I recently started watching from the beginning for the second or maybe even third time. And before that, I started from Barnabas's arrival, but I've never made it as far as the Richard Channing years. I'm not really sure why. I don't think I ever stopped likng it; it's just that there's so much of it and other things got in the way, I suppose. But hopefully, this time ...

I guess it wouldn't hurt to check out an episode every now and then, nobody is forcing me to binge-watch it.
And maybe I'll find something that's going to hook me again. I like housekeeper Sarah Johnson and now she's playing the puritan Abigail who doesn't get along with Elizabeth/Naomi....that could be an angle to sink my teeth into.

Wednesday has become my 1960s day where I'm re-watching everything I have from the 60s in vaguely chronological order. So I've just done the first 25 episodes of DARK SHADOWS from June '66 and now I'm doing PEYTON PLACE from the same month. It's probably how serial killers watch TV.

If that means I also have the time to watch other shows then three years isn't so bad. But my initial plan was 1 year and I was still feeling confident about that when I watched the Phoenix and Jason McGuire storylines.
But the last batch I've watched - Barnabas vs. Julia Hoffman ft. Willie Loomis - was insufferable, and that hadn't happened before.

I'm having good luck with the format PlutoTV uses to air the show. They recently expanded the number of episodes they're repeating, but they still seem to start over (with Barnabas's arrival) every week or so. Watching these chunks out of order (five or six episodes from various periods) isn't a problem when you're familiar with the series overall. The bits I haven't seen in 15 or more years are fun to see again. With it on a 24/7 loop like this, different parts of the series end up in prime time just about every time the loop rolls around.
And if I tune in to a "sucky" part of the show one night, I can just move onto something else. Twenty-four hours later I tune in and roughly 48 episodes have passed. Whatever they were doing the night before is now a distant memory in Collinsport.

I had a little scare when my "dark shadows episodes" search didn't immediately show the playlist but thankfully it's still there.

Settle in on the couch underneath Maggie's multi-colored throw blanket with one of Roger's decanter bottles full of sherry on the side-table. Just don't leave Josette's Music Box open for too long, or else you might lose track of time. Even if you do manage to drift off, you can rest assured Bat on A String will show up outside your window to cause a ruckus just in time to make sure you don't miss too much. And for God's sake quit dipping into Julia's Doctor Bag O' Sedatives--they don't mix with Roger's top-drawer booze. Too many of those things and you might end up having really weird dreams involving cackling blond temptresses with bulging eyes and wearing too much chiffon.

Oh, absolutely. I just saw it in Chris's room when he briefly stayed in the Collinsport Inn (when he killed Mr. Drummond from Diff'rent Strokes), and then it was in the cottage on the Collins estate when he moved into that. It follows everyone, everywhere. I joke that Angelique is a Collins Family Groupie, but that afghan makes her look like a slouch.

Countess/Julia Hoffman enters the Collins mansion "Dominique Deveraux" style and then there's the one-upmanship exchange between her and Joshua/Roger.
I hope there's going to be more bitchery between Naomi and Abigail.
The casting of Angelique is sheer perfection, everything about her screams "Katherine Wentworth" - and that was only her first 5 minutes.
Yeah, I think I can do this.

My favourite part of 1795 is the fact that Josette is so dreary as a person. You get the feeling that Barnabas has completely romanticized her for the past 170 or so years to the point where the actual Josette barely resembles the Josette in current-day Barnabas's mind.

That makes perfect sense to me. And apparently the old house has not been restored "exactly the way it was!" because Vicky's reaction when she enters the living room is "it all looks different!"
I find Barnabas more watchable now he's not senselessly arguing with Willie Loomis because Someone Must DIE!
They're not wasting any time with Angelique, two episodes later she's already voodoo'd her ex-lover into a soap coma of sorts.
Is it a good thing or bad thing that Vicky is living with doppelgängers (except for Barnabas and Sarah)? It must quite an ordeal to be trapped in a different time but at least it looks familiar and she's doing the same job.
I found the scene in the unfinished new house surprisingly mind-boggling, the future feels like the past or actually it's happening at the same time like it did in Twin Peaks.
No sign of David, Caroline, Willie and the sheriff yet!
I wonder how Phyllis Wick is coping.
And should they find letters that Vicky wrote 200 years ago?

Most difficult of all was getting used to everyone only bathing once a week. Word on the street is that the Collinses built a new, bigger house not because they needed the extra space, but because no amount of Febreeze was going to fix that stinky funk in the Old House. It was just easier to pack up and move. They built Collinwood up on the clifftop to get some breezes blowing through.

Victoria keeps mentioning "a long time ago" in a mysterious way so, basically, she has now become the 18th century Barnabas.
Caroline/Millicent has arrived and she giggles like waitress Heidi from TWIN PEAKS. David/Daniel is also expected - they're all travelling together and yet they all arrive at different times.
Angelique is plotting how everyone should feel about this or that resident and it kinda looks as if she herself is writing the Dark Shadows soap.
There's a slightly more pleasant side to her character because she also rebels against the privileged establisment, albeit solely for selfish reasons.
Oh look, Matthew is in it too, as "Ben", and Maggie/Josette is still the queen of daytime SCREAM! (so much for that image of the ethereal and enigmatic lady as described by 20th century Barnabas).

Though I love Nancy Barrett in general, her Millicent was like fingernails on a chalkboard after a while. She was too stupid to live!

yeah i agree her Pansy Fay is a lot of fun i think later on you can tell she had fun with her, have you noticed in some scenes how bad some of the acting is from some of the cast that normally can act. some of it is painful to watch because it's out of their element i think and being told to go that way wasn't helping either since 99% of the time they only could do 1 take. i wonder how often they really had to do more than one? since it was so expensive to have to do a 2nd or a 3rd time. i don't remember there ever being a 3rd as far as i'm aware of at least not on the dvd sets where they have the slate that shows you/tells you which take it is. i dunno how in the hell they did act with the flies that would come on set and continue to act with a straight face
