Poor Sue Ellen, she deserved better. Deprived as usual from having her own nice car. Had to wait till Kristin was sent packing before she was rewarded with her own nicer car.

I'm sure the station wagon was quite a car in its lusday but I fail to see the appeal.

Plus, if you think about it, it made no sense. Sue Ellen was into the finer things and even though JR was a rotten husband, he didn't deprive her of luxuries.

I’ve always wondered if that car was just meant to be for laughs perhaps. Were we supposed to think that J.R. had a bit of a cheapskate side when it came to spending money on a new car for Sue Ellen? Maybe if the marriage was in a better place he’d get her a new ride with no problems, but the fact that they were having so many issues might’ve kept him from wanting to buy her one.

he didn't deprive her of luxuries.
I don't recall any of the men particularly lavishing their women with luxuries, their wealth was just there.
I remember JR buying Sue Ellen a ring after Baby John was born which she refused, then JR brought her a ring when they bumped into Cliff and Donna. He brought her flowers and then a necklace which she threw at him in her townhouse. And that ugly glass ornament which she also threw!

We know he brought her perfume coz she threw a bottle of it at him and he moaned about the price!

After she discovered he'd slept with Afton in their marital bed, Sue Ellen chose all new furniture and a bed without consulting JR.

He did buy her a ring when they got engaged the second time.

Bobby brought Pam a dress once and a business as well as her car.

Were we supposed to think that J.R. had a bit of a cheapskate side

I reckon! I've listed above the things I remember he gave to Sue Ellen but I'm sure I haven't remembered everything.

There was usually a motive or he had a guilty conscience when he did buy her something.

For Sue Ellen JR was tight with affection and the genuine giving of gifts.

Bobby looks the tightest out of them both!

And Sue Ellen looks like she threw things all the time................
A glass at JR at the sanitarium
A bottle of burgundy at him on the stairs as well as the things above.
Love her!

Yet she always missed. You’d think with all the practice she had she would’ve thrown at least one thing that finally hit him. Did she ever make contact? Sue Ellen throwing random stuff at J.R. is an entirely different thread in of itself when you think about it.

Clothes and jewelry and I get the sense that Sue Ellen had almost unlimited buying power at the finest stores in Dallas.

Unfortunately not, well only with that "expensive joke" necklace which wasn't going to cause any damage, more's the pity.
She certainly had a bad aim. I've said before she was too used to being cross-eyed, sober or not!

Oh I agree, of course she could shop in the finest stores, she had an appearance to keep up so JR and the family were happy for her to do that.

Sue Ellen really just wanted JR's genuine love and affection. How nice would it have been to see him surprise her with a gift as a token of his GENUINE love.

He did in the dream of course, that's why it was in the dream!

We see SE in furs and fine clothes and fancy jewelry. Also, she is constantly shopping or talking about shopping. JR seemed to let her buy whatever she wanted, even when they were on the outs.

My daughter (who had never seen Dallas before) had an interesting take on JR and SE when she and I binge watched the series. She felt JR clearly had a lot of affection for SE, even though he mistreated her. She points to the scene in the hospital when baby John is born and his attitude towards her after the Holly Harwood debacle. She said that if SE had just been able to accept an occasional indiscretion, she probably would have had a happy life with him. When I responded that most women can't put up with cheating she pointed out that SE knew who JR was and only pretended he could be faithful. She said SE should have just looked the other way and JR probably would have moved heaven and earth for her.

It seemed like there was a seasonal battle for Ewing Oil, in one form or another, after Jim Davis passed
Jamie and Cliff, Jamie and Jack, Jock's almost return, dream season events, Bobby gaining the name, JR the assets,
Cliff joining the company, Bobby selling the company, James and Michelle, etc.

Lots of missed opportunities. What if Jock had a son or daughter with Amanda who could have been in
the story?

No offense, but I really hope your daughter don't accept a marriage like that. It might have not been an abusive marriage (Just one slap by JR if I remember), but it was mentally abusive. Cheating should never be accepted in a marriage. And no, when JR married Sue Ellen, she probably had no idea he'd be the way he became. It's been said more than once, JR enjoyed the chase, and as soon as it was over, he moved on.

My daughter has what we call "Peter Pan" syndrome. She won't ever mature emotionally past about 14. Makes her think differently than most of us. Most of her knowledge about adult relationships comes from TV. I explained it to her just as you said, but not sure she really grasped it. Luckily, I don't ever have to worry about her marrying or navigating an adult relationship.

if SE had just been able to accept an occasional indiscretion
Well that was Momma Shepard and Kristin's attitude.

Sue Ellen did accept it until he flaunted it publicly and caused such embarrassment infront of her friends.

With Holly Harwood it was because they hadn't long re married and JR swore he was a changed man. Sue Ellen stupidly believed him because she wanted to believe him and wanted their second marriage to be how she envisaged their first one should have been.

As for Sue Ellen wearing fine clothes and shopping, I've said before she had a certain appearance to keep up. If she looks good, JR and the happy family picture look good.

Just one slap by JR if I remember
JR and Sue Ellen were both guilty of physical abuse, he did slap her once as well as grab her roughly on other occasions.

However, he was also verbally abusive, using damaging derogatory words and forced himself on her sexually. He also attempted to force himself on her on another occasion and threatened her with rape when he got rid of Peter.

It always astounds me that Pam is held in such high regard, when she could be as unfeeling, and avaricious as the rest of Ewings, along with being so self-righteous and hypocritical

In my youth I placed Pam on a pedestal...the saint of the group.

After my rewatch, not anymore.

Over the years she morphs into a cold, bitter narcissist. She also doesn't seem to like anyone else being happy or in the case of Bobby, moving on.

She's great the first couple seasons. As it moves forward, the character just continually gets worse and once she's on the search for her mother which pretty much leads to a lottery win, there was no going back.

I think she gets a pass from fans for her looks and of course how the character was in the beginning.

I think Afton loved Cliff, but that's questionable when earlier on she had drugged him so JR could get the evidence he needed.
She also protested to stand by her man, but was obviously jealous of how he felt about Sue Ellen. Maybe winning THAT contest meant more to her than Cliff actually did.
The only person Afton loved is Afton.

Tweak the character a bit such as giving her a golden ticket like Pam, she could've become a female JR.

At the beginning yes I agree but I think she grew to love Cliff.

Not sure about her motives though, she didn't want Sue Ellen to have him but maybe that was because it was Sue Ellen and she probably secretly loved that Cliff was always in battle with JR.
If JR wasn't going to be long term and kept prostituting her out for business deals with false promises then Cliff was the next best thing.
I do believe she loved Cliff though, or she was extremely desperate. All the time she spent with him in the hospital and he called her Sue Ellen! Previous to this she pleaded with JR to let her have him with all his business and finances in tact.

The golddigger was always there even if she did become a better person.

A female JR? No way.

Afton absolutely had her faults but I think she did love Cliff. I would say his suicide attempt was when she started showing how much she cared about him. Of course Cliff wasn’t the easiest person to love. Afton tried to get him to drop his obsession with beating J.R. and she put up with as much as she could until she had enough. Despite her mistakes I always got the feeling she cared very deeply for him but Cliff was just too self absorbed to meet her halfway.

My only gripe with Afton was her chastising Sue Ellen, considering she slept with JR at Southfork with Sue Ellen being literally downstairs during Mitch and Lucy's wedding.

Yes, that and also sleeping with Gil to get Cliff his refinery, but overall I did like the character much more as time went on. I liked how Afton was always the most perceptive character in the room while everyone else could be totally oblivious. She knew Clayton was in love with Sue Ellen before just about anyone else did and she had Katherine’s desire for Bobby pegged as well. Afton wasn’t perfect, but she was very smart. She understood some of the other characters better than they did themselves sometimes.

Afton's character had flaws, but she did evolve and grow.
