Interestingly, upon rewatching the pilot series, JR's basically a grumpy, humorless guy until Barbecue, where he dons the rose-colored glasses, hits the bottle, turns on the charm and acts like the JR of the next several years (although I think the attempt to apologize to Pam in the hayloft, leading to her fall, was still out of character compared to later years).

I don't know if I've been in a generous mood or what, but when we re-watched the series this time around, I really enjoyed the Wes Parmalee story line much more than I used to.

And to put a finer point on Swami's quote:

Ray is one of the few people who are at least open to the idea the Wes Parmalee is Jock Ewing back after the helicopter accident. He has his doubts, but he at least goes to see Wes.

When Parmalee asks Ray if he believes him, Ray's response is, "I know what Jock Ewing would do. I'm kind of curious to see if you do the same."

Try this the next time you are doing a rewatch. Don't think, "They are bringing in Steve Forrest to replace Jim Davis". Instead think, "They are bringing in Wes Parmalee to shake things up and create some controversy for the fun of the show."

You'll enjoy the storyline a lot better that way.
