Is there another character who could have taken over Westar after Wendell to be the new antagonist till the end? Would it be an existing character or an all-new one? I think Michael Sharpe played by Gregory Harrison during the final season of Falcon Crest is very underrated. I think he could have worked on Dallas. Sharpe could have been Wendell's nephew that he leaves all his shares of Westar to after his arrest. The board is impressed with his background and appoint him as new chairman.
