Theresa May has promised Tory MPs she will stand down if they back her EU withdrawal deal.

The PM said she would not stay in power for the next phase of Brexit talks on the future trading relationship, at a meeting of the 1922 committee.

But she did not set a firm departure date, according to Tory MPs who were at the meeting.

It comes as MPs seize control of the Commons agenda to hold votes on alternatives to the deal.

Speaking after the 1922 committee meeting, Tory MP James Cartlidge said: "My recollection is that she said she would not remain in post for the next phase of the negotiations, the implication being that once the withdrawal agreement has passed, she would make way for someone else."

Tory MP Simon Hart told the BBC's Nick Watt that Mrs May had said she would want to pass her Brexit withdrawal agreement and then set in motion process to replace her.

Mrs May's critics don't want her to be still in charge for the next phase of Brexit talks, when the two sides hammer out what kind of trading relationship they will have - if her deal is passed by Parliament.

The PM has said she wants to bring the deal back to the Commons this week, after it was previously rejected twice, by large margins.

The BBC's Iain Watson said Mrs May received a "muted" reception from Conservative MPs as she arrived at the meeting.

The reign of the worst Prime Minister in British history is almost over.

Yes - but at what cost?
Before David Cameron became Prime Minister, many commentators said John Major was the worst PM ever, then Cameron held that position until Theresa May turned out to be even worse than him. Going by the Tory Party's recent track record whoever they chose will be worse than their predecessor.

There's now talk of May bringing her stinking, unchanged deal back for a FOURTH vote in the hope the numbers will go the way she wants.

But a second public consultation now that we know more of the facts? Why, that would be a betrayal of the entire concept of democracy wouldn't it?

Exactly! It would be a betrayal of democracy to ask us plebs in the general public a second how we feel the Brexit issue should progress but it's perfectly fine for her to as Parliament the same question FOUR times. It just demonstrates the lack of respect Theresa May has for ordinary people.

For months she has been trying to persuade the Brextremists in her party, such as Jacob Rees-Mogg and Iain Duncan Smith, to change there mind and vote for her dire deal but she won't allow us plebs in the general public can change our minds too.

Yesterday, was a great day to bury good news and guess what, that's exactly what happened. Vote Leave admitted that it lied, cheated and broke the law to get people to vote to leave the EU and Michael Gove and Boris Johnson, who where leading participants in that campaign probably knew about it. Threfore, when that other liar, Theresa May, says leaving the EU is "the will of the people" it's not true because it has now been established that the referendum result was tainted and therefore should not be considered as being reliable.

I just feel like NI especially is getting lost in the process of all this madness, however I'm still trying to fully understand the supposed power the nasty DUP have over this. It's very confusing.

Same here. I'm also not sure about the implications there if May steps down. Will they still have their ten votes?

However, I am enjoying some schadenfreude at the karmic rough ride they're now giving her. After all, she gave them whatever power they now seem to hold in Parliament.

Arlene Foster is singlehandedly the most detestable creature we have over here. She is known among certain locals as The Human Turnip.
