Except that stuff that ends up on streaming services rarely recreates the hype of the original TV broadcasts. It could have if streaming had preceded the TV-series-on-DVD-phenomenon. I remember that the news of DALLAS and DYNASTY coming to DVD was quite the spectacle. People who wanted to rewatch DALLAS have already done that and I don't think that their decision to buy/re-buy this cleaned up version has anything to do with availability. We got the volumes, the box sets and the repackaged box sets of both DALLAS and DYNASTY so I guess the confidence in the buying public hasn't wavered yet. And this has happened to many other TV series as well, they just keep re-releasing Little House On The Prairie and that makes me wonder just how expensive it is to produce these sets. Perhaps the bluray set would require some additional promotion or bells and whistles to convince the public that this is something that they really really wanna have. It seemed to work for the Doctor Who bluray collection. If it's made only one diehard Baywatch fan happy to get the bluray version then I would consider it a success. I don't feel sorry for the megacorps who were allowed to grow thanks to our many purchases. They can easily bounce back from the occasional flop - well, not that that's ever stopped them from releasing DVD box sets of TV series that nobody wants whilst totally ignoring our craving for Knots Landing DVDs; a soap opera with so much cultural American historical relevance that Warner Bros ought to be commissioned by The Government itself because Knots is something that could be teached at universities. Of ALL the things corporations could do to support the debate about environmental issues, of ALL the things they could do to significantly reduce the production of waste material, the first thing to tackle are the products that have lots of cultural and artistic value? The kind of stuff that people buy and keep because it's so precious? That's how we're going to save the planet? Most DVDs I buy come in these horribly flimsy DVD cases so I replace them with sturdy ones (bought from an online store that specializes in media packaging) because those beautiful DVDs that represent works of art deserve the maximum protection. Thus creating MORE waste in the process :re:
