When DS introduced Barnabas, it was meant to be a thirteen-week story arc, with Barnabas written as a full-tilt villain since he was scheduled to be killed off at the end of the arc. It was a last-ditch effort to give the show a ratings spike since it was suffering ratings-wise (as well as creatively). It was only after he caught on that the writers realized they now had to keep him on--and to keep him on, they had to make him more palatable and/or sympathetic. I'm sure if they had known Barnabas would be a hit, they would not have written themselves that far into the corner. The trip back to 1795 was the culmination of this reformation of the character, explaining his villainy was thrust upon him by an even worse villain(ess), and that he honestly wishes he weren't such a blood-thirsty killer. Soaps have this dubious tendency to reform their villains in this way simply because the fans seem to have this love/hate relationship with villains. Note that during the course of the series, Barn would occasionally lapse into heroic territory, only to be dragged back into being bad as fans continued to have this love/hate relationship with his being a vampire with a conscience. They didn't want him to be too bad, but not too good, either. So rather than framing this as an effort on the part of the writers of DS to change the way we looked at the vampire legend, I think this new approach was just a product of trying to write a vampire into a soap opera, to fit a totally irredeemable character into what is an extended morality play. A "soap vampire" would need to be defanged (for lack of a better word) in order to be viable in the long-term, since soaps are obviously "all about the long-term".

Victoria is sitting in the blue whale waiting for Maggie and Sam Evans and Earl Holliman's husband while the theme to "A Man and a Woman" plays on the jukebox and then they all discuss that mysterious little girl named "Sarah" they've spotted around Collinsport.

You got the impression that every time Elizabeth left the mansion to go to town, Roger was dressing up in her fabulous Ohrbach's originals and having a fashion show.

But Elizabeth is a recluse who doesn't leave the mansion. I expect Ohrbach's comes to her. Roger seems very efficient he probably has his own Ohrbach's wardrobe in a locked part of the mansion.

Jeez, this is the most passive-aggressive show. In every scene, everyone accuses the other of "imagining" everything.

Elizabeth is offering to open up the west wing of Collinwood so Vickie and her Burke can marry and movie in, but he doesn't like the idea of his bride being on call 24/7.

Julia accidentally makes Barnabas look really, really old. A giant bat starts squeaking outside Vickie and Carolyn's bedroom window at Collinwood, preventing any lesbian sex which might have occurred.

"Camp" is such a polite word. That actor is supremely terrible.
Next to the woman who played Bathia Mapes, he's the worst actor I recall ever appearing on the show. And that is indeed saying a lot.Their first foray into time travel was much more subtle.

A bitten Carolyn has told Barnabas that Julia has hypnotized Victoria into staying away from him. Barnabas sends Carolyn to Collinwood to find Julia's notes on his treatment, but Julia catches her. Julia realizes, in a voice-over, all this means that Barnabas plans to kill her. And Barnabas says, out loud and for the 300th time, that he plans to kill her.

I love the introspective/pensive mugging she does for the camera when they're playing the voice-overs of her thoughts. But the VO sure does beat the artificial way soap writers will write entire scenes of characters talking to themselves.
In the Story of Soaps docu-special that aired last night, I spotted a clip of Joan Bennett (Liz) opening a window at Collinwood, as well as the memorable scene of Barnabas's hand reaching up from the coffin to strangle Willie Loomis mixed into one of the many montages of clips from all the soaps. There might have been others I missed, but it was nice they tossed in some DS material since people often forget it was right there in the ABC soap lineup alongside the others back then. I would have fallen off the couch if they had included Victoria Winters repeating her catch phrase, "I don't understand!".

Alexandra Moltke Isles which is her married name has called Victoria winters a pretty stupid person or something along the lines of that, the thing with Vicki is that if you watch her 1st episodes she was pretty smart to a certain degree and is a strong Character than they made her dumber than box of rocks. it really angers me how the reason she left the show was 2 reasons 1. she was preggers that is understandable but she wanted to come back and nearly did at that time the entire cast had played different characters and she wanted to do the same, she wanted to play a Villain but they would not let her saying it wouldn't be convincing and hurt the show and i disagree. i think it would have been interesting to see her play something else i think she said that Vicki was a pretty dense character i can't remember as it's not in front of me.
