I don't own any of the characters in this story and no copyright infringement is intended.

Season Ten of Dallas has always fascinated me. We get to see the slow reconciliation of JR and Sue Ellen, but unfortunately, we don't get to spend much time inside their heads and so often don't understand what they are really thinking and feeling or what emotions are truly motivating them.

When I asked for new fix ideas, Sarah suggested writing around the events of season ten from JR's perspective. I was so intrigued with the idea, that I decided to give it a go.

This fic will focus ONLY on JR and Sue Ellen and what happens between them. Other characters will appear, but only those who.directly affect their relationship. I will be making up scenes between them as well to help me more fully explore their actions and reactions. Also, if you read this, you'll probably be lost if you haven't actually watched season ten. Each update will revolve around the events of actual Dallas episodes without actually rehashing the episodes themselves.

So here it is, episode by episode, what I think was REALLY going on in JR and Sue Ellen's heads and hearts.

Season Ten Deleted Scenes That Live in My Imagination

Episode Eight: The Second Time Around
***

Sue Ellen felt just awful.

She'd told Miss Ellie about her meeting with Parmelee and that he had seemed eerily familiar to her. Her mother-in-law had been very upset. Sue Ellen truly wished she had never brought it up.

Still…

Miss Ellie wasn't the only one upset. Parmelee was getting further and further under JR's skin. Sue Ellen was enjoying her husband's discomfort immensely.

"What are you grinning about?"

JR's sharp voice broke Sue Ellen's train of thought. "Just thinking about how well plans for the wedding are coming together," Sue Ellen gave him a sweet smile. "It's going to be a lovely wedding, JR. I do so hope you'll enjoy it."

JR frowned and rolled his eyes. "You're loving this aren't you?"

"Why wouldn't I be?" She mocked him. "Pam and Bobby are so happy! And that makes me happy! Doesn't it make you happy too, my love?"

JR didn't bother to answer her. He brushed by her and made his way to his car.

That woman was seriously getting to him. He needed…

He needed to put her in her place and wipe that self satisfied smile off her face. There was one sure fire way to do that.

He was going to see Mandy. She's been avoiding his calls since the night they'd had dinner.

JR wasn't a man who would be ignored. Mandy was getting ready to find that out the hard way.

***

"Sue Ellen, you look happier every time I see you."

"Thank you, Jamie," Sue Ellen smiled at the younger woman. "I feel wonderful."

"That's obvious. Are you and JR reconciled?"

"What? No! Why on earth would you ask that?"

"I just…" Jamie shrugged. "The last time I saw you this happy, you were with him. I always felt bad about being the reason…"

"You weren't the reason," Sue Ellen reached out and covered Jamie's hand with hers. "JR is the reason, Jamie. It's always him."

"Maybe, but if I hadn't opened my big mouth…"

"I would have found out some other way," Sue Ellen shrugged. "Happiness with JR never lasts."

"But you still love him, don't you?"

"Oh. I suppose," Sue Ellen admitted. "I guess I always will. But finally, after all these years, I have built a life for myself that doesn't rise and fall around JR Ewing."

"I'm so happy for you."

"Thank you! Now, it's a beautiful day and a beautiful wedding shower! Let's focus on Pam and stop ruining the atmosphere by talking about JR Ewing!"

***

Thank you, Cassie." JR took the drink from the young waitress and downed it in one gulp. "Another," he grunted, setting the class to the side.

It was over with Mandy. Finally.

He had gone to her apartment to try to talk some sense into her, but instead he'd found her in the company of another man. That had led to a big fight and ugly scene in the lobby.

JR was angry. Mandy had crossed the line. He wouldn't simply let her go. No. She didn't get to call the shots on how their relationship would end. He'd find out who owned Valentine one way or another and make sure Mandy lost her tawdry little job.

But it wasn't because he wanted her back. It was because she needed to be taught a lesson.

***

"John Ross, slow down!" Sue Ellen laughed, "the food isn't going to disappear."

"Sorry, Mom! I'm starving!"

"Work up an appetite today, did you boy?" JR laughed as John Ross brushed by him on his way to the dinner table.

"I sure did! Mom took me and Christopher to the zoo! We walked for miles!"

"The zoo?" JR repeated, glancing at his wife. "Pam go with you?"

"No. She had some last minute wedding details to take care of."

JR's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. Sue Ellen took the boys out alone. There was a time not too long ago that she wouldn't have been able to handle even one of them, let alone both.

He listened as John Ross excitedly told everyone about the adventure, occasionally glancing up at Sue Ellen. She was smiling and…

And beautiful.

She and John Ross seemed very close. How had he missed it? The way John Ross was talking about his mother, you'd think the woman was a saint.

And maybe she was. After all, she'd put up with him for all these years.

"Did you hear me, JR?"

JR looked up and realized his mother was talking to him. "I'm sorry, I was thinking about something else."

"Bad day, my love?" Sue Ellen asked him sweetly. "Want to tell your loving family all about it?"

"No, I don't Sue Ellen," he snapped at her. "I just want to eat my dinner in peace."

Sue Ellen didn't reply. She turned her attention back to John Ross, but her heart was soaring. She'd heard about the little scene between JR and Mandy at her apartment. If it wasn't completely done between them now, it would be very, very soon.

***

JR watched his wife and his son beneath hooded eyes.

He was such a fool.

John Ross was happy. Sue Ellen was happy. They'd spent all evening laughing and talking and watching TV together.

Regardless of how he felt about his marriage, one thing was certain; he couldn't divorce Sue Ellen. John Ross loved and needed his mother. It would be cruel of JR to put Sue Ellen out of the house and bring in another woman that could never take her place with their son. He felt a wave of self disgust wash over him. He'd almost hurt his son very badly with his own selfish desire for a divorce.

He knew Sue Ellen had no interest in reconciliation. And that was fine. They could continue to stay married and lead separate lives.

But he wouldn't take his son's mother away from him.

And maybe he and Sue Ellen could figure out a way to live together in peace. He had to try. For John Ross's sake, he had to try.

Episode Nine: Bells Are Ringing

***

Sue Ellen sat on the couch and watched JR down his fourth bourbon and branch. "Careful, JR. You don't want the family to think we have another drinker on our hands do you?"

"Ha! Don't you worry, Sue Ellen. Your place as Southfork's resident alcoholic is secure."

Sue Ellen narrowed her eyes and moved to stand up.

"Now, hold on, Sue Ellen," JR sighed. "I'm sorry. I know you haven't been drinking. I shouldn't take my frustration out on you."

"You really thought Pam and Bobby would call off the wedding, didn't you?"

"Yeah. I really did. I can't believe Pam went through with it after finding out Jenna is pregnant with Bobby's child."

"A woman in love will put up with a lot," Sue Ellen muttered.

"Yes,* JR said softly. "You know that all too well, don't you?"

Sue Ellen shrugged and didn't answer.

"Sue Ellen, can we talk? I mean really talk. No yelling, no sniping. Just a serious talk."

"Fine. Go ahead."

"It's over with Mandy."

"Really? How sad."

"No sniping," he reminded her.

Sue Ellen turned her head away. She knew he was lying to her. He had an appointment tomorrow morning with Valentine. If he was truly done with Mandy, there would be no need to speak with Valentine at all. "What do you want, JR?"

"A truce."

"What?" Sue Ellen's eyes widened with surprise. "Why?"

"You and I both know there won't be a divorce. If we're going to live together, we may as well try to live in peace."

"Peace?" Sue Ellen laughed bitterly. "JR, I'm sorry your little love affair went sour, but don't you dare think you're going to crawl back into my bed!"

JR slammed his empty glass down onto the bar. "I didn't say a damn thing about getting back into your bed, Sue Ellen. You couldn't get me to make love to you for all the oil in Texas."

Sue Ellen stood up and squared her shoulders. "Goodnight, JR."

"Hold on," he walked over and placed a tentative hand on her arm. "Look, I know…"

"What?" She snapped.

"You and I can never be together again. But, you're important to our son. You're important to this family. I won't push you for a divorce any longer. I just wanted you to know that."

"JR…"

"Don't," he sighed heavily. "Let's just leave it alone and go to bed. It's been a long day."

"Fine. Goodnight, JR."

"Goodnight," he watched her walk away from him with her head held high. "And Sue Ellen?"

She stopped in her tracks, but didn't turn back around to face him. "Yes?"

"I'm proud of you for the way you've cleaned up your act."

Sue Ellen sucked in a deep breath. "Thank you, JR."

He watched her walk up the steps and disappear down the hallway.

She was lost to him. But she was sober. Their son was happy.

That would have to be enough.

***

JR was confused, and more than a little irritated.

He'd gone to Valentine Lingerie to talk to the owner and try to get Mandy fired, but instead, he'd run smack into his wife.

What the hell had she been doing there? Sue Ellen was much too classy to wear that trash. And since the two of them weren't having intimate relations, what use did she have for sexy nighties anyway?

Unless…

Maybe she WAS having an affair after all.

No. No, that wasn't it. There was something going on with his wife, but JR was fairly sure it had nothing to do with another man.

Then why had she been at Valentine?

JR frowned when the very unpleasant thought that she was there shopping for something to tempt HIM crossed his mind. Surely she didn't think she needed to dress up in trash to attract HIS attention?

Had he done THAT much damage to her? That she thought she needed to emulate Mandy to turn him on?

No. He shook that thought away too. He had lashed out and told her that nothing she could do would ever turn him on. But her reaction to his insult, her breezy laugh and pointed teasing had made it clear that she knew as well as he did what a lie that was.

So WHY had she been there?

He suddenly realized that he had forgotten all about his real purpose for going to Valentine. As soon as he'd seen Sue Ellen, all thoughts of Mandy Winger had flown from his mind.

He decided he didn't care if Mandy lost her job or not. He didn't care what his former mistress did one way or the other.

His wife on the other hand…

He was bound and determined to find out EXACTLY what she was up too.

***

Sue Ellen was scared.

Wes Parmelee was a real problem. She could kick herself for going to see him in the first place. Now he felt comfortable going to John Ross's school! And today at the feed store he had been so forward with her!

He made her very uneasy. There was something about him that truly frightened her.

JR was so certain that he wasn't Jock, but Sue Ellen was starting to think maybe he was. And she knew Jock Ewing was a hard man. He would be furious that his family had rejected him, and he would take revenge.

The knot in the pit of her stomach tightened. Parmelee or Jock...or whoever he was clearly wasn't worried about the consequences of upsetting her over John Ross. And that truly panicked her.

She had to talk to JR about it all, whether she wanted to or not. John Ross's safety was being threatened.

She made the short walk across the hall and knocked on JR's bedroom door before she had a chance to talk herself out of it.

The door opened and JR's eyes were wide with surprise when he saw her. "Well, well. Come knocking on my door to beg me to spoil you for other men some more?"

"Please, JR. Not tonight. I need to talk to you about something important."

JR saw the worried look on her face and all his hostility melted away. "Come on in," he stepped away from the door and invited her into the room.

She sat down on the edge of the bed and struggled to find the right words.

JR could tell she was very upset about something. He sat down beside her, careful not to get too close and make her uncomfortable. "What is it, honey? What's wrong?"

He listened intently as she softly confessed to going to see Parmelee and offering him money, as she told him he's visited John Ross's school, and as she described her confrontation with him at the feed store.

"Is that all, Sue Ellen?" He asked her when she finally stopped talking.

"Isn't that enough, JR?" she asked, her voice shaking.

"Alright. You don't need to worry, honey. I'll make sure Parmalee never bothers you or John Ross ever again."

"You… you aren't angry with me for seeing him behind your back?"

"I'm furious with you, Sue Ellen," he told her truthfully. "But screaming and yelling at you over it won't accomplish anything. What's done is done."

"Yes. I suppose so."

JR stood up and walked to the window. "I'm smart enough to know it's partially my fault anyway. I'm the one who made you hate me that much."

"I…I don't hate you, JR."

"It pleases me to hear that, Sue Ellen. I know I destroyed our marriage and we can never… but we need to try to learn to live with each other and get along. For John Ross."

"Yes," Sue Ellen sighed sadly. "For John Ross."

"Well, I'll take care of Parmelee. But you stay away from him from now on."

"I will, JR," she promised, standing up and moving toward the door.

"Sue Ellen, what were you doing at Valentine Lingerie today?"

"I was shopping, JR," she told him.

"No you weren't," he challenged.her.."You have too much dignity and class to shop for such trash."

"Ready?" She laughed at him. "It wasn't so long ago that you told me I had no class and never did. At the restaurant that day. Remember that, JR?"

"I lied," he shrugged.

"Your greatest talent," she snapped at him. "The real question is what were YOU doing there? You told me it was over with Mandy. Already have a new tramp to shop for?"

"Sue Ellen…"

"Nevermind, JR. I really don't want to know."

She left his room and closed the door behind her, leaving him to stew in his regret.

Between the Lines: Season Ten Deleted Scenes That Live in My Imagination

Episode Ten: Who's Who At the Oil Baron's Ball

***

Sue Ellen hummed as she slipped on her shoes. She was truly looking forward to tonight.

She had had an incredibly productive week. Mandy's agent was determined to put the young model in the movies, and Sue Ellen was equally eager to help make it happen. She'd met with Bruce Harvey and let him know in plain terms that she would only release Mandy from her contract with Valentine if he managed to put her in a movie that would be filmed in the orient.

Best of all, she'd arranged to have Mandy make an appearance at the Oil Baron's Ball tonight. JR had been home every night since she'd told him about her dealings with Parmelee. He clearly wasn't seeing Mandy anymore.

Sue Ellen needled him relentlessly, but try as she may, she couldn't seem to get a rise out of him to save her life. Aside from an occasional grunt or eye roll, he acted as if he wasn't bothered by her at all. He was polite and sometimes even considerate. She found herself softening towards him a little.

But tonight would tell the full tale. She'd be watching JR very carefully. If Mandy's presence didn't get a reaction out of him, maybe they would be able to put the other woman fully behind them.

And if JR did react badly to seeing Mandy with another man? Well, at least Sue Ellen would know the truth. And she could take some pleasure in knowing that if JR still wanted the tramp, he wouldn't be able to have her because thanks to Sue Ellen, she'd soon be halfway around the world.

***

JR glanced at his watch and resisted the urge to complain.

Everyone had gathered in the living room, ready to head to the ball. Everyone but Sue Ellen that is. She was running late as usual, which meant they all were running late.

"Sorry to keep you all waiting."

JR looked up at the sound of Sue Ellen's voice and almost choked on his drink. She looked amazing.

"It's alright, Sue Ellen," Miss Ellie smiled at her daughter-in-law. *You look lovely. But we'd all better get going now."

The family filed out of the house and climbed one by one into the waiting limo. Once they were inside the car, JR couldn't help himself. He reached out and briefly touched Sue Ellen's hand. "Sue Ellen? You…"

"Yes, JR?"

*You look… stunning. Just stunning."

"Thank you, JR," she gifted him with a genuine smile.

***

JR was having a rotten evening. First Sue Ellen had turned away from him, refusing to even dance one dance with him. Then Mandy had shown up with some Hollywood bigwig and was strolling around like a proud peacock who owned the place.

Not that he cared. Not really. He could admit that it wounded his pride a bit to see her with another man when she'd ignored his calls for so long, but hurt pride was all he felt. About Mandy anyway.

He knew himself well enough to know a lot of his misery was due to pure sexual frustration. Spending every evening with his wife and not being able to touch her was taking a toll on him. He no longer had Mandy as an outlet and he felt as if he was going to explode. Sue Ellen certainly had no interest in helping him relieve his tension and Mandy's appearance at the ball had made things worse.

Her showing up had caused Sue Ellen to behave very cold toward him. He didn't blame her really. Half the people in that room knew he'd had an affair with Mandy, and here she was, throwing herself in his wife's face. Still, it got under his skin when Sue Ellen ignored him like this. He didn't mind the teasing and the taunts or even the insults. It was the coldness that drove him insane.

There had been an uneasy peace between them since she'd come to him about Parmelee. After tonight, JE didn't know how long that peace could hold.

***

Sue Ellen was furious. JR had spent the entire evening sulking over Mandy and now he was leaning against the bar lost in what seemed to be a very serious conversation with that Stevens girl Cliff had brought to Pam's wedding. He had barely glanced in her direction all night. He hadn't even asked her to dance!

Punk made an announcement for everyone to take their seats and Cliff retrieved his date from JR. Sue Ellen quickly turned her head so JR wouldn't catch her staring at him.

He made his way over to her and grinned. "We should have a dance after Punk's done."

"Why?" She snapped. "Is Miss Stevens' dance card full?"

JR's eyebrows shot up in surprise. Had she been watching him? And was it possible that she was jealous?

"Well, Sue Ellen, I just thought you and I should present a united front to everyone here, what with Mandy…'

"With Mandy what?" She snapped. When he didn't answer her, she looked up.and saw the pale and stricken look on his face. She turned her eyes to the direction or his gaze and suddenly felt faint.

"Oh, no, JR…"

"Parmelee," JR growled.

***

Episode Eleven: Proof Positive

***

JR slammed down the phone and tossed back the remainder of his drink.

Harv Smithfield had been quite pissy about being woken up in the middle of the night, but he'd agreed to be in JR's office first thing in the morning.

JR fixed another drink and headed up the stairs. He didn't know what the hell was wrong with everyone! No one but him and Bobby seemed to be taking this seriously. Well, and Clayton. But his reasons for being worried had nothing to do with Ewing Oil.

He moved down the hallway toward his bedroom and was surprised to see Sue Ellen's door open. He walked over and looked inside her bedroom, seeing her standing by the window. "Sue Ellen?"

"Yes," she didn't turn around. "I left my door open because I wanted to talk to you for a minute. Alone."

"Alright. Should I come in?"

"Please."

JR walked into the room and took a seat on her bed. "Well?"

"JR, I know you have a million things on your mind, but I wanted to ask you…"

"What, Sue Ellen? It's late and I'm tired. Spit it out."

"What did you mean? At the ball when you said we should present a united front because of Mandy?"

"Oh. Just that since we're staying together I think it's important for everyone to know our past problems are behind us. That's all. I thought it would be good for people to see the two of us together...in front of Mandy."

"JR...do you really think our past problems are behind us?"

"Sure. I mean, Sue Ellen I know you want a marriage in name only. I can accept that."

"Really?" She asked doubtfully.

"Sue Ellen, I don't have the energy for…"

"What?"

JR said nothing for a moment. He simply sat in silence on the bed and studied her face. He knew her better than she thought he did. She wasn't the type to put relationship pressure on him during a time when she knew worry over Parmelee was eating him alive. If she was asking him for answers right now, it was because she really and truly needed them.

"JR?" she whispered.

"I know I hurt you, Sue Ellen," he said softly. "Over and over again. And I know this thing with Mandy hurt you the most. But look at you! You're so...full of life again. You've proven to me and everyone else how strong you are, and that you certainly don't need me to be happy."

"I have?"

"You have," he nodded. "I know I'm no good for you. And I don't ever want to see you like you were before...never again. So, I'll stay away, honey. I"ll find my...diversions somewhere else. But I'll be discreet. And I won't bring another woman into our marriage. You're my wife. You're the mother of my son. You belong here at Southfork."

"Do you still love her?"

"Who?" JR laughed. "Mandy?"

Sue Ellen nodded and wiped a tear from her cheek.

JR sighed, stood up, and walked over to stand directly in front of her. "I don't think I ever loved her. Not really. I know I talked a big game, Sue Ellen, but I think I always knew in my heart, and you always knew in yours."

"Knew what?"

"That there was never the slightest chance I'd really leave you for her." He reached out and gently pushed a stray lock of hair away from her face. "I know I can never have things back the way it used to be. But maybe you could smile at me a little more often. Talk to me sometimes."

"And stop being so mean?"

JR laughed and shook his head. "I don't mind the fighting. Keeps me on my toes. I just don't want a pure block of ice for a wife, okay?"

"Okay, JR. I'll try."

"Good. Goodnight, honey."

"JR, wait!"

JR stopped in his tracks and raised a questioning eyebrow at her.

"What you said downstairs...about me not knowing who butters my bread… you're wrong. I'll stand by you, by the whole family until Parmelee is exposed."

"I know you will," he smiled at her. He walked to the door and turned around to take one last look at her. "I'm really sorry we never got a chance to have that dance. Goodnight, Sue Ellen."

"Goodnight, JR."

***

"Are you going to tell JR about your little business venture?"

Sue Ellen looked over at her sister-in-law and shrugged. "Eventually. But I'm not ready yet. Why?"

"I couldn't help but notice that the two of you seem to be getting along better," Pam said. "I thought maybe you were worried that telling him the truth would destroy the budding peace."

"No," Sue Ellen laughed. "I'll tell him. I can't wait to tell him. The look on his face will be priceless. But I can't yet."

"Why?" Pam asked her.

"Because Mandy isn't really gone yet. And until she is, I intend to hold my cards very, very close."

***

"JR, please calm down!"

"I can't calm down, Sue Ellen! With Clayton gone to a damn hotel? The whole world is going to think it's because Mama thinks Parmelee really is Jock Ewing!"

"Who cares what anyone else thinks,JR! Your mother is hurting!"

"I care, Sue Ellen. People believe Parmelee's lies! No one will do business with Ewing Oil and if she's hurting it's her own damn fault!"

"JR…"

"What?"

"Ellie loves Clayton very much. But Jock was the love of her life."

"So?"

"So sometimes women do incredibly stupid things when they believe the man they truly love might come back to them."

"Speaking from experience, Miss Texas?"

She took a deep, surprised breath at his use of his pet name for her. He hadn't called her that in ages
"You know I am, JR," she finally answered.

"Wes Parmelee isn't Jock Ewing."

"Maybe not," Sue Ellen shrugged, "but your mother is very confused right now. You should cut her some slack."

Sue Ellen rolled her eyes when he didn't answer her and turned to head up the stairs. "I need to change for dinner."

"Oh, I don't know," his voice was low and silky. His tone made her shiver and she turned back to face him. He let his eyes sweep over her body. She looked amazing in her bathing suit top and matching jacket. "I kinda like what you're already wearing."

"JR…"

"Go change," he laughed, absurdly pleased that his teasing seemed to have affected her. "And I'll try to be nicer to Mama."

"Thank you, JR."

He sipped his drink and watched her ascend the stairs. He'd promised to stay away from her, but everyday it got harder for him.

***

Sue Ellen stirred the ice around in her glass and tried to concentrate on the conversation. She glanced at the clock on the mantle and wondered for the thousandth time where JR was.

He's been home for dinner every single night since the Oils Baron's Ball. But tonight he was late.

Sue Ellen knew Mandy had planned to talk to him today after her screening with Bruce Harvey. She knew Mandy would offer him anything he wanted to win him back. She'd give up her career, every opportunity Sue Ellen had offered her if it meant JR would take her back.

And judging by the fact that JR hadn't come home, yet, it seemed as if whatever Mandy had offered JR had tickled his fancy.

"Excuse me, Mrs. Farlow. Should I hold dinner?"

"Has anyone heard from JR?"

"Nope," Bobby shrugged. "I have no idea where he is."

"Sue Ellen?"

"Why on earth would I have any idea?" Sue Ellen asked, a tinge of sadness in her voice.

"Fifteen more minutes," Ellie told Teresa. "If JR isn't home by then, we'll eat without him."

"Excuse me," Sue Ellen stood. "I'll go get the boys."

"Sorry I'm late," JR breezed into the room from the kitchen, "there was an overturned tanker that had traffic backed up for miles."

"Well, glad you're home now, JR," his mother smiled at him. "Sue Ellen, get the boys and I'll have Teresa put dinner on the table."

JR glanced up at his wife and was puzzled by the look of her face. She looked...relieved. And somehow pleased. "Everything alright, Sue Ellen?"

"Fine," she smiled at him. "Everything's just fine."

***

JR grinned behind his glass. Sue Ellen was in rare form tonight. She and Pam were chatting away about nonsense, but she kept throwing little insults and barbs in his direction.

She was holding court. Ellie had retired to her room right after dinner, but Sue Ellen had stepped into the role.of family matriarch quite admirably.

"JR? Did you hear me?"

JR glanced over at Bobby and shrugged. "Yes. I just don't have an answer right now. Until this mess with Parmelee gets straightened out, I don't think there's a bank in Texas that'll be willing to do business with us."

"We can't operate like this much longer. I think the answers we need are in South America."

"Me too, Bob. Me too. Probably need to get you down there."

JR turned his head back in Sue Ellen's direction just in time to see her stand up. "I think I'll call it a night. Goodnight, everyone."

JR set his drink down and called out to her, "Hang on, Sue Ellen. I'll walk you to your room."

Sue Ellen nodded at him and let him take her arm and lead her up the stairs. "Well?" she said once they arrived at her bedroom door. "Did you want something, JR?"

"That's a loaded question," he grumbled under his breath.

"What?"

"Nothing I… I just wanted you to know Mandy won't be an issue anymore. She's leaving Dallas."

"Is that right?" Sue Ellen asked sweetly.

"Yes that's right. She's going off to make a movie.Told me today."

"So you saw her?"

"Just to say goodbye."

"I see. Well, I hope you're not too heartbroken over the whole thing. I know how sensitive you can be."

JR started to make a smart assed response, then thought better of it. Mandy was still a sore spot for her. Better just to let it go. "I just wanted you to know," he told her again. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, JR."

She walked into her room and closed the door behind her.

She smiled in self satisfaction at her handiwork. Mandy Winger was gone. JR was alone in an empty bed.

Her plan had worked perfectly. And very soon, both JR and Mandy would know it had been her that had been pulling their strings all along.

So here it is, episode by episode, what I think was REALLY going on in JR and Sue Ellen's heads and hearts during season ten of "Dallas."

Between the Lines: Season Ten Deleted Scenes That Live in My Imagination

Episode Twelve: Something Old, Something New

***

Sue Ellen placed her packages on the bed and walked into the bathroom. She only had a couple of hours before JR got home, and she wanted to make sure everything was perfect.

Mandy was gone. Sue Ellen had sent her off to the Orient with a goodbye and the truth. The other woman had taken the news quite well, all things considered. But of course, why shouldn't she have? She might not have gotten JR, but she got a career most women could only dream of and the opportunity to travel around the world.

Sue Ellen had gotten a lot of satisfaction from finally revealing herself to Mandy. The poor girl had been stunned. She was clearly upset that she'd lost JR, but she seemed to have accepted that he wasn't leaving his marriage.

"Sue Ellen, it's a shame JR doesn't appreciate you."

Sue Ellen smiled a sad smile as she remembered Mandy's words to her. Yes. It was a shame. But maybe after she told him the truth, that would all change. Maybe JR would finally respect her once he knew what she was really capable of.

***

JR knew he should go into the house.

He's stayed at the office late, trying to figure out a way to get the price of crude up. He also was scouring the country looking for a bank that would give him a line of credit, but the Wes Parmelee situation seemed to be making that impossible.

He'd promised Sue Ellen that he'd be nicer to his mother, and he'd tried. But running into her tonight in the kitchen and listening to her defend Parmelee had been too much and he'd lost his temper.

"What are you doing out here, JR?"

He looked up and saw his wife coming through the patio doors. "Thinking," he told her. "What about you?"

"I was looking for you," she said. "I didn't even realize you were home. You missed dinner."

"Worked late," he grunted. "Then ran into Mama in the kitchen."

"Yes. I saw her. She's very upset, JR."

"I'm sorry for that. But she's got to let go of this silly fantasy that Jock Ewing has come back from the grave!"

"JR, I told you, she's very confused."

"Well, she shouldn't be. How could she believe that man might be my daddy?"

"How can you be so sure he's not?"

"I just am, Sue Ellen. I know it in my bones. And Mama should know it too. I understand how much she loved Daddy. But that's exactly WHY she should know. My God, Sue Ellen, if I was dead and some imposter came sniffing around you claiming to be me, I'm damn sure you'd know the difference."

"What are you going to do, JR?" She asked him, deliberately ignoring his last statement.

"I don't know yet. But I'll figure something out."

Sue Ellen smiled faintly and nodded at him. "Yes. I believe you will."

She stood up and started to walk away, but he reached out, placed his hand lightly on her arm and stopped her. "What did you want?"

"What?"

"You said you were looking for me. Why?"

"Oh… yes. Nevermind. It can wait."

She left him sitting alone out by the pool. This wasn't a good time to tell him about Valentine. When she revealed the truth to him, she wanted to make certain that she had his full attention.

***

JR was stunned. Absolutely stunned.

When he'd gotten home from the office, Teresa had told him Sue Ellen wanted to see him. He hadn't been happy about it. They were getting along fine, but she was sticking to her guns about having a marriage in name only. JR hadn't been with a woman since Mandy, and he was almost bursting with frustration. As much as he would like to believe she was planning another seduction, he knew better. Whatever she wanted had nothing with sex and he would end up even more frustrated after being alone with her.

He'd gone up to her room intending to tell her he wasn't in the mood to talk, but when she'd opened the door, she'd looked so beautiful and she was smiling so wide that he hadn't been able to resist her. He'd let her drag him into her room and lead him to her bed. He'd been unreasonably disappointed when she told him she only wanted to show him a video tape.

But his disappointment had turned quickly into admiration and pride.

It had been her.

She was Valentine Lingerie.

While JR had been busy worrying about the price of crude and Wes Parmelee, while he had been distracted by another woman, his own wife had quietly built a business empire of her very own.

And she'd done it all to get Mandy out of his life.

He'd told her it was brilliant. And it was.

Brilliant and devious and glorious. It was exactly like something JR would do himself.

While JR wasn't looking, his wife had blossomed into a real force to be reckoned with.

It was incredible.

SHE was incredible.

And maybe, just maybe, her sole motivation for getting rid of Mandy wasn't to hurt him. Maybe she was jealous. That thought drove JR wild with excitement.

After years of being an emotional doormat, she'd finally stood up and fought back. And she'd won.

And JR couldn't be prouder of her if he tried.

***

Sue Ellen was floating.

She's finally told JR about Valentine. But his reaction had been nothing like she thought it would be.

There was no anger. No screaming. No nasty accusations or name calling.

There had only been a smile and a compliment.

It wasn't what he'd said to her that made her so happy. No. It was the look on his face. He was proud of her! Actually proud!

Sue Ellen was pleased beyond words. She would have been satisfied if he'd been angry and lashed out. But this? This reaction was better than anything she could have ever even dreamed.

***

"Hold on," JR came storming into the house behind his wife. "I want to talk to you."

Sue Ellen stopped walking and turned to face him. "Yes?"

"What was that all about?" he demanded angrily.

"What are you talking about JR?"

"I'm serious about what I told Mama, Sue Ellen. If she moves that man into this house I'm leaving!"

"Alright, JR," she shrugged.

"You and John Ross are coming with me!"

"Oh no we're not," she shot back. "This is our home. We're happy here and I won't let Wes Parmelee force us to leave. And honestly, JR, I can't believe you would just walk away and let that man take over this house!"

"Sue Ellen, I can't live under the same roof with him. Don't ask me to do it."

"I'm not asking you to do anything. Leave if you want."

"Are you crazy?" He roared, completely losing his temper. "I can't leave my wife and my son here!"

"Then I suggest you stop standing around here yelling at me and figure out a way to expose Parmelee as a fraud once and for all."

JR took a deep breath and forcefully shoved his anger away. She was right damn it, yelling at her might make him feel better, but it wouldn't solve a damn thing.

"Don't you worry, Miss Texas. Bobby and I will be getting rid of Parmelee very soon. But if Mama moves that man into this house before we can, you're going to pack your bags and move out of here with me. Do you understand? You like being Mrs. JR Ewing. You like it so much that you moved heaven and earth to make sure Mandy disappeared and I called off the divorce. Well, you got what you wanted. You're my wife. Start acting like it."

"JR…"

"No!" he held up his hand to stop whatever she was going to say. "I might be willing to accept not being allowed into your bed, but you WILL conduct yourself as a proper wife in every other way, you hear me? If I leave, YOU leave."

JR turned on his heels, grabbed his briefcase, and stormed out of the house to his car, leaving a stunned Sue Ellen to stare after him.

***

Episode 13: Bar-B-Cued

Sue Ellen stood still as stone as she watched Miss Ellie run up the stairs and past her down the hall. She turned her attention to JR, and she was taken aback at the look of pure, white hot fury on his face. "JR?"

"Don't you dare start anything with me right now, Sue Ellen," he warned her.

"I… I wasn't going to. Are you alright?"

"How in the hell could I possibly be alright? My mother is actually dating that fraud!"

Sue Ellen took a deep breath and walked down the stairs, stopping to stand directly in front of him. "I'm sorry, JR. I truly am. If.."

"What?" He snapped.

"If you need to leave, John Ross and I will come with you."

JR felt a little of the tension ease out of his body. Sue Ellen had seen the whole scene between him and Miss Ellie and it seemed as if she was siding with him. "Sue Ellen, I need to get out of this house and away from my mother for a while."

"Alright, JR. I understand."

"Want to go with me?" he asked before he could stop himself.

"Do you want me to?"

"Yes," he confessed. He needed her comfort. There was no use in lying about it. "Yes, I do."

"Alright then. Let's go."

***

JR sat on the edge of his bed and thought about what Sue Ellen had said to him tonight.

It was clear his mother truly believed Parmelee could be Jock. As long as she felt that way, it would be impossible for her to cut him out of her life. Especially with Clayton out of the house.

JR had reminded Sue Ellen that she and Clayton had once been very close. He asked her if she'd be willing to talk to her father-in-law and ask him to come home. She'd refused, pointing out that she had used her friendship with the older man against him enough in the past and she had no intention of ever doing it again.

Then she'd suggested that JR talk to Clayton himself. At first, JR had dismissed the ideas, but she convinced him in the end. Clayton knew JR had never had much use for him. A plea from the stepson who had never wanted him around in the first place might get through to him.

JR and Sue Ellen had left the restaurant and driven home in silence, but for once it was a comfortable silence, not an angry one. When they'd gotten back to Southfork, he'd walked her to her bedroom, kissed her on the cheek, thanked her for listening to him, and quickly went into his own room before he gave into the temptation to give her a real kiss and ask her to take him back.

He wanted her. Desperately. But he needed her more. Sue Ellen was the only person in the world who had the power to bring him calm and comfort. He'd promised her he would accept a marriage that didn't involve physical intimacy and he was bound and determined to keep that promise. As much as he wanted her back in his bed, he knew it would only send them down a path of destruction and he needed her too much to risk that.

So he would leave her alone.

But he was going to have to find someone else to relieve him soon. It was his wife he truly wanted, but he would have to make due with someone else. It was what was best for everyone.

***

Sue Ellen sat up straight when she saw JR's car pull into the driveway. It was way too early for him to be home.

JR walked over to the pool and watched the boys play for a few minutes before walking over to take a seat beside his wife.

"Did you see Clayton?"

"Yes."

"Well? How did it go?"

"He won't come back. He said Mama has to decide for herself who her real husband is."

"I'm sorry, JR," Sue Ellen sighed. "But you really can't blame him."

"No," JR agreed. "I really can't."

"Any word from Bobby?"

"Nothing good," JR grunted. "And we're running out of time. If we don't get answers soon, the whole company could go under."

"I wish there was something I could do to help."

"Do you mean that, Sue Ellen?"

"I wouldn't have said it if I didn't," she told him.

"Then do me a favor. At the BBQ, stick close to me, would you?"

"Why?" she asked suspiciously.

"Everyone in Dallas thinks the Ewings are a house divided. People will be watching us carefully. I'd like to show them unity. At least between me and you."

Sue Ellen couldn't help but smile. JR Ewing hated to ever admit he needed anyone...but very occasionally, he was willing to admit he needed her. "Alright, JR."

"Thank you, Miss Texas," he stood up and kissed her on the cheek. "Guess if I'm going to be at home, I may as well put on some trunks and join the boys in the pool."

Sue Ellen took a deep breath and chastised herself. She was softening more towards him every day. She knew it was because he was hurt and vulnerable now. He was doing what he always did when he felt that way - turning to her for comfort.

She couldn't allow herself to be sucked in by him again. She would do as he asked, but she wouldn't let herself get lost in his lost little boy act again. Sooner or later the little boy would be gone and he would be replaced by the scheming, lying man.

"You have to be strong, Sue Ellen," she told herself. "You can't let him fool you ever again."

***

Sue Ellen smiled at the reflection staring back at her in the mirror. She looked damn good, if she did say so herself.

She looked up at the brief knock on her bedroom door. "Come in!" she called out.

"We'd better get downstairs, John Ross is already…" JR's voice broke off when he got a good look at her.

"John Ross what?"

"Uh.. he's already harassing Teresa about when the food will be out. You look... gorgeous."

"Thank you," she beamed. "And you look very handsome. But, your scarf is a little crooked. Come here and let me fix that for you."

JR walked over to stand in front of her and held his breath while she straightened out his scarf. He was afraid if he moved a muscle he wouldn't be able to resist the almost overpowering urge to kiss her.

"All done," she said, moving away from him.

"Thank you," he smiled sheepishly. "Sue Ellen, seriously. I don't know if I've ever seen you look this good. And I have seen you look very, VERY good."

"Thank you," she said again. "Maybe it's because I'm so happy."

JR felt his heart soar. "Is that a fact?"

"It is. A major nationwide company offered to buy out my little company! Can you believe that, JR?"

JR's smile faded a bit. He turned his head away before she could see his disappointment. He wished it was him that was making her so happy, not her business success. "Is that right? You going to sell?"

"Nope. I'm going to expand instead."

JR smiled widely again. "That's my girl," he held out his arm to her. "Good for you, honey. Now, shall we?"

Sue Ellen took his arm and smiled up at him. "After you."

***

Sue Ellen wanted to scream. Everything had been going so well until Cliff had opened his big mouth. JR had punched him and now Pam was in JR's face. So much for putting on a united front.

She reached out to JR, hoping her touch would calm him. "JR, please…."

Her words were lost under the hum of helicopter blades.

"Thank God," JR growled. "Bobby's back!"

'That's my girl'. Soooo proud of her.
Still wanna smack my boy upside the head though.

And even though it doesn't happen I'm gonna throw it out there anyway that if Miss Ellie doesn't want Clayton I'll happily take him.

Between the Lines: Season Ten Deleted Scenes That Live in My Imagination

Episode Fourteen: The Fire Next Time

***

It was over. JR was so pleased he could barely contain himself. Parmelee had been exposed for the fraud he was and everything around Southfork and Ewing Oil would go back to normal.

He looked around the dwindling crowd for his wife, but didn't see her anywhere. Come to think of it, he hadn't seen her since right after the family had discussed what Bobby had discovered in South America.

"Now where in the world has that woman gotten off to?"

***

Sue Ellen knew she should be elated - and she was very happy for Miss Ellie and Clayton and the rest of the family.

But JR…

Well, the crisis was over, and Sue Ellen knew all too well what that meant. He wouldn't need her anymore. And that meant all the sweetness and kindness would cease and JR would go right back to his lying and scheming…

And yes. His cheating too.

Sue Ellen had seen April Stevens at the BBQ, prancing around in that tight little leather dress. She looked like a streetwalker!

But her tackiness hadn't seemed to bother JR at all. In fact, he seemed to be attracted to tacky, trashy women.

She shook her head and decided she couldn't let herself care. If anything, she should just be grateful that things with JR would be returning to normal before she was stupid enough to get her heart broken by him again.

***

JR was staring at his wife. She looked uncomfortable and stiff as she bade the last of their guests farewell. What was wrong with her? She should be as happy as he was to have Wes Parmelee out of their lives!

He watched her wave goodbye at Punk and Mavis and then turn to walk into the house.

"Hold up, Miss Texas!" He called out. "I'll walk you in."

"There's no need, JR," she said stiffly, "I know the way."

"Sue Ellen...honey, has something upset you?"

"Now what could have possibly upset me, JR? All is right with the Ewing world again. I couldn't be happier."

"You don't look very happy."

"I'm fine, JR. Goodnight."

JR started to follow her, but thought better of it. He couldn't think of a single thing he'd done to upset her. He'd been so well behaved… considerate and attentive. This should be one of the happiest days they'd had together in a long time. So why was she acting so….

"Cold," he muttered under his breath. "Back to a block of ice."

***

"I hope Clayton is alright," Sue Ellen said worriedly.

"He'll be fine, honey. Don't you worry. Maybe you and I should go ahead and eat. I'm starving."

"I'm a little surprised you came home for dinner," she told him. "I thought you'd be out celebrating the demise of Wes Parmelee and the return of Ewing Oil to your tight control."

"Sue Ellen, I've been coming home to have dinner with you and the family every night for a while now."

"Yes. But forgive me for not believing it will last."

"Why wouldn't it?" He asked. "You and I have been getting along so well lately. Did it ever occur to you that any celebrating I want to do, I want to do with you?"

"Oh really?" Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. "Tell me, my love, how did you know that Jack gave his percentage of Ewing Oil to Jamie? Did you happen to hear it from Jack's sweet little ex-wife?"

"Now hold on, Sue Ellen…"

"You know what, JR?" She said, standing up. "Maybe you should go on and eat. I'm going upstairs. I've lost my appetite!"

JR stood stone still and shocked as she brushed by him and went up the stairs. What the hell was wrong with her? He wasn't cheating! And even if he had been, how could she possibly be mad about it? They had AGREED he would seek his pleasure elsewhere!

He knocked down the rest of his drink, slammed his glass on the bar, and headed towards his car.

If she was going to judge him guilty, he may as well have the fun of doing the crime.

***

"I will NOT cry," Sue Ellen seethed.

She'd seen him get into his car and leave through her window. A small part of her had wanted him to come after her, but instead he'd driven away and confirmed her suspicions.

"Same old JR. A zebra can't change his stripes."

***

JR was worried. BD Calhoun was alive and he was very pissed off.

JR had been warned about getting involved with the mercenary, but he's done it anyway… and now…

"No, every man has a price. I just have to figure out what Calhoun's is."

He wished he could go home and talk this over with Sue Ellen, but she hadn't been very receptive to his attention the past few days. He wasn't in the mood to fight with her.

He decided to have dinner in town. His wife seemed to want space. And he was going to give it to her. Maybe in a day or so, she'd come around and they could get back to a peaceful coexistence.

***

Episode 15: So Shall Ye Reap

JR threw his napkin on his plate and growled. It was hard for him to sit here and listen to the family prattle on about nonsense when a maniac was out there, possibly gunning for him. "Excuse me," he said, standing up.

He walked into the living room and made himself a drink. He had to figure out a way to handle this situation regarding Calhoun; and the sooner the better.

***

"Sue Ellen, can I ask you something?"

"Of course, Pam," she smiled at her sister-in-law. "What is it?"

"I've been thinking about our conversation in the exercise room. I know you think I'm crazy...but, well didn't you feel insecure about JR and John Ross when you found out about Kristen being pregnant?"

"I was too stupid and self centered back then to think about John Ross. I was more scared that JR would reject me."

"Oh…"

"Pam, I'm not like that anymore."

"I know that, Sue Ellen," Pam assured her.

"I have often worried JR would...well that one of his mistresses might… you know."

"That he might have another child?"

"Yes," Sue Ellen confessed sadly. "But one thing I know for sure about JR Ewing is that he loves his son with all his heart. That would never change - not even if there was another child. And Pam, it's the same for Bobby and Christopher."

"You think so?"

"I know so," Sue Ellen reached out to take her hand. "Trust me. You're obsessing about nothing."

"Maybe you're right, Sue Ellen. I hope you are anyway."

Sue Ellen turned her gaze back to the pool where the boys were playing. "I'm so glad you and Christopher are back at Southfork."

"Me too, Sue Ellen. But you did fib to me you know."

"About what?"

"Before I moved back, you said JR was never around. He's here all the time!"

Sue Ellen turned her head so that Pam wouldn't see the tears welling up in her eyes. "Oh, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. I have a feeling that won't last much longer. After all, JR never stays a homebody for very long.

***

Episode 16: Tick Tock

"There," JR stood back to admire his handiwork, "all done."

Christopher and John Ross had been fighting in the pool and John Ross had ended up with a bloody nose. JR had taken the boy to the bathroom to get him cleaned up.

"Thank, Dad. It didn't hurt. If Uncle Bobby hadn't stopped me I would have gave Christopher his own bloody nose!"

"I know you would have, son."

"John Ross?" Sue Ellen stuck her head into the bathroom. "You go on and get cleaned up for dinner, okay?"

"Okay, Mama!"

JR followed Sue Ellen out of the bathroom and into the hallway. "That Barnes woman is acting like a total loon."

"Pam is a Ewing now," Sue Ellen reminded him. "And she is going through a very difficult time. I'm actually very worried about her."

"Oh?"

"She's so overprotective of Christopher. She's spoiling him rotten and refuses to let him out of her sight. When we were out shopping, she bought out half the toys in Dallas. She's worried that Bobby will love Jenna's baby more than Christopher."

"That woman has always had a few screws loose."

"JR! Please!"

"What? Am I supposed to feel sorry for her? She's the one who decided to marry Bobby again knowing Jenna had a bun in the oven. Some of us have real problems, Sue Ellen!"

"I thought all your problems were solved when Parmelee left Dallas."

JR took a deep breath. He wanted to confide in her about Calhoun, but this wasn't the time. She'd been a little icy for the past several days, but this afternoon she'd been a little more like her old self. She'd sat next to him out by the pool and even teased him a little. "Well, Miss Texas, you know us wrong end of the horses," he laughed, repeating her last insult, "we always are stirring something up."

Sue Ellen burst out laughing and shook her head. "I need to go dress for dinner."

"See you downstairs," he smiled at her.

He smiled faintly as he watched her walk down the hall and disappear into her bedroom. Maybe she was over whatever had been bothering her and things could get back to normal between them.

His smile turned to a frown when it crossed his mind that "normal" still meant separate bedrooms and separate lives.

***

"JR, I wish you hadn't told John Ross that you don't ever want to catch him on the losing side! You're going to give him a complex!"

JR's eyebrows shot up in surprise. He'd knocked on her bedroom door to say goodnight only to find her seething with anger. "A complex?"

"Yes! I don't want him growing up thinking he has to do whatever is necessary in order to make his father proud of him! I don't want him lying and cheating and hurting everyone around him just to win!"

"You mean don't want him to be like me," JR said, his voice low and wounded.

"JR, you're a wonderful father. But you are...morally challenged in every other area of your life."

"Morally challenged?" JR repeated. "Well, Sue Ellen, maybe so. But at least I'm not a hypocrite."

"What?"

"You want to stand over there and pretend you have a superior character, fine. But don't expect me to buy it. You fell in love with me because I'm a winner. You married me because I'm a winner. You STAY married to me because I'm a winner. You can act like you're outraged by my schemes, but you sure do love reaping the benefits of them, don't you?"

"I don't deny there was a time that was true, JR. But it's not anymore and hasn't been for a very long time."

"Really?" He challenged her, walking to stand so close in front of her that their bodies almost touched. "Then tell me Miss Texas, if it's not my success that keeps you married to me, what is it? Why the elaborate plans to get rid of Mandy and keep me in line?"

"JR…"

"Tell me, Sue Ellen. If you don't care about the money and prestige of being Mrs. JR Ewing, why fight so hard to hang on to me?"

"For John Ross," she stood up straight and squared her shoulders. "And for the family. This is my home. You don't get to decide when I leave and you don't get to move another woman into my place!"

"I see," he said thoughtfully. "So you stay with me because you love our son and our family. But not me. Interesting."

"I didn't say that, JR."

"Then you do love me?"

Sue Ellen studied his eyes carefully, but she couldn't read his expression. Yes. She loved him. She had accepted long ago that no matter what awful thing he did to her she would probably never stop loving him. But she didn't trust him. And she didn't want him to know how much power he still had over her. "Tell me, JR," her voice shook slightly, "have filled Mandy's place in your bed with another whore yet?"

JR's eyes widened slightly for an instant, then narrowed to dangerous slits. "I don't want a whore in my bed, Sue Ellen. I want my wife. But I can't have her, can I? You've made it crystal clear you won't sleep with me. So why do you care who is taking care of me sexually as long as I leave you alone and keep to our agreement to be discreet?"

"I don't care, JR," she lied. "I guess I was just curious."

JR didn't reply. He considered ending this charade once and for all by picking her up and carrying her to bed. He knew he could. He could see her uncertainty in her eyes. JR knew her too well not to know what her refusal to deny she still loved him meant.

But if he did that…

She was sober. And happy. And successful.

He loved her, but he could never promise any reconciliation would be forever. They were toxic to one another. Yes, there was still love between them, but there was also years of hurt, distrust, and anger. And if he couldn't be honest and faithful, if he broke her heart again, he was afraid of what it would do to her - what she would do to herself.

He backed away from her and moved to the door.

"I'll be more careful how I speak to John Ross," he told her. "And I'll come home most nights. I'll be the perfect husband in public. But you don't get to ask me questions about who is sharing my bed when you refuse to."

Sue Ellen said nothing as she watched him walk from the room. A single tear slid from her eye and down her cheek as she realized that her marriage was and always would be a sham.

She loved him. But she could never trust him ever again.

Oh that was beautiful!!!! Again, every detail, even the conversation at the table about the end of the horse, beautifully included.

I am so excited that BD Calhoun is appearing, as it's one of my favourite storylines. I was going to ask you if you would consider putting it in. YAY!

I'm just sad Sue Ellen doesn't feel she can open up to him yet.

So here it is, episode by episode, what I think was REALLY going on in JR and Sue Ellen's heads and hearts during season ten of "Dallas."

When I asked for new fic ideas, Sarah suggested writing around the events of season ten from JR's perspective.

Episode Seventeen: Night Visitor

JR was shaking. He wasn't a man who felt fear easily. But right now he was terrified.

Calhoun had been in the house. He obviously had the opportunity to kill JR and the whole family if he wanted, but he'd left everyone untouched. Instead he placed a fake bomb on JR's bedside and left without laying a finger on anyone.

He was playing mind games with JR. And there was now no doubt that he couldn't be bought off.

"What am I going to do?" JR muttered to himself. He had to figure out something - and fast.

***

Sue Ellen put her magazine aside and sighed heavily.

Something was bothering JR.

All the talk about security this morning at breakfast was unnerving. She knew JR. If he was that worried about safety there was a reason behind it.

She'd teased him this morning about coming into her room last night. The truth was that she'd been disappointed when he'd left, telling her to go back to sleep.

He hadn't mentioned resuming their sexual relationship again lately. He was still home nights more often than not, but he was late a lot. She doubted business was what was keeping him away.

She had to face facts; her husband had taken another lover.

And she couldn't really blame him. JR was a man with an enormous sexual appetite. He'd given her the opportunity to satisfy him and she'd refused so he had simply found what he needed elsewhere.

The shrill ringing of the phone interrupted her thoughts. She reached over and picked it up. "Hello?"

"Sue Ellen," JR's angry voice came across the line. ""Why didn't you tell me you lost your damn keys?"

"What?"

"Your keys!" He barked again. "Bobby just told me he had to come pick you and Pam up from shopping because you lost your damn keys!"

"Oh yes. I'm sorry, JR. It just slipped my mind."

"Slipped your mind?" He repeated incredulously. "I told you I was worried about security! Now some maniac could be running around with keys to our house!"

"JR, don't you think you're overreacting just a bit?'

"Sue Ellen, your irresponsible behavior has put our whole family at risk! I know you're not used to thinking about anything but spending my money, but try to consider everyone else for a change!"

Sue Ellen gasped in shock and anger. "Fine. Goodbye, JR!"

She slammed down the phone and growled to herself. What the hell was wrong with that man? What an ass! And here she'd been thinking about maybe…

"Forget it, Sue Ellen," she said to herself. "He's not worth even thinking about."

***

Sue Ellen had to get out of there. She couldn't stand to look at one more picture, one more girl.

None of them were right.

Because none of them were Mandy.

Valentine's sales had been declining ever since Mandy had left the company. Sue Ellen has mistakenly thought that it would be easy to find another Valentine girl.

But she'd been dead wrong.

Suddenly, she found herself doubting her own decisions. Maybe she SHOULD have sold the company when she'd had the opportunity. Maybe she should have never let Mandy go in the first place. Maybe she should have listened to Valentine.

But she hadn't. She'd been so sure her way was the best way.

She wished she could talk to JR about it. He would know exactly what to do to get her business headed in the right direction.

But she couldn't talk to him, could she? Not when she would be devastated if he told her to bring Mandy back.

She shook her head and decided to stop obsessing over her company for a while. What she needed was a distraction.

Some retail therapy was in order. She hadn't been shopping for herself for a while. Maybe what she needed was just a day to focus on herself. She'd spend some money, go to the salon, and maybe stop somewhere for a nice cup of coffee and a muffin or something.

She'd worry about her problems later.

"There," Pam said, pulling the covers over Sue Ellen's body. "Need anything else?"

"No," Sue Ellen turned her head away.

"The sedative should take care of the headache and help you sleep. I'll come check on you later."

"I'm not drinking again, Pam."

"I want to believe you, Sue Ellen."

"But you can't, can you? Because I've lied about it so many times before."

"Sue Ellen, I just can't understand WHY you would start drinking again. You've been so happy! You have your business and you and John Ross are so close. Even you and JR seem to be getting along better."

"That's right, Pam! There's no reason for me to drink and I swear I haven't been!"

"Then what happened?"

"I don't know," Sue Ellen couldn't stop the tears from flowing from her eyes, "but I can't shake the feeling…"

"What feeling?"

"That something awful happened to me last night!"

"Sue Ellen…"

"Please Pam, PLEASE! You have to believe me!"

"I...you know what, Sue Ellen? I do. I do believe you."

"Thank you," Sue Ellen sobbed with relief. "I wish.."

"What?"

"I wish JR would believe me. But he won't, Pam. Not ever. He finally respected me and now he is going to think I'm a weak fool again!"

"Oh, Sue Ellen!" Pam sat down on the edge of the bed and gave her sister-in-law a tight hug. "If he believes that, then he is the fool. Not you!"

Sue Ellen didn't answer. She couldn't. All she could do was sob.

***

JR felt sick.

She was drinking again.

And it was all his fault.

He's been so horrible to her on the phone yesterday, accusing her of not caring about anyone but herself.

Guilt was gnawing his insides apart. Sue Ellen didn't know about Calhoun, but he'd still lashed out at her for being careless.

And then…

He hadn't gone home last night.

He and April had been sleeping together for a while, but last night was the first time he'd spent the whole night with her.

Maybe if he'd gone home, Sue Ellen wouldn't have left the house and gone on a bender.

Maybe…

He sighed heavily when the elevator door slid open. He stepped inside and shook his head.

Whatever Sue Ellen had done last night had been his fault and his alone.

He'd been so careful with her. But in the end he'd slipped right back into his old ways.

"I've destroyed her again."

***

JR slammed on the brakes and cursed.

He was so mad, so scared...and so hurt.

Sue Ellen was having an affair.

With BD Calhoun.

He was furious. Calhoun had obviously seduced his wife to get back at him. And he wanted JR to know it. Calhoun had sent those pictures for two reasons; to taunt JR with the fact he'd spent the night having sex with his wife and to…

"To let me know he can get to her and hurt her anytime he wants to," he muttered to himself.

The traffic light turned green and JR gunned the gas.

He needed to get home and confront Sue Ellen. He intended to put the fear of God in her. He couldn't tell her who her lover really was, but he damned sure would let her know he had pictures and if she didn't break things off immediately he'd use them to divorce her and take custody of his son.

And he would never let her know how much this hurt him. He'd had no idea there was another man in her life, but it explained why she had so suddenly turned cold toward him again.

He had hoped…

He shook the thought away. Whatever slim hope he'd had for a real marriage with Sue Ellen had been totally and utterly destroyed.

***

JR leaned against Sue Ellen's closed door and closed his eyes.

This was agony.

He hadn't thought he could ever feel worse than he had when he'd seen those pictures of Sue Ellen and Calhoun, but he'd been wrong.

She wasn't drinking.

And she wasn't cheating.

Calhoun had drugged and kidnapped her. "This is all my fault," he muttered to himself.

"Well, I'm glad you recognize that fact!"

JR's eyes snapped open and he came face to face with his furious mother. "Now, listen Mama…"

"No! YOU listen JR! I don't know what you did to her, but I know the only reason Sue Ellen ever drinks is because of you!"

"She isn't drinking," JR informed her. "And what happens in my marriage is my business."

"No, JR. So long as you live under my roof, it's my business too! I have watched you hurt Sue Ellen over and over. I've stayed out of it long enough. I will NOT stand by and watch you destroy her again!"

"I won't," he said softly. "Mama...I can't… I can't talk about what's really going on, but she isn't drinking. And I won't do anything to hurt her. I promise."

"Your promises don't mean a damn thing to me. Or to her."

"No. I guess they don't."

"Clayton and I are going away for a few days. I need to get away from this place - away from you. Use the time to to straighten out whatever is going on between you and your wife. Understand me clearly, JR; if things are bad between the two of you when we get back, it won't be Sue Ellen who leaves Southfork after the divorce."

"There isn't going to be a divorce. I told you. She isn't drinking and I will be good to her."

"I hope so," she whispered, her voice steady with conviction. "For your sake, I really hope so."

***

Sue Ellen stepped out of the shower and tried to get her fear under control.

She's sent Pam away earlier. She couldn't talk to her - she didn't want her to know the truth.

She wiped the steam off her mirror with a towel and stared at her reflection. "Did he rape me?" she asked herself for the hundredth time.

JR had believed her at least. He was still angry with her though. His last words to her had been that she should be more careful.

And maybe he was right. He'd told her repeatedly lately that he was worried about their safety. She hadn't taken it seriously at all. She didn't even remember to tell him she'd lost her keys. And now..

And now her carelessness had led to her being drugged and kidnapped and…

And God knows what else.

"Whatever he did, I guess I deserved it.*

***

JR glanced at his watch and sighed. The hours were dragging by.

Calhoun wouldn't be returning to his hotel room until tomorrow, so all he could do now is watch and wait.

And he was watching - he hadn't let Sue Ellen out of his sight all evening.

He still hadn't told her the whole truth about Calhoun. But he'd told her he knew the man and that what had happened hadn't been her fault.

She was so scared. The look on her face when she'd told him she was afraid Calhoun had raped her had broken his heart.

He tried to reassure her. He'd promised her he'd never let Calhoun hurt her again. He hoped he'd managed to give her some comfort.

He had wanted so badly to take her into his arms and hold her until she wasn't scared anymore. But he couldn't. He didn't have that right. Not after he'd been so quick to think the worst of her only to discover he was at fault for the horror she'd endured.

He would protect her and the boys with his life. But he wouldn't force his company on her. God knows she was better off if he just left her alone.

***

"Sue Ellen, I just feel like there's something you're not telling me."

"There is, Pam. But…"

"What?"

"I'm just not up to going into all the gory details, okay?"

"JR…"

"JR what?"

"He was watching you tonight. He seemed very protective."

"Really?"

"Something bad did happen to you, didn't it? And JR knows, doesn't he?"

Sue Ellen took a deep breath. She may as well tell her. She was pretty sure JR had told Bobby and Bobby would tell her anyway. "Pam, we think a man drugged me and…"

"Oh, Sue Ellen, no!"

"It's alright. JR feels very strongly that he didn't rape me, but.."

"Does JR know who did it?"

"Yes."

"Well. Then I'm sure he'll take care of it. JR is a snake, but he won't tolerate someone hurting you or his family."

Sue Ellen started to reply, but she was interrupted by a knock on her door.

"Come in," she called.

"I'm sorry to bother you, Sue Ellen…" whatever else JR had been going to say was lost when he saw Pam sitting on the edge of his wife's bed. "Oh. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt."

"That's okay, JR," Pam stood up. "I was just leaving." She turned back to face her friend before walking from the room. "You come get me if you need anything. Anything at all."

"Thank you, Pam," Sue Ellen nodded.

"How much did you tell her?" JR asked when Pam was out of the room.

"Enough," Sue Ellen said softly. "How much did you tell Bobby?"

"Enough," he repeated her answer back to her. He pointed towards the spot where Pam had been sitting on the bed. "May I?"

"Of course," Sue Ellen smiled.

He sat down and paused long enough to collect his thoughts. "I want you to know you're safe here. The alarm has been updated and all the locks have been changed. And I'll be right across the hall. If you get scared, just...well just call for me."

"I'm not scared anymore, JR. I know you'll protect me."

"I will, Sue Ellen. I promise."

"I know, JR."

"I'm sorry I wasn't here to protect you last night. It won't happen again."

Sue Ellen almost asked him exactly what wouldn't happen again. Was he saying he wouldn't continue his affair or just that he wouldn't spend the night with his mistress? But she decided she didn't want to get into that tonight."If you had been here last night it wouldn't have mattered. He got to me yesterday afternoon."

"Yes. But when you didn't come home, I would have found you."

"No you wouldn't have, JR. You'd have assumed I was out drinking just like everyone else did."

"Maybe," his voice choked with emotion, he reached out and lovingly caressed her cheek *but I'll never think that way about you again. Not ever."

"JR…"

"Get some rest, honey," he said softly standing up. "If you need anything, I hope you know you don't need to call for Pam. Not when I'm right across the hall."

"Will you…"

"Will I what?"

"Nothing," she dropped her gaze to the bedspread. "Nevermind."

He studied her carefully. She was still shaken up, no matter how much she denied it. "Do you want me to… I mean would you allow me to stay here with you until you fall asleep?"

Sue Ellen jerked her eyes up to meet his. How did he know that's what she was going to ask him? How did he know how badly she needed him to stay? "Yes, JR. Please stay with me."

"Alright honey."

He settled himself beside her on the bed. He wanted to hold her, but he knew he had no right to ask her for that. Instead he reached over and took her hand in his and brought it up to rest on his chest. "Go to sleep, honey."

Sue Ellen nodded and snuggled under the covers. Suddenly she felt so safe. In spite of everything that had happened to her, JR made her feel protected. She wouldn't think about what that meant tonight. Tonight she would just rest easy knowing it was so.

And I'm choking up over here.

Love a protective JR, but I hate that we mostly only see him AFTER Sue Ellen has been hurt (but at least with the BD storyline he's not directly the one who did it).

I might have more thoughts later......... or I might wait for @Sarah to express them for me lol.

@Sarah , Not bad, of all the tramps though April is reasonably low on the iron list.
She should never have gone near our boy, but she was perfectly fine for baby brother.
I like April. Of all of JR's mistresses, she was the one who never had evil intent toward Sue Ellen. She didn't care about breaking up the marriage. And she accepted it just fine when he told her to buzz of because he was back with his wife.

Oh I like April too, but I do sometimes get flashbacks that she took my man when the Queen needed him. This is enough to put her on the list.

She said herself though “JR you and I were hardly lovers”.

Still, she’s a 2 on the Tramp Reader and there she shall stay.
