the cute little boy from the prairie showed up I braced myself for a fair amount of schmaltz and home truths - unfortunately, the episode didn't prove me wrong. Café-au-lait was the buzzword in The Silent Killer episode, this week, Sue Ellen, Kristin and JR are all happy to find/enjoy/continue their "niche", except that they pronounce it as "nidge". In another scene between JR and Sue Ellen they discuss the meaning of their marriage. Now it's not like I didn't already know, and it's not like she's never mentioned this before, but in this particular episode these words seem to carry more weight as it counterbalances Bobby and Pam's quest for perfect and eternal love and happiness. It's really very good to know that there's something very unsavoury going on under Jock's roof. Pamela has a pre-Dynasty-horse-riding-end-of-pregnancy accident, and in both the Dallas and the Dynasty soap the culprit is a sneaky viper. Oops, there she goes. *thud* But it also looks a bit like a Kirby Anders horse-riding-accident. Pam is at the end of her tether regarding the possible gruesome future of her unborn child (which she keeps discussing with Cliff) and an accident like this could make it all go away. It seems uncharacteristic that she would do something so calculated (and she couldn't anticipate the snake attack) but people are complex and it could have been a desperate/hysterical/subconscious action (as Luke said: "she can sure ride"). Actually, after she had told Bobby about the neurofibromatosis I kinda expected him to address the issue of her "reckless" behaviour. Digger is furious when Cliff tells him that his grandson is living with his old arch-enemy, I wonder if this is going to escalate and force Sue Ellen to settle the paternity issue once and for all. (incidentally, last night I thought I was about to watch a surprise-paternity-reveal in the prison series OZ, and I was like "yes! say it! say it!" but she didn't). Little cowboy Luke and his father leave for Montana and Bobby gives his best Charles Ingalls performance.
