Emmerdale Classic Emmerdale

Oh...

Though I'm finding myself bored with this family now, I can see why they didn't last long.
Off to Germany. Will doesn’t go for a while though. At least you won’t have to worry about Tony’s similarity to one of the Tom Merricks, due to them both being Edward Peel. Which only made it stranger when Ned Glover mentioned a while back to Jack that Jack didn’t know what it was like to lose a child. I remember Jackie.

Nice to see Alan Rothwell pop up again though.

Yeah that was a strange thing for Ned to say to Jack, I know Ned wasn’t around Emmerdale when the Merrick’s were around but Ned and Jack had been friends for a fair few years at this point, Jackie Merrick had to have been spoken about by Jack at some point or perhaps the fact that he and Jack share the same daughter in law who was married to both their sons!

I was actually sad when they killed her off, I felt that with better storylines she could have carried on into the 2000s era, had they not had her have the affair with Jack she could have carried on, but that storyline ruined her character
Think Glenda is a teacher now. I saw a recent picture earlier this week.

Yes me too. I remember how shocking her death was back then. Then again, I still hadn't watched Hollyoaks at that point.
Yes. Rachel fell for Graham in a big way.

Rachel was a strong, well defined female character who could and should have continued on with the show, it speaks to a short sightness that Emmerdale often displays with its long standing female characters. The tone of her exit was horrible, bearing in mind that this was still a few years before Richard Hillman, a story that sadly made violence and murder such an acceptable and everyday aspect of the soaps.

Yes I heard she became a teacher, she also visited the set years ago with her class

I agree, Emmerdale back in the 1990s was brilliant but often way short sighted, they overused characters like Kathy but repeating the same stories for characters like Rachel, which was why Glenda left in the end, she hated the Jack/Rachel storyline and said that while Rachel did go after married men twice, On those Occasions they were husbands of women she wasn’t close to , she only became close to Kathy after she gave birth to her son but before that they rarely interacted, and that it was no way Rachel would be so callous to Sarah who was not only her best friend but also step-aunt and surrogate mother, that storyline ruined not just Rachel but Jack and Sarah as a couple.

Rachel was a strong female character as well, she wasn’t a victim, she was also different from the other characters at the time because she had a life away from the village when she was at Leeds university, in many ways Sandie Merrick was probably the forerunner to Rachel, if you swap Sandie being a career woman with Rachel going off to university.
Kathy was massively overused by the late 1990s, Rachel I could see being the cool older cousin to Robert, Andy & Victoria, offering advice and being a surrogate mum to Victoria, being Jack’s ally and eventually running her own business, I loved her friendship with Zoe in the 1990s.

Yes it’s hard to believe that the Graham Clarke story was just a few years before Richard Hillman, but I agree her exit was horrific at the time.

In some ways I see Katie as being a combination of Kathy and Rachel.

Every time he is on the screen I've been questioning myself. I looked him up and saw that he was in BAD GIRLS which I remember well, but there was something else niggling at me and I completely forgot about his roll in HO. Damn, I should have looked further into his work, I just assumed it was only BASD GIRLS. Now I feel dumb!

Yes. Paul Opacic was in Bad Girls. He reports that people have told him that he looks like someone called David Duchovny. Something vaguely familiar about the person with him though...

I don’t know the age of Tricia when she arrived in the village, but Terry trying to get her into bed is pure cringe.

Peter Kay popped up in 90s Corrie yesterday and the other day this thug turned up in the village.

I'm loving the Kim/Steve trail, very gripping, well, apart from that outburst from Kathy while in the witness box.

Yes it was great stuff, nearing the end of Kim’s first time on the show, I’m sure we’ll get to her 2018 episodes by around 2034 :-D
Kim’s departure was better than brilliant. Not only do we get a great feeling that she is free and somewhat loaded, we get some amazing scenes of the village by air. I also love the reaction from the villagers at an helicopter flying low above them.

Corrie was so much weaker with its exits from Hilda, to Bet, to Reg, to Mavis, to Maureen and Raquel.
