Bette is one of those actors whose Oscars came too early. Dangerous is a programmer while Jezebel is great and Bette sort of arrives in that movie, but I'm sure we could all pick several other, more Oscar worthy roles she had over the decades.

Hers was a consolation Oscar for DANGEROUS because Hollywood politics had denied her even a nomination a year earlier for OF HUMAN BONDAGE -- reportedly Warners' didn't want her first Academy Award for a loan-out film.

I've never seen DANGEROUS so I have no opinion on her performance or Oscar, but Davis' entitlement about OF HUMAN BONDAGE is very odd to me indeed. I think it's the worst performance of hers I've ever seen: overblown and the accent is laughable. There are many Davis performances that I think were Oscar worthy, but that ain't it.

From Follies of God

"I don't understand people who have failed to establish that they are needed in whatever role they have chosen to tackle. I do not understand people who are perfectly fine with being just good enough. This, to me, is suicide." Bette Davis/Interview with James Grissom/Photo from Hulton Archive

Bette Davis, the original Maxine Faulk in "The Night of the Iguana," mounts Patrick O'Neal, as Reverend Shannon. The play opened on December 28, 1961 at the Royale Theatre. "Bette exerted most of her energy on hatred and disappointment," Tenn said, "but she was fascinating. Toxic and fascinating."

Rivers was not the best interviewer.

Years later, after half-brother Gary died, Mary Crosby claimed that Gary had admitted he'd made up the accusations about his father because Gary's publisher wanted something juicy.

Oh, Mary .... Mary, Mary, Mary.

Eventually, Gary did stop talking about the abuse from Bing.

I've watched five of Bette Davis' movies and five of Joan's movies... and I have to say that while Bette Davis was more showy and emotional in her performances, I kind of like Joan's more low key/naturalistic acting a bit better.

Both actresses were wonderful, but comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges. Both are wonderful, but so different from one another.

In fact, I think Joan's more low key/subtle take in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane was a wise choice because the twist at the end was more of a surprise.

When Crawford was good, she was very good. Some argue that her more subdued acting has outlasted Davis' theatricality.

I like both styles myself.
