demise of Crossroads years ago... Manchester has Corrie... Leeds has Emmerdale,
London has Eastenders even Chester has its own soap ...

Crossroads was between Birmingham/Nottingham either side of the East/West in the Midlands, if you watched the original Crossroads and then the 2001-2003 versions.

There was "Doctors" on the BBC in Birmingham actually, although yet again that came to an end last year after 24 years on TV.

There was Empire Road too, which had my favourite ever soap theme song. To this day, whenever I do bent-over rows in the gym, I find myself singing, "Bent-over ro-o-o-ws" to the tune of "Empire Ro-o-o-ad."

Empire Road brings back great memories, a much under rated show.

I recently saw the play Alterations at the National Theatre and thought it was really good. I wanted to see it because it was written by Michael Abbensetts, who also wrote Empire Road.

I'm not sure why Empire Road ended and whether it has anything to do with audience figures. The main story arc was the son of the main black character was in a romance with an Asian woman and this caused some friction within the families due to racial differences. In the final episode everyone came together and they got married which concluded that storyline. It's possible it was only ever planned to run for 2 seasons.

the bbc struggled for years to get a successful soap together that would rival
Granada's Corrie.... eventually they hit on Eastenders and they ve never looked back
