Interview Susan Sullivan & David Selby
Behind the scenes of Falcon Crest 1989 June 26
IN LOVE WITH A PSYCHIATRIST
Susan Sullivan (Maggie Gioberti in “Falcon Crest”). Today, she is seriously thinking about marriage, her first, after forty-four years of celibacy. “I have always been frightened by these women who remain in the shadow of their husbands,” she said not so long ago. Initially, she had refused the role of Maggie in “Falcon Crest”.
— Because I didn't want to be a wife serving coffee to her husband.
The Lorimar producers therefore modeled the character according to his desires. Susan Sullivan attributes her hardened celibacy partly to the painful memory of the difficult couple formed by her parents, partly to her great youthful love: he had asked her to choose between him and the profession of actress. She had sacrificed love...
But everything is different since she met Connell Cowan at the end of last year! . Man should respond to her demands. He is a psychiatrist and author of a book entitled “Srnart women, foolisn choices”, on the psychological problems of women in Carriere! Susan Sullivan met the man of her life during a dinner for four at the home of her "Falcon Crest" co-star, Dana Sparks (appeared in the fifth year of the soap opera), and her husband, Steve Sparks, ace of the finance.
It’s not uncommon for “Falcon Crest” people to hang out outside of work. When you spend so many years side by side, it is inevitable that bonds form between one and the other.
The living example of this is, sitting next to Susan Sullivan, at this cafe terrace in the vicinity of Hollywood Boulevard, the masculine and smiling presence of David Selby, the dark Richard Channing of “Falcon Crest”. There must definitely exist a good god who places happy coincidences in the path of reporters in June. But it is also true that American journalists are much less interested in television stars when, in the summer, the major soap operas stop and make way for reruns. The actors, less harassed, take the time to live and chat more easily...
“We decided to go shopping together,” explains Susan Sullivan. “I'm a first-class snooper. I can find anything,” jokes David Selby. “Susan is looking for furniture for her house. Did you know she had a new house for a few months?” Poor Susan probably hasn't finished being teased about her romantic plans!
But I'm really happy for her. She is a very dear friend. And I had the opportunity to have dinner with Connell. He is indeed a very nice guy.
SHY AND MEGALOMANIAC
David Selby, always dressed to the nines in “Falcon Crest”, has today dropped the tie and, under the jacket, wears jeans and sports shoes.
To tell the truth, Channing is much more brilliant than me. I know it might seem stupid for an actor, but I'm shy. For years, I didn't even dare look at a camera! This is what I love so much today: a white tuxedo and acting like a megalomaniac. This is my release. In reality, they would send you to the asylum for that. On television, they offer you a few million dollars... Before “Falcon Crest”, it would have been impossible for me to imagine spending a few hours talking about myself. Finally, my friends at Lorimar and CBS begged me: “Please, if you want to do the show, agree to interviews from time to time. Let people know you. » So I try... But Susan usually tells more about me than I can. She’s my press officer (laughing). I try as much as possible to bring him to each interview...
The story of their friendship is astonishing. Their relationship was almost limited to “hello, good evening” during the first years of the soap opera. Then, as incredible as it may have seemed to early viewers, the script wanted Maggie, Chase's widow, to remarry Richard.
It is impossible to love each other on the screen while being frozen away from the sets.
“David is a really interesting man, a multi-faceted character,” says Susan Sullivan. “You have to know it really well to appreciate it. He doesn't say all that, but he is the only actor I know who has a doctorate in philosophy. He has a wonderful house, a wonderful wife, two charming daughters and an attractive tall boy.”
“Not forgetting the dog,” smiles David Selby, who specifies: “The eldest, Jamie, will be twenty years old. The girls are fifteen and twelve years old.
THE DANGER OF LOVING A COLLEAGUE...
David Selby left his family in their home, secluded in the harsh wilderness, in New York State for a few days. During filming, they rented a house in Hollywood but, as soon as they could, they returned to the countryside (“I like gardening,” explains David Selby). Today, however, David Selby had some business to attend to in California and it was an opportunity to stop by and see Susan No question of jealousy on the part of Claudies, Chip in private, the wife of Davie Selby.
David has a fantastic wife. I had some fears before meeting Chip. How was she going to accept that I loved her husband so much in “Falcon Crest”? But she immediately broke the ice by telling me: “If you love my husband, I can only love you!” Too many wives live in terror of knowing their husbands have relationships with female colleagues. If we start to doubt, something creaks in the couple. You should not give blind trust, but to deprive your partner of freedom is to kill love!
And is the understanding also good with Jane Wyman, the terrible Angela Channing of “Falcon Crest” who, according to rumors, reigns supreme on the set?
“She’s really great,” comments David Selby. “In difficult times, she led by example. She never misses a beat, she always knows her lines to the bone and she never misses the opportunity to tell you if something is wrong. Plus, she lets me eat her favorite vanilla biscuits that she brings every day!”
That she brought, at least. Because the undisputed star of the soap opera, the ex-wife of ex-president Reagan, would have done better without vanilla cookies. She is in fact diabetic and her very worrying state of health necessitated her admission to the hospital four months ago. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. “With such a high sugar level,” a doctor diagnosed, “you can expect anything: gangrene, atrophy of the limbs and soon degeneration of the entire body.”
But, at 75 years old, with an inflexible character, Jane Wyman declares herself ready to resume her place in “Falcon Crest” as soon as the school year begins. She convinced herself, not without reason, that an iron will overcomes all obstacles. But is this enough in the case of such a disease? Especially since she seems to make a point of not changing anything in her habits.
“She refuses to stop turning,” says David Selby, “
