I'm not going to make any assertions on Larry Hagman, he's dead and cannot defend himself, I personally wouldn't read the book, I did read and excerpt in the newspaper and honestly don't believe Hagman a 100% bad person that its made out to be, however he did dislike Timothy Patrick Murphy and Dack Rambo because of their bisexuality, which is documented but again the 1980s were a very ignorant time, and Hagman was a man of his time can't he be forgiven for that? It's not nice, I agree, but we make mistakes

We should be talking and discussing about a show we all love, whether its praise or criticism :D

Are you suggesting Hagman was somehow culpable in his mother's lesbianism?

I just feel like it isn't any of my business.

No, I just find it odd that LH hated gays when his mother was the sapphic queen! Big bull Dyke momma! He allegedly was all Buddhist, yet beat the family dog regularly, was the greadiest human ever to be even planet, simply shrugged off his daughter getting raped, was an utter drug addiction of Herculean proportions, etc. Ironic that all of those that worship him and the show don't get that he was the downfall of it!

VP did say on Dallas Fanzine interview that she was "not a happy camper" during the dream season .... The sad thing is that with Bobby gone it lost the Barnes v Ewing concept, as this is what Dallas was all about, same when VP went, it lost the concept too! Pat D tried to make it outside of Dallas, but unforunately, did not make it big, so he came back - VP left and made her multi million pound beauty empire work, she focused on that not acting!

I think what VP is saying is that DALLAS to her WAS the Barnes/Ewing feud and although that continued after season 5 when Pam & Bobby split, new partners brought in etc, it was never the same and the writers concentrated on twists and turns rather than dramatic script - that's how to reads to me anyway.

Are you saying that an actor can experience a soap-divorce as something "real"?
I've never given that much thought (who's-working-with-who) but it's a fascinating angle.

I actually thought VP gave a better performance when Pam was hanging out with Mark, Cliff and Afton than when she was living at Southfork. She seemed more relaxed somehow, more spontaneous.

I agree, I rather enjoyed the Pam gang era, it seemed that for the first time the Barnes family had more people on their side! I always felt there weren't enough Barnes's in the series, perhaps Jimmy Monahan and his mother; Maggie should've been around more

I think it was painfully obvious to everyone that the dream destroyed the show. Serials in general have to fight to be taken seriously and this killed the show (and the nighttime serial genre).

That's it in a nutshell. And DALLAS never recovered. And in attempting to wipe away that season by using a poorly conceived dream scenario, it actually had the effect of preserving it in amber forever.

Personally I don't have an issue with DALLAS going on until 1991, had the storylines been of a higher calibre as they were from seasons 1-7 (DVD) or even the standards of seasons 8-10, but, with each episode post season 10, it became sillier and sillier, it was like by allowing the dream resolution to pass it gave way to Katzman, Hagman and Duffy to use DALLAS as a playground and not as the solid reputable drama it had grown into, out went good actors such as Victoria Principle, Susan Howard and Steve Kanaly (I'm surprised Ken Kercheval, BBG, Linda Gray and Howard Keel stayed as long as they did) and they were replaced by James, Cally, Michelle and April,
Cally was only cast because Larry Hagman liked her not because she had any talent.
Yes, DALLAS could have run ten more years if they hadn't lost any sense of how to do it. Patrick Duffy said a couple of years ago that "we lost objectivity" about what qualifies as a good story during the last couple of years of oldDALLAS, and Larry has conceded that the last two season "weren't up to par."

Cally never bothered me, by the way, and I liked the actress. Sure, JR and Cally was a mismatch, but it was supposed to be -- and Sue Ellen helped trick JR into marrying her.

I don't think people understand what a monster LH was. Whether or not his daughter has a life or not, at best, he was a miserable human being. Even if a fraction of what his daughter wrote is true (and I DID read the book), be f#cking gone, LH!

I´ll never understand how a board for fans of a TV show has ended up as the place to demonize the person who made it what it is. And all thanks to the memoirs written by an ungrateful daughter with no life, that everybody seems to believe as the Truth.

Larry Hagman is and will always be the soul of "Dallas". Make another board for "Dallas" haters, all I read around here lately is hateful things about everything. If that´s the only opinions some people here have, it´s pitiful.

PS: This is not adressed to anybody specifically, it´s just the general tone that you can get here since TNT Dallas was canceled.

Some of you sound as if Mr. Hagman abused you when you were children. There are places where you can treat those 'issues" you have...you know, anger management, prepotence, hatred to spare...:re:

Well, even Larry admitted that he had more than a little of JR in himself. And, after all, not everything can be a compliment for our favorite stars.

If people want to go around claiming Larry was a saint and that Victoria was born as late as 1950, then okay. But not everybody get on board with that rose-colored stuff... I had friends who were unable to watch DALLAS, not because they didn't like the show, but because they instinctively found Larry Hagman to be "disturbing" and "crazy" (and they weren't talking about JR, but the actor himself) and I understood that, even though it didn't bother me.

Yeah, vive les beaucoup d'opinions!

BTW: I've never heard that Larry had a problem with Timothy Patrick Murphy at all. Or Tom Fucello for that matter. Just Dack Rambo, and that likely had something to do Dack's "sprayed on jeans" (or, as Our James once phrased it, "the Taj Mahal of crotches" and a turret undetectable in Dack's earlier work) and that Rambo was being positioned to be a high-profile de facto replacement for Bobby.

Well I certainly think that can be a factor in a long running show - seasons 1-5 are pretty much one ensemble cast with regular cameo stars who grew with the show as well as each other, they experienced something that was truly groundbreaking in TV and knew their characters inside out.

So after 5 years working together (and seemingly getting on very well by all accounts in interviews etc) some (like VP) only got very few scenes with the original cast and were suddenly surrounded by new actors & characters - I would imagine it's like going down a year in school or something, you still see your old friends but not as much as you used to, meanwhile you've got to get on with trying to get through it and hopefully making new friends.

I also find it interesting that most of the cold/could do no wrong etc comments about VP have come from actors who came into the show after season 5.

That he was a hypocritical perv. Let's crucify Murphy, Rambo, etc., but have a butch momma and share naked time with his teenage daughter. His daughter also stated that she firmly believes that LH had experimented with men at least once in his life.

The only good thing that I can say about him is that it was I that first broke the news of his death on the original SoapChat forum....

Now, let's all get back on topic, OK?

I have fully understood since I was a teen that Larry undoubtedly had tendencies.

But I don't think he said anything negative about Murphy or etcetera. Only Rambo. Unless you can prove otherwise. If you can I'll accept it.

TJames is just really hyperbolic as a rule. It's part of his charm. I'm not sure what the other part is.
