James Handy has died. His violent death is now garnering him more attention than he received during his lifetime.

James Handy was one of those actors whose face was familiar, even if one couldn't always pin it to a specific role. He was most last seen in Top Gun: Maverick, having made his on-screen debut in Ryan's Hope. Soap fans will likely remember him best as Matt's father on Melrose Place. He didn't play a particularly likable character there—a type of role for which he was frequently cast, as he is also known for his recurring role as a racist superior on NYPD Blue.

Indeed, I couldn't even place him by name until you jogged my memory. I've read a couple of news articles about it today and I'd certainly have recognised him. He appeared to have barely changed these last 30+ years.

Such a tragic and violent death.

Yes, he seemed to do most of the heavy lifting in the "if only you wouldn't flaunt your homosexuality" department.

When I think of the character, though, my mind always jumps to his final episode where there was a kind of resolution. There were a couple of really nice scenes in there, and I think the character had one of the most touching deaths in the series.
