Liz Stoddard is fed up to the back teeth with Willie's shenanigans and therefore he has to leave Collinwood - tonight, immediately and on the double.
But that's easier said than done.
At first he got missing and he had to come back to Collinwood in order to leave Collinwood (ha!) and then when he finally shows up he has no strength or will whatsoever - something to do with a stupid vampire sub-plot - but then Jason decides that it is of utmost importance that Willie makes a proper and detailed apology to Liz and Carolyn. They're not very interested, they just want him to go away, but Jason McGuire is having none of it.
This gives Willie just enough time to collapse (for real, surprisingly) when he sees the painting of Barnabas and that means he can't leave Collinwood.
Jason himself has become a resident rather than an unwanted guest and it's not clear to me what's taking him so long to get whatever he's trying to get.
Is one day more special than the other day? Something or someplace or sometime that will get him a bigger blackmail fee?
Strangely enough it's Liz who's doing all the threatening and then Jason bends over backwards to keep the peace at Collinwood. In that regard, his character has ended up in sort of a no-man's-land and I think that's a pity.
But then again, it would all be upstaged by the arrival of cousin Barnabas anyway.
Barnabas is a very Dickensian character whose speech is constantly interwoven with humility and decorative apologies, something that could start to annoy me at some point.
Hopefully Maggie's day-old coffee will speed up the cultural integration process.
From a vampirish point of view it would make more sense if the über-gothic Collinwood was the old house and the Colonial mansion the current residence.
Or why not Matthew's cottage, previously inhabited by the vampFire?
Willie has become Barnabas' slave and he's done a great job with the interior. Say about vampires what you like but they have a nose for talent.
The creepiest part (so far) is the sound of howling dogs, it's truly unsettling.

Just put another picture on the wall.
With all that secrecy about the locked room in the basement I had expected someone to find Barnabas there, instead of a new location.
Wouldn't it be super-spooky if the vampire had been living below the drawing room all along?

They're not great at explaining time travelling...
So, Barnabas wants the Collins family history book that Victoria left in 1796, but since Eve went back in time in 1968 to get it in 1796 to save Peter it shouldn't be there. Except for some reason, the show reasons that since Eve went back in time in 1968, it should still be there in 1897 since her going back in time hasn't happened yet.
????
Either way, it was completely pointless attempt to reference past shows because obviously the book only states that Quentin went overseas. Plus I'm pretty sure they actually discovered this in past shows so who knows what the purpose of this little plot point was.

Apparently the vampire curse works differently in Collinsport since Willie and Maggie haven't turned into the undead after being bitten by Barnabas.
Still, it's all familiar territory and therefore not as intriguing and exciting as the phoenix storyline.
I miss the first Willie and Jason's psychological terror in Collinwood, Liz and Roger's endless discussions, Caroline's obsession with Burke and how that affected her friendship with Vicky.
It's all about Barnabas and I think his 18th century theatrics are getting a little monotonous.
Maggie has become that "leave me alone!" soap girl - like Rachel in PEYTON PLACE and Fallon in THE COLBYS - and the biggest problem with that transformation is that it doesn't give the other characters a lot to respond to.

I know how good it can be and I have no intention whatsoever to lower my standards. I did that with CWDynasty - repeatedly - and the only "payoff" was hitting rock bottom. I vowed I was never going back there. Plus jamais!
Not that Dark Shadows is in danger of becoming unwatchable, and then there's Richard Channing and Mark Jennings to look forward to (and hopefully some bitchy sparring between Roger and Barnabas!).

In DS vampirism, I assume the first "nip" just makes you highly suggestible/loyal to the vampire. The more he snacks, however, the more weak the subject becomes, leading either to death or becoming a vampire. Barn and other vampires can of course kill people by over-indulging in their snacking, but it seems they have enough self-control to choose when to hold back.
In the case of Barnabas/Maggie, he wanted to make her think she was Josette, then turn her into a vampire so she'd be his "forever Josette" (I guess), but of course it was all doomed to failure for several reasons (most notably his original 13-week contract). The one bite on Willie just made him turn into a submissive, jumpy servant. Barn later bites another character simply to make this character into a sort of hench-person and daytime "guard" over him as he slept. I would say there never was a hint he would continue snacking on this person to turn them into a vampire; in fact, after a time he tells the person they are "released" and their attitude immediately shifts back to how they regarded Barnabas pre-bite, as if they forgot how Barn had that hold over them before (though I think it was just the show's eagerness to shift gears away from that plotline). Much further in the series another vampiric character bites someone and turns them into another "obedient servant," and like Barn's situation the bitten person seems to think they're in love with the biter. So there is SOME continuity, but your mileage may vary.

there will be some storyline arc's you won't care for during the history of the show and that's fine. yes i do remember him saying that one person i remember i didn't like that he did that to them but if i recall their memory of him being a vampire they kept that secret once they were freed. that sounds about right though in the case one one Character he's a vampire in like one or two bites and that aired in (1968) i think? i'd say who it was but than i'm not sure where you currently are in the series.
as i've said already i'm sure i don't think they kept track on the history of the show really only cause if you look at any other soap from back than or hell even now there's not many that have aired where you go back and see it from start to finish long after it ended.
they were suppose to do a sequel for the CW to the series well that was apparently cancelled now they are shopping it around i don't think they had even started filming yet but i think a script is done at least. i hope one picks it up i'm dying to see the surviving cast members come back with characters that will be their kids like Maggie would prolly be a grandmother on the show and her grand kids and kids would be on it and if they had her married to Joe he'd long be dead since Joel Crothers which i think i spelled wrong? he died in what (1985) wasn't it? i'm not sure how they would do Barnabas but i'm not a tv writer since he's been gone for about a decade or so now too

Maggie's transformation, the music box melody and Barnabas' foresight of true happiness and eternal love turn this long-winded scene into something oddly spellbinding.
They may forget some details later on but they know exactly what they want to achieve when the camera rolls.
Poor Willie, enslaved by Barnabas, pestered and beaten by Jason and now the sheriff tells him he's going to watch him like a hawk. So funny to hear those half-baked denials in that mousy voice.
Victoria Winters is such a nitwit but at the same time very convincing as a soap actress who's trapped inside a supernatural horror story.
