I've noticed that too. I can understand the Oil Barons Club, because everybody hung out there. But they'd run into each at random restaurants across the city. One example was when Jock was having lunch with Julie Gray and Bobby and Pam just happen to show up.
Or when JR was having lunch in some random restaurant and Sue Ellen just happens to be having a business lunch at the exact same restaurant and the exact same time?

Are they really random, though? It's not beyond belief that they share a handful of favourite eateries.

I wonder if they made any attempt to keep Lois Chiles, and if not, why? I mean.. was Jenilee Harrison an upgrade? Sheree Wilson? The Lisa Alden actress?
Jenilee Harrison was surprisingly good IMHO. The story line wasn't bad, but could have been more interesting if Jason Ewing was alive or if Jamie was an imposter (didn't Jenna say that Lucas and Jason didn't like each other, contrary to Jamie's story)

Sheree Wilson was good as April until she coupled with Bobby, a character who played both sided against the middle and formed a surprising friendship with Cliff

Lisa Alden's character just did not work.

These characters had different narrative functions than Holly, so I think it is a little bit apples and oranges.

Still, you make a good point that Holly could have had more story

yep, for sure those weren’t remotely Holly replacements character-wise, was just kind of wondering out loud why they didn’t slot Chiles into a regular role on the show. Not that the others were bad, I just thought Lois/Holly could have been an excellent “younger attractive woman with significant storylines” for years… maybe even the one who got Bobby to break his “not if she’s been with JR” rule.

Now that I think of it.. what about Lois not as Holly Harwood but as, instead of Priscilla, the third Jenna Wade?

Had she not been Holly, yes, that could have been interesting.

On the note about actresses that could have played other roles on Dallas,

Morgan Fairchild would have been great as Leslie Stewart. Granted, I would have preferred almost anyone else in that role.

Susan Flannery is a good actress, but just not the most interesting one for that role.

Joanna Cassidy ,Veronica Hamel and Tina Louise all played other roles on Dallas - I think any of them would have been would have been better for that role.

I may be getting a little off-topic, but while on it, some other choices:

Dixie Carter, Shelley Fabares, Gretchen Corbett, Angie Dickinson, Mariette Hartley, Kate Jackson, Stephanie Powers...the list goes on.

I don't think the writers thought that far ahead. When they killed off Digger they didn't know they were going to have marriage drama between Jock and Ellie is my guess.
Digger dying and the Hutch McKinney reveal was originally planned to be the cliffhanger end of the season. The network ordered two more episodes at the last minute since the show was becoming a phenomenon, and they came up with JR getting shot and the rest is history.

If they’d already planned on JR’s shooting as the season finale I imagine it’s possible they may have kept Digger alive and Pam as Digger’s Biological Daughter.

If they’d had ideas about what they might do the following season, those would have likely changed once “Who Shot JR?” became a thing.

random thought: instead of Jenna, pairing Ray with Jamie romantically would have been exquisitely awkward given the actors. Pouty-faced passion!

(for the purposes of the thought experiment, let’s imagine they aren’t cousins, something I’d forgotten when I began this ill-faced post - maybe Jenilee comes back as a different character after Jamie dies for the third and final time)

I don’t think Ray would’ve had a problem with it given Lucy and the hayloft, would he?

(Okay, well, technically he didn’t know he was a Ewing yet when that happened but it helps your experiment so I won’t edit it)

Post Jim Davis, the best seasons were 6 and 8 IMHO
Season 6 is probably more highly regarded, with the Battle for Ewing Oil and arguably the 2nd best cliffhanger in the show's history
I never quite liked season 6 as much as some others because the whole notion of splitting Ewing Oil 50-50
is just too implausible.

I liked season 8 better, except for "Swan Song". I know it was a great episode, but I just can't watch it again.
I think that Jason Ewing's family challenging ownership of Ewing Oil was a great idea.
It provided an opportunity for Cliff to seriously challenge the ownership of Ewing Oil.
Jamie was a good character, played surprisingly well by JLH
I think that Jason should have been there, though.
I didn't care for ignoring the "imposter' possibility. Didn't Jenna say in a low voice
that Lucas Wade and Jason Ewing hated each other?

It gave Ray an opportunity to join his brothers, and even be at odds with Clayton, to a degree.

It would be the last season that Dallas had exceptional ratings.
After PD's departure, ratings never made it back to the season 8 level.

Some thoughts on season 10

If WP was Jock, would the season have ended differently?

Would Wendell have gained control of Ewing Oil? More likely, Jock would have battled JR and Bobby for control.
I can't see Jock teaming with Wendell
More interestingly would Jock and Cliff teamed up? Unlikely but still...

The scene where Pam admonishes Bobby for helping JR... Pam, you do realize that Ewing Oil as an ENTIRE company
is the focus, not just JR's ownership%. Pam apparently learned nothing when she had part ownership of Barnes-Wentworth,
especially that ALL the Company's owners are responsible for its actions
