When US series are translated into other languages, the dubbing author must decide which characters - let's use French to explain it - say Tu to each other and which one say Vous. At first it seems simple, because when it's personal you use Tu, when it's professional it's Vous. It often gets complicated, however, because private and business matters are mixed, especially in soaps. Sometimes characters who initially barely knew each other on the show become friends, so at some point Vous doesn't fit anymore and the dubbing author has to decide when to switch to Tu.
Which characters said Vous to each other in other languages?
I only know about the German dubbing, so I'm curious if certain characters said Vous to each other in many languages?
On Dallas, JR and Cliff always said Sie (Vous) to each other, as did Pam and Jenna, and Bobby and Mark. Within the family, JR and Michelle still said Sie (Vous) to each other after Michelle married James.
On Knots Landing, in the early seasons only Du (Tu) was used in the neighborhood, only later, when more money came into the show, there was also more Sie (vous) with new characters.
On Dynasty, Krystle and Alexis always said Sie (Vous) to each other. Dex kept Sie (Vous) with some of Alexis' children, as he did with Blake and Krystle through his entire run on the show.
Unlike Dallas and Dynasty, Falcon Crest used less Sie (Vous) among the rich folks. Angela and Richard were right at Du (Tu), Angela and Terry also said Du (Tu) to each other.
How much attention was paid to the Vous and Tu in languages where Dallas and the other big soaps were subtitled instead of dubbed?
