Odd, I don't remember giving myself an avatar - you go away for a few months, the forum dissapears and you end up with an avatar :D

Anyway has anyone been watching these Corrie clip shows. Generally seem to skip a lot - to be expected with 22 minute shows trying to cover 60 years - the only way they can really give a good run down is probably an hour long show (or just release the entire episode vaults on Britbox as I keep badgering them to do....) Either way they're an entertaining replacement for 6 episodes a week.

I see the older task are heading back in the autumn, good to hear. Very weird with the elderly and vulnerable missing.

And oh boy has the fella who plays Craig lost some weight. Good on him.

I've been watching the clip shows but they do seem very rushed.

CS has been very good the last few months and has only slipped back into the unfunny Corrie in the last couple of weeks. Ditch Sean and Mary and concentrate on the strong actors. Corrie is better at the drama right now, leave the comedy alone, "it ain't funny."

I guess they sometimes have to throw them a storyline. Hope Sean leaves at some point but no hope being held at present.

Anyway - the Corrie Icons clip show about Sally is by far the best of the clip shows so far, with contributions from the main characters she's interacted (and mentions of the obvious one who couldn't contribute) - managed to carefully tread the 34 years she's been on the street and cover her major plot points (although her having basically no stories for about a third of that may have helped). It certainly seems like Sally is one of those characters that will grow old on the street, Dyvenor doesn't seem in any hurry to leave and neither does Michael le Vell - it'd be nice to see more on screen interaction with the two given how many years they spent together but I get the reasons for keeping them separate.

The Icons shows certainly seem more well-rounded shows than the clip shows. Looking forward to the Roy Cropper one next week.

Also hoping they make a few more of these leading up to the 60th anniversary - perhaps even covering departed characters.

That comment makes for a good question.

If you could choose your TOP FIVE characters/actors to be given the half-hour special which would you choose and just to open it up wider, let's go with a variety of options

Top Five characters that are still in the show

Top five characters that have departed the show

Top five characters where the actor is no longer alive

I'm going to add another one - Corrie's Iconic Couples - as there's some characters who simply can't be split from their partners.

Anyway.

Characters Still in the Show:
Peter Barlow
David Platt
Tracy Barlow
Nick Tilsey
Eileen Grimshaw

(I've excluded Rita and Gails as they recently had documentaries in this style done - that said so had Sally)

Characters Where the Actor Has Departed
Emily Bishop
Mike Baldwin
Bet Lynch
Richard Hillman
Curly Watts

Characters Where the Actor isn't Alive
Hilda Ogden
Elsie Tanner
Ena Sharples
Ivy Tilsey
Fred Elliot

Corrie Couples
Jack and Vera
Stan and Hilda
Ken and Dierdre
Roy and Hayley
David and Kylie

This was way harder than I thought it would be and I've definitely missed people who should be included.

To my knowledge the actor, John Savident who played Fred is still alive.

Are you confusing him with Fred Gee played by the late Fred Feast?

Oh damn. I thought Savident was dead. Maybe Alf Ramsay Roberts in place of him then, but then I'd want to move Elliot to departed character's.... suppose you could put him in for Curly.

Can't believe I forgot Blanche now I'm trying to work out who I'd take out to replace with her.

Sod it why don't they just do one of these for every major character!

Do people think the street than survive when William Roache does decide to leave (or the man in the sky/fete decide for him - more realistically as he seems determined to stay forever)?

The central tenet of Coronation Street is the thread as a long term story is that of Ken Barlow's life as the young student with ideals who wants to leave the place he grew up in behind ending up stuck in the very same street for the rest of his life - what will be 60 years in December. The street without Ken seems almost unthinkable even in this late stage of his life, I know he's sort of left already being in the old people's home but the family around him survive - to be honest I've lost tracked where he's actually living with Ken being temporarily out of play due to the Covid restrictions on set.

It seems like such a momentous occasion as the death or departure of the last original character remaining in the show - and the only constant character in the show could well be one of the biggest hurdles for the long term future of the show. If it's treat with too much casuality many long term viewers could be angered, if it's turned into some sort of farce many long term viewers could be angry. I do wonder how many people who began watching as children or young adults back when Ken first burst onto our screens still watch the show regularly - and further how many have watched it religiously all that time. Anyone in that group may never quite accept a street without Ken, yes the street has lost iconic characters before but how many of them are truly almost fixtures of the street as much as the Rovers? Emily may have been a similarly well ingrained character - but let's be honest she had had very few very major storylines over the last decade or so of her life.

Ken is a different beast - character's have been brought in purely to aid in the creation of the Ken Barlow family legacy - some of them very good characters who will likely live on forever to clearly remind us of him. Do people think that when the truly identifiable storyline of Ken for many finally draws to a close, the street will survive beyond him, or could it quickly become the beginning of the end? I'd imagine the farewell would draw in a large number of viewers, but long term what becomes the long term human touch to the show. There's no character with quite the same arc, the arc mirrored throughout real life, among generations of characters to come after him and remain in the show.

I'm sure replies will be along the lines of the show surviving other major characters will be along, but I honestly see Ken as far more than a major character, he's part of the street fabric - I've certainly noticed his recent absence from the show and not in a good way - he's the last big link to Tony Warren's street and the street could be fatally wounded by losing that.

Apologies for the rambling nature of this post....
