Scarred? If they mess with Ross' face and/or body, there will be vengeance!

This does happen in real life, so this is a real life storyline, and isn't the whole point of a soap to reflect what's going on in the world?

Going to Davids for 2lb spuds is also real life, when was the last time that happened?

In the recent past, soaps had a healthy, rough balance of
Melodramatic OTT, humour and a good dose of real life, however in the last few years it feels that most of the soaps just focus too much on real life issues, take Corrie for example, in the last few months you've had, Bethany's grooming storyline in which it heavily implied she was ganged raped (the storyline itself was brilliantly done) very soon her uncle will also become a victim of rape and in between all of that you've had the very violent, drawn out and frankly tiring Pat Phelen storyline, which has gone beyond what The Richard Hillman storyline did 15 years ago.

Its too much sometimes, this is why I watch Hollyoaks, as when it does an issue, real life based storyline it normally does it justice and in the background of that storyline, you've got some serious crazy, OTT storylines, its the only soap where most of the characters in their late 20s are already grandparents! :-D its managed to keep.its humour.

I'm not suggesting that we should go back to the days when Corrie's main rival was Crossroads and everything was tea and crumpets and black and white, but please. Enough of the issue based storylines for a few months at least soap producers.

Probably last Saturday, when the documentary cameras weren't rolling.

What do viewers expect of Emmerdale? People "only" sitting down with a cup of tea, and talking about how amazing life is, which wasn't even the case 30-40 years ago, let alone now.

That would be so unrealistic, no-one would watch. :D

I would. If you want to see how it is done then tune into Radio 4 and the Archers.

I don’t really mind what they do so long as the characters are interesting. I just don’t think “dealing with issues” and realism are necessarily the same thing.

Even the 70s and 80s dealt with strong issues such as rape, murder, suicide, sudden arrival of illegitimate offspring. Even addiction when Annie Sugden became reliant on tranquillisers in 1988/89.

But you can find most of those things in an Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes novel, or a Chekhov or Shakespeare play. Were those works "dealing with issues" or simply portraying things that have always been the stuff of drama, realistic or not?

Tonight, Ross bought a packet of oven chips from Davids. Ask, and you will receive. :D
I wonder if Ian McLeod pops on Soap Chat.

I imagine the chips were McCain, product placement and all that jazz.

Most of those sort of storylines happened every few years or so in those days, today its a constant barrage and bombardment of death, destruction and misery with no rest period between it all.

In Emmerdale's first seventeen years it dealt with the issue of rape twice to my knowledge, the first being Sharon Crosswaithe in 1973 she was raped and murdered all off screen, then a few years later in 1977 the rape of Wendy Hotson, it wouldn't be until 1992 before the subject was revisited again in form of child abuse.

Sometimes a period of light hearted drama wouldn't go a miss, or tackling a subject that hasn't been dealt with before like Liv's asexuality for instances.

Its not Emmerdale its all the soaps in general, they've lost the fine balance between Melodrama, Humour and Reality, nowadays its just
Murder, Rape, Misery, Violence on one side and on the other you had the long, dull, drawn out bin collection storyline which took up the first quarter of 2017, on the other side of the coin.

What's wrong with Bernice popping round to see her step-sister; Victoria for a cuppa to discuss life and how wonderful it can be?
Or seeing Diane and Eric lay flowers down on Val's grave and talking to her in the great Woolpack in the sky?

Not saying it should be this way all the time, but there should be a fair balance.

We do see characters visiting their late relatives gravestones. We also see people getting on and off of buses. They can't be expected to show everything the characters get up to in half an hour each night.

As for storylines dragging on, that's very true. Pregnancy storylines for instance. 9 months they can drag on for....

I must admit after all my doubts i take my hat off to Emmerdale, the acid storyline with ross has been excellent and so well done, i take my hat off to the show and am glad to be proved wrong.
