Anne Bowen's arrival in 1990, should have been sooner.

I liked Susan Blakely playing Danny's mother Anne Bowen. When I saw her I thought she somewhat resembled Susan Sullivan.

Anne should have arrived sooner than she did and they could have still kept Danny's true paternity until the series closure.

Anne could have shown up at any time to introduce Richard to his adult son. I liked the chemistry between her and Richard better than the chemistry between her and Michael. I would have loved to see Angela interact with Danny, but unfortunately, that wasn't possible in season 9.

Regarding Anne's run on the show, I always wondered if the budget wasn't sufficient for more than three episodes with Susan Blakely, or if the plan was for her to simply disappear after telling Michael the truth about Danny. Leaving her son at Michael's mercy and not returning after the rooftop drama made her seem like a pretty bad mother to me.

As for Susan Blakely: I know she left Rich Man, Poor Man to pursue a big movie career that her co-star Nick Nolte actually achieved. But why didn't she appear in one of the big soaps earlier? Was she initially so focused on a potential movie career and didn't want to risk it for a soap role, or did she go to soap auditions and simply not get any parts?

The three episodes Susan Blakely towards the end of the show were; 'Vigil', 'Dark Streets' and 'Crimes Of The Past'. She turned up as Sharpe's ex wife Anne when Danny had the car accident, meant for his girlfriend Sydney. God knows why Anne considered remarrying Sharpe, that is until she discovered he was behind the car accident. Her presence was all too fleeting. Anne really had to reveal the family secret, she kept for 21 years. Of course Angela was pleased to have another heir, for her generations old wine business.

Sydney, Pilar, Danny and Lance are in the mansion sunroom, tasting recently produced cabernet. Time has lapsed since the contaminated wine publicity stunt Michael Sharpe concocted, to buy the Falcon Crest business cheaper; (a scene from season 9, 1989 – ‘90):

Lance pours the cabernet into four glasses and says, “I think this is what is known as the moment of truth guys.”

Danny: “Yeah!”

Danny then proceeds to gulp the glass of wine.

Lance: “Oh take it easy. You gotta slow down. Savour it!”

Danny: “Well I admit I’m not a connoisseur but ya know this is pretty good.”

Lance tops the glasses up again and remarks, “This is about the finest cabernet we ever produced.”

Lance: “To Falcon Crest!”

Syndey, Pilar and Danny also toast to Falcon Crest.

Danny: “I’ll have this place back on its feet yet.”

Lance clears his throat.

Danny: “Okay we’ll have this place back on its feet but I have helped haven’t I.”

Lance: “Yes you’ve helped.”

Pilar: “Not as much as you think but yes you’ve helped.”

Danny: “Look I know I have a lot to learn but in a couple of years I’ll be a wine making ninja.”

Sydney laughs.

Lance: “You think your father will allow that to happen?”

Danny: “He has to.”

Pilar: “I don’t think Michael Sharpe has to do anything.”

Danny: “Look we’ve come this far I mean if we stick together he has to come around.”

Lance looks over at Pilar. Sydney glances at Lance.

Danny: “I admit my fathers’ not perfect but he cares about me. We were eyeball to eyeball this morning and he blinked.

Lance replies, “I hope that’s true Danny. I really do!” He then gives Danny a pat on the back.

Lance: “Meantime Pilar and I have to hit the road.”

Danny looks a bit agitated.

Lance: “A little thing called marketing.”

Danny: “A ha!”

Lance: “Now that we have a good product we have to convince people to buy it.”

Pilar: “Which may not be all that easy but we are going to give it our best shot.”

Lance: “We will make it happen. Congratulations!”

Lance shakes hands with Danny and points to Sydney, saying, “Be good!”

Pilar: “Congratulations!”

Danny: “You too!”

Pilar: “See ya later honey.”

Sydney: “Bye bye!”

Anne Compton (original name in the script), renamed Bowen, was not part of the season 9 bible. The character was developed during the scriptwriting process for these episodes, as was the reveal of Danny as Richard's son. We addressed the issue in depth in our newsletter series "The Secret FALCON FILES". Again, the season 9 showrunners had no structured long-term plans for the season and just randomly "developed" things out of the blue from one writers' meeting to the next week by week, which is why the season constantly shifts focus, becomes partly episodic, ignores prior story points and oftentimes introduces new storylines just to abolish them again almost in the same breath. That is what transpires from the "development" papers (actually false labeling for this kind of "bible") and early script drafts. It's so different from the show's earlier structured development and writing (and from any usual production habit), hence so bad.

I think the showrunners felt, while season 9 was on the air, that the series was going nowhere, and with CBS threatening to pull the plug, hiring Susan Blakely was probably one of their last attempts to adhere to the former glorious special guest star policy of the show although Susan Blakely was hardly of the same caliber as Lana Turner, Celeste Holm, Kim Novak or Leslie Caron, just to name a few prior celeb guests.

I tried to interview Ms. Blakely years ago, and she was receptive at first. However, when she got my questionnaire, so she could prepare for the interview (something I got used to upon the request of various of my early interviewees), Ms. Blakely's husband (!) wrote back to me that she chose not to comment and is no longer available. I thought it was a cowardly move to have someone else reply on her behalf. My questions certainly weren't offensive, particularly because I thought her performance was one of the few decent things about season 9, so I can only assume why she changed her mind. Of course, my questions didn't gloss over season 9, but none of them contained anything that would have criticized her performance (which was rather good, I think, considering the trashy material the actors were given at that time). But, of course, it included some questions about how the cast got along and how talent got along with the show's current regime, which I think is legitimate for quality journalism.

I assume those two questions, which were the only ones that addressed the final season's severe problems in a very moderate way though), were a problem for her:
  • You appeared in the final season of “Falcon Crest”. After you left, there were only three more episodes until the series was canceled. How was the atmosphere on the set in general while you were there? In particular, did the cast and crew feel that the end of the series was inevitable? If so, what did they think and say about the reasons for the show’s decline?
  • As you may know, Susan Sullivan — who you worked with on “Rich Man, Poor Man – Book II” — was one of the “Falcon Crest” core cast members for more than eight years. The new producers, who took over the show in its final season, wanted a new direction and wrote her character off. Was Susan Sullivan’s dismissal a topic the cast and crew talked about, particularly since her salary covered the paychecks for three new cast members (Gregory Harrison, Wendy Phillips and Andrea Thompson)?
I always use the same introduction when I send my questions before doing the actual interview, stating that the interviewee is free to drop any questions they don't like. I wonder what she was thinking, but I thought the way she backed out was utterly unprofessional.

Fun fact - Susan Blakely starred together with Marc Lindsay Chapman (Charley St. James) in a 1986 pilot of a planned Sci-fi/horror TV show called "Annihilator".
I actually liked this pilot, it had great horror and gore elements for a TV movie at the time, but sadly the show wasn't picked up by a network - so a ton of questions remain unanswered at the end.

Geoffrey Lewis is also in it, so it had quite a few people who were or would later be on Falcon Crest. :)

Sadly it's been only released on VHS tape, so all i have is that videotape, wish it came out on DVD as well.

Edit: okay, apparently it's on youtube to watch for free:
