I've been fighting the urge to buy a record player and some LPs for years. It seems like a potentially fun, retro-hip hobby. I always talk myself out of it though, since I recognize my urge to spend money on things I don't need and probably won't use ...

Well so much for that.

20211126_173301.jpg

I bought the record player because I like its aesthetic, and was pleasantly surprised at its sound quality.

I bought two Madonna albums (True Blue & Bedtime Stories); two by Panic! At the Disco; Guardians of the Galaxy vol 1; "best of" albums of ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, and Marvin Gaye; and Christmas albums by Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole.

There's a record store near me that sells second hand LPs, so it will be fun to stop in and see what I can find. The ABBA and Fleetwood Mac albums are both vintage.

I’ve been buying various 12” records, mainly from the 80s. Some of them are not available in Spotify or they don’t appear on YouTube. Some are purely for my own nostalgic needs. I had all 12” records released from The Thompson Twins. Traditionally, they released four 12” records from their first three albums as a trio. With the third album giving us fans eight 12”records.

Yesterday a parcel arrived giving me my collection of four from ‘Into the Gap’

Hold Me Now

You Take Me Up

Rearranging them gives us something that feels complete. E85793FE-B952-4D4C-9BA9-C261737C20AA.jpeg

These look amazing. I love how cohesive the covers are. There's no mistaking it's from the same artist and era.

I lucked out and recently added two of my favorite albums to my vinyl collection; when I had looked for these earlier, they had been very expensive. There's still 6 Madonna albums I don't have on LP yet, but the only one I really want is "Erotica" which appears elusive and very expensive.

20220329_073349.jpg

Early on, I noticed some, but not all, of my LPs were skipping; I even returned a few, thinking they were defective. When the problem continued, I consulted a friend who is something of an audiophile. He said I had two options: buy a better record player or tape a penny to the arm. Needless to say ...

Doing a little research into this 'hack', I quickly find that vinyl afficionados are rather aghast at this, saying that it will damage the records. That may well be, but I don't listen to them often enough to worry about it for now.

I'm still (or trying hard to) hold on until the re-releases later this year, but already I've failed by buying LIKE A VIRGIN. I wanted this because it has INTO THE GROOVE on it, which is something I think wasn't available in the States. I also bought the IMMACULATE COLLECTION; I'm sure that won't be part of the releases later when they finally arrive.

Haha!!

I did this quite a lot back in the 80s but was never sure if I was ruining the vinyl at the same time. I can't have done much damage because I don't remember not doing it or stopping doing it.

Happiness is not a cover version, it has the Pointer Sisters vocals, and the remix of Autumn Changes appears to be an unofficial release.

The continual rise of vinyl sales in the UK has led to record store chain HMV's highest profits since entering administration in 2019.

With a renewed sales focus on vinyl and in-store signings, HMV - now owned by Sunshine Records and Entertainment - has been enjoying reaping the benefits of a surge in the sale of vinyl LPs over the last few years.

In 2022 alone, sales of vinyl grew for the 15th consecutive yeat to 5.5 million units, their highest level since 1990, according to Official Charts Company and BPI data. This was most certainly bolstered by the popularity of blockbuster albums like Taylor Swift's Midnights, Harry's House by Harry Styles and Arctic Monkeys' The Car on wax.

Sales at HMV's parent company - which also owns smaller chain Fopp - jumped to £150 million in 2022, up from £90 million the previous year, clawing back profit where businesses suffered from various COVID-related lockdowns since the pandemic.

A pivot in HMV's sales strategy has most certainly helped HMV surge to profit in 2022. Now, in-store signings in various HMV chains up and down the country are an integral part of an artists' efforts to promote their new album in release week, with a renewed knowledge that physical sales can help LPs shoot up the Official Albums Chart if given strong support.

Over the last year, artists such as Mabel (whose second album About Last Night became her highest-ever charting album in the UK) and Steps (who claimed their first UK Number 1 album in a decade with The Platinum Collection, breaking an Official Charts record in the process) visited HMV stores on the promo trail. RAYE - who will be aiming for similar glory with the release of her debut album My 21st Century Blues following the success of Number 1 single Escapism. - will be attending similar signings after it drops February 3.

2022 was certainly a big year for vinyl - with eight of the year's Top 10 LPs being released in the last year; the best-selling album on wax was Taylor Swift's hyper-successful tenth album Midnights, which shifted over 89,000 vinyl copies.

I started collecting vinyl about two years ago and currently my collection is up to 386 albums. I have a cool app that keeps track of what I own and sorts them in various ways. I'm currently listening to my albums in alphabetical order by album title. (An idea I took and adapted from Ome.) I started last January and am currently about to start albums starting with "T".

Recently I've been scouring eBay for Christmas albums that my parents owned when I was a kid. I've managed to acquire these:

One other recent nostalgia purchase from eBay:

Part of me wants to know how many I have, but the other part is saying nooooo.

My downfall is the second hand record store we have here in town. I have to limit myself to going there every other month, because I spend too much there. Browsing the store is a pleasant way to spend the afternoon, though and I've found some cool 12 inch singles there to add to my Madonna collection recently.

I've never parted with my vinyl. Nothing beats that needle crackling sound on the record. I've never stopped using the word record either unless I'm in certain company and need to impress.

My collection isn't anything ambitious, just loads of 80s pop/dance singles as well as charity singles like "Do they know it's Christmas", "We are the world" and "Let it be" when they were first released.
A few 12" and a few albums including Michael Jacksons Thriller and The Kids from Fame! :lick:

I've also kept hold of my cassette tapes, (think they were making a comeback a while ago) most of which I've recorded on myself and travel charity shops far and wide to buy cassette players when one breaks.

I've posted on other threads I've kept my VHS tapes too.

Being on here has made me realise what I've been in denial about;
I'm a hoarder,
Terribly old fashioned
And I still live in the 80s

I'll really start worrying when I begin wearing shoulder pads and leg warmers :ribbon:

Lack of space is indeed a problem that I also have like so many others here, I later bought these record stands and placed them in my furniture cupboard where there was a lot of space left, and these stands hold about 50-70 LPs, but it depends on the thickness of the LP sleeve, I bought two and notice that I actually need one more to store them all, but because they are in the furniture cupboard and the doors are closed you can't see them anymore, so now it looks like tidy and neat. ;) :)

I know that I really shouldn't buy too many LPs anymore, otherwise storing my LP will become a problem again, otherwise I will have to select my LP's again, what I want to keep and what I don't want to keep, I don't feel like doing that yet, I have too much memories with them. ;)

That seems like .. a lot. But vinyl, being so thin, fortunately doesn't take up too much space. How full is your storage; or, how much more can you acquire before your allocated space is maxed out?

My urge to buy things is always in deep conflict with my aversion to clutter. I limited my collection to what will fit into a fairly small record holder, and it's probably 75% full at this point. I always have to ponder how much re-playability an album has before I buy it.

I have a cool app

Discogs? That's what I use for my paltry collection; mostly so I can remind myself of what I have to avoid accidental repeat purchasing when I'm at my local second hand record store.

I'm also quite averse to clutter and when my current method of storing them reaches near capacity I'll stop purchasing vinyl. I have one wall of my apartment which is my TV and several two level book shelves. The shelves and the entertainment center that my TV sits on are dedicated to housing my favorite books and my vinyl collection and my record player. The shelves are more vinyl than books. I'd say I could probably fit another 75 - 100 albums. The majority of my collection is second hand. A lot of the albums I've purchased have been under ten dollars. The number sounds like a lot but it's really not taking up much space at all--mostly because I don't have a lot of "stuff" in my living room to begin with.

It's called Vinyl Box but it pulls its info from Discogs.

I came across an interesting discovery clearing out my mom's house while settling her estate: a few albums cowritten and recorded by my maternal grandmother. She passed when I was 13, so I have only dim memories of her voice but it's been surreal to hear her singing.
