To me, Dallas and Dynasty both ended in 1985. That's where I end the rewatching on my DVDs.

Totally agree with you. I think I’ve said this before on other threads but Bobby’s death would’ve been the perfect ending for the show. I still consider it the very best episode of the entire series and the best cliffhanger as well. Bobby’s speech on his deathbed, telling them to be a family and to be good to one another, all of them gathered around him as they put personal differences aside, it’s the perfect send off for the show imo.

I can respect that. There are a lot of things I do like about it myself. I enjoy seeing a Dallas universe without Bobby. It’s interesting to see how his death affects those left behind and how they have to deal with it. I also like the last few episodes of the season. The multiple cliffhangers all happening at once is amazingly done.

It was known that Patrick Duffy was leaving, and it signaled the end of Dallas as I knew it.
It is too hard for me to watch that episode again
Season 8 was really strong, maybe the best post Jim Davis season. There was a real possibility that Cliff could win, and
that he would be running Ewing Oil.
I wonder if the result would have been different if PD had stayed, with a new plot in which
Cliff is running Ewing Oil, The Ewings are in disarray, and Jeremy Wendell playing both sides
against the middle. Jock returning?

It certainly was the end of DALLAS as we knew it. And perhaps the Season 8 conclusion should have ended the show. (But, as I always say, I'd hate miss Season 10 [DVD count] as I'd hate to miss the Wes Parmalee plot and that year -- maybe DALLAS should've ended with Pam's exit, or at least with Sue Ellen killing JR in his high-rise suite).
I'm also curious: who do you see Season 8 (DVD) as being the best post-Jim Davis year?

I think it’s generally felt that season 8 was at the time the WORST season post Jim Davies. The show peaked at Bobby being shot and was never quite the same after.
Season 8 has some good stuff but the Jenna trial drags on for an eternity and with the new guest characters it’s not the same show. And of course the whole Donna Read fiasco.
So it seems you find Swansong hard to watch because PD is leaving? It’s an ending of sorts? If you actually watch it all the way through is there anything actually dislike?
Again for the majority it’s the single best episode of Dallas. The music, the performances, everything just comes together.

The introduction of Jason was interesting, and it provided a somewhat plausible scenario
for the new Ewing-Barnes feud.
It might have been even more interesting if Jason was alive and had the documents.
Jenilee Harrison was better than expected as Jamie
Many people like season 6, and it was indeed quite strong.
For me, the scenario of splitting the company in 2 is just too hard to believe,
It would be virtually impossible in the real world.
Dallas was #2 in the rankings in season 8
It would never again place in the top 10, except for the dream season #6.
Viewer point sin season 8 fell sightly from season 7, was still higher than season 6
and would never again reach the 20 million figure,, not even the 19 million figure.
When PD left, the damage was done.

If Season 7 was a great season in the old-fashioned "Dallas"-style, with things happening organically, Season 8 always seemed to be as written with the style of "Dynasty´s" second season: one big cliffhanger in every episode, many characters dying or in danger, lush parties with designer costumes... So it wasn´t the Dream Season the one imitating the rival show, Capice already was on his way to "glamorize" the series. Maybe Katzman hated this and decided to do that other show and left?
"Swan Song" is my second favorite episode, and maybe it´s because of the "dreamt" sequences. You can´t just overlook it. When I first watched it, I didn´t know about Bobby´s resurrection and the impact on me was big. A longer episode, with hi-quality score, costumes, shot on Dallas, and bringing back beloved characters like Katherine and Dusty? And Victoria crying in full "for-your-Emmy-consideration" mode? A dream come true. Even Priscilla was remarkable in her monologue with Bobby.

Yes, it's hard to convey the feeling of watching without knowing that it would all be undone.
There's a case for that, but I do think the aftermath was handled quite well and I wouldn't want to have missed that. Some have criticised the way the season went after that but the original cliffhangers were strong and, as we've discussed ad nauseam, I think most would agree that the real problem with the "dream season" was not so much the season but the dream.
