You're very informative @cobbles :bravo:

Thanks, glad some appreciates the ramblings anyway :)

Time for me to ask for help though. Was it ever confirmed that a character would die this week? And are they counting Oliver if so? Vague recollections of a death spoiler somewhere that I can find no evidence of :D

And it's great to see Rita back, although not sure how she's going to get enough to drink with the rovers being shut ;)

I bought a tv guide (don't know why I do because there's never anything on and I rarely read it) but on the front last week it did say someone would die and had a photo of Yasmeen and Geoff and I THINK someone else behind them......(hopefully Leanne)

Here's a nice story:

Forget dating apps or school sweethearts, 18-year-old Cat Davies met her girlfriend through their shared love of Coronation Street.

"Instead of loving a rock band or a Netflix series, I've always loved Corrie," she tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

The show celebrates its 60th anniversary today. The first episode aired on 9 December 1960, which makes it the longest-running soap in the world.

Cat's love for Corrie doesn't end with the closing credits. She runs a fan page for Carla, a character in the programme.

"We all make video edits of our favourite characters, so we take bits of them in the programme and add music and effects," she says.

Both Cat and her girlfriend Shan made these video edits, and so found one another on Instagram.

After speaking online, they decided to meet up in 2016 when Cat was visiting Manchester from south west Wales.

Cat met most of her closest friends from the online community surrounding the soap.

Apart from juicy storylines keeping her hooked three nights a week, she says watching it religiously has made her a "more understanding person".

"It always made me judge people less. The different stories just show you that you never know what's going on behind closed doors," she says.

The storylines, although sometimes unrealistic, are important to a lot of viewers and most recently the show's producers have reflected the coronavirus pandemic, which Cat says has really helped her get through it.

"Seeing how the characters cope and seeing how they're going through the same thing and having to face the same restrictions as we do is reassuring and is also great that they're reminding their audience to keep safe."

Holly Morgan, 26, has been watching Coronation Street for more than 10 years. She agrees that the storylines are more than just something to watch with a cuppa.

"There's an emotional abuse storyline, and that's something I went through," she says.
"Having things like that in the show raises awareness about what people go through; a lot of people don't really understand emotional abuse and gaslighting.
"This storyline has got people talking. It opens people's eyes."

With more choice of big budget programmes at our fingertips, Cat says soaps still have a place in entertaining all ages of people.

She said: "There are loads of good new series but you'd be wrong to say soaps are out of date.

"Because it's never ending, you have this constant connection with the characters and stories.

"So, to some people it's just a show, but to others it can mean a great deal because of how they connect with these characters and what they've gone through."

Whether it's dramatic storylines, funny characters or a way to meet new friends, millions of people still agree with Cat that there's "nothing better than to come home and just wind down and watch Corrie".

I think Corrie should pull back to 3 episodes / week - more than enough and maybe with that the quality of the scripts could improve

they would still need to give a P45 to quite a lot of dreadful actors though and Gemma and Sean would be first in my CULL!

Looking at the old clips just highlghts the lack of gravitas in the cast now and for every Maureen Lipman and David neilson there are 10 Sean and Gemmas

It would also give them a good reason to reduce the cast, as well as attracting a higher calibre of actor (the workload is notorious and no doubt turns a lot of people who might have considered it years ago off.) Even going to 4 episodes a week Mon - Fri 7.30pm, would cut the overall cast workload by a third.

Might also finally be a way of binning of the obvious cycles of on-screen appearances that drag storylines out.

I guess we should find out whether my back of fag packet theory Dev dies is true.

There was absolutely no mention of him in the spoilers about his kids which was bizarre.

Tonight’s episode was enjoyable with Geoff’s demise. Plus, there was a better documentary on afterwards featuring the women in the street over the years :)

Ok then, who does the 'this street I've lived here all my life speech in the unfortunate event Bill Roache retires in the next 10 years?

Most of the other longest serving characters moved into the street rather than being born there.

Nick's the oldest born on the street, but he's hardly lived there all his life with all the bombing about elsewhere.

I'm glad you found something to enjoy last night.

I thought it was dreadful and I can't decide whether which part was the worst, the acting or the writing.

Alya has been fighting for months to free her grandmother and when that finally happened, she leaves her grandma on her own, knowing Geoff is watching the place. No way do I believe the character of Alya would do that. It can't get any worse one would think, but it did and even more ridiculous with Yasmeen going back into the house and believing Geoff would allow her to do that. Yasmeen has been through hell, so why would she go back into that house knowing Geoff was likely to come in? Again, absolutely ridiculous!

Now, it can't get any worse - can it?

Oh, hell yeah! The weak and frail person that Yasmeen is manages to climb on top of her house and continue to flee Geoff who is also scaling the roof tiles. That's it, it definitely can't get any worse.

Holy, crap, it got worse, Alya managed to get into the locked house, totally ignore the fact it was burning down, she sneaks onto the roof to whack Geoff!!!

If anything does manage to burn down, it has to be every piece of footage from last night's epsidoe.

Then we have a rehashing of the 'save our cobbles' 40th with a 'save our street' - I'm out of here!

Honestly feel they should have asked the cast to form a gigantic household bubble in a hotel near the set. The social distancing is getting potty now.

We've been saying this over and over and over for the last 15 years on here and all that happens is we get more episodes. I don't know anyone who would argue that point.

Looking at the old clips just highlghts the lack of gravitas in the cast now
I disagree. Looking at old clips then fine, but I've watched all the ITV3 repeats since 1986 and we are now in 1998. While there were some amazingly brilliant characters, the show still had wooden characters and stupid storylines.

I think it's easy to say the show is rubbish now compared to how it was back then, but when you watch both decades side by side you can find many, many similarities.

Watch last night's 60th and you will eat your words, both Lipman and Neilson were poor as well as Knox, Roach and Nichols.

It can be executed so much better. I watched Emmerdale all last week and this week and somehow they are managing to manipulate the scenes/angles into believing they are not distancing every character.

It was the stuff on the roof that had me in stitches, supposedly they self-isolated for that. God knows why when they were still 2m away from each other.

There's a brilliant show inside this one somewhere that everybody appears to be failing to find. The suggestions to find it have been made over and over again and never seem to be heeded. I suppose the only saving grace of the abysmal ratings recently is it might finally make them realise 6 episodes is killing the audience for it and get them to scale down again.

Absolutely!

And while we all champion the classic characters of gone by, the show has some wonderful characters right now and still manages to capture the heart of the nation with young characters such as Emma, Nina, Asha and Amy. It's early doors for the new Sam and new face behind Summer, but so far so good.

They need to stop trying to replace Jack and Vera with Tyrone & Fiz and probably look closer at Tracey constantly henpecking Steve.

Shona was a corrie classic in the making, but sadly this brain damage storyline isn't doing her any favours.

I really enjoyed last nights episode and found Geoff very sinister. I’m assuming he’s now dead after falling off the roof in a chicken revenge type karma.

The only bit I thought was ridiculous was when Alya suddenly recovered and appeared on the roof of a house that was already on fire.
