I loved them together. Eric & Stephanie was my favourite couple, by far. They were at such ease with each other. I could so easily tell they they spent a lot of time together in his dressing room to discuss their scenes and be genuine friends and colleagues. John recently said that they always used to make sure there was some conflict in each scene in the background to make a scene more interesting rather than just filler. I imagine Susan liked to do that with all her scenes because she was obviously a thinking actress, analyzing the scenes and what they could be. Rather than just playing it. The writers sure aren't that good that their scripts are that deep!!! So yes, B&B sure lost a lot in 2012. I know I lost interest. I didn't care enough about the remaining characters. Regarding when they were cast. The Stephanie character was first going to be played by Susan Seaforth Hayes and be a minor character. One to just set up the story, then could pretty much just vanish or die. But she couldn't do B&B, so they had to find someone else. That's when Bill Bell thought of Susan Flannery who he had worked with in the 60s-70s on DAYS. He called her up for a meeting. She had at this time left acting to produce instead. Bill Bell managed to talk her into a year on this new half-hour soap. Susan agreed mainly because it was a half-hour soap, like DAYS was all those years ago. By this time, a lot of the other actors were already cast. And Stephanie became such a big character and they got Susan to want to stay.
