I liked that it felt a bit "off" - Dexter has been building this fantasy world for all these years where he keeps himself restrained and avoids his urges to kill. I really enjoyed the build up until the moment where he just... snapped. I liked the touch of the classic voice over being absent until that moment.

It was very watchable though I did keep wondering if there is really any new ground to cover here. There's certainly elements that will hold my interest for now such as Deb's new role and teenage Harrison but it's hard to see it enduring for multiple seasons again. Maybe this run of episodes would work best as a limited series.

I thought it was a limited series. Something about rectifying that ghastly series finale.
As exciting as it was to see Dexter back, I can’t imagine more seasons. Though, like anything, if this revival is a success, they will probably try and milk more.

It took me quite a while to finish the season. I was only watching in fits & starts; 2 or 3 episodes in one night, and then I'd forget about it for a month.
This season was about mid-tier DEXTER to me; not as good as the show in its earliest seasons, but not as worn out as it was by season 8. No table flipping from me regarding the finale; I liked the finality of it.

Yup.
The only way for Dexter to end was either with him dead or with him on death row. And sending him to death row and having a huge part of the last season dedicated to his trial, media uproar and everyone's reaction wouldn't be satisfying with the ten year break. So death it is and Harrison was really the only one left to do it.
With that said, I hope they don't do a Harrison centric spin-off - he's obviously not like his father and just a messed up kid - him caring about Audrey, him being uncomfortable with killing Kurt. In that sense he's more like Matt - he was also screwed up by his father and while an asshole, he probably didn't intend to kill those people or just had suicidal ideation.
With that said, I hope they don't do a Harrison centric spin-off - he's obviously not like his father and just a messed up kid - him caring about Audrey, him being uncomfortable with killing Kurt. In that sense he's more like Matt - he was also screwed up by his father and while an asshole, he probably didn't intend to kill those people or just had suicidal ideation.

The ending had been spoiled for me some weeks back and, at the time, I kind of rolled my eyes at it. However, it played out better than I expected.
As you say, there were really only two ways to end this: dead or imprisoned. Sure they could have kept the door open for more seasons by having him on the lam, but midway through the season I had already concluded that I didn't want more of this. It was good to see DEXTER back and to close things out, but 9 seasons of this was more than enough.

In hindsight, and without spoilers, I think that the showrunner has pulled a big, stinky Cider House on this. I mean, I liked the series up until the very end, where it all changed and made me realize what a waste of time the new season had been. I could oversee that Dexter was sleeping with a girl who looked like her (step)sis (I didn´t make it up, did I?), and that he had become a clerk at a gun shop run by a gay guy. I was ok with all this (and what I don´t mention what would really BE spoilers...). But then, when everything was over, I read interviews with Mr. Clyde Phillips (NuCider), who thought his work was ideal and people who said bad things about it were wrong. Ahem... To this I say...

My ideal ending still would've been him on death row and a good part of the season focusing on the journey there, but it needed to happen with the original series and some of the key characters, you know, alive to react to it (Deb, La Guerta). For "fixing" the ending this was good enough without relying on retcons.
I think the issue is that people just got too attached to Dexter and forget that he's not a reliable narrator - so people don't want to see him die and for the story to end. But Dexter of course isn't a good guy - he was always an animal hold in a rickety cage held together by a rigid code. But Dexter would break that code when it suited him - hell, I'd argue Matt didn't fit his code since I doubt he had intent to kill those people; I think he didn't care and had possible suicidal ideation because of the trauma his father put him through. Not saying that he didn't belong in jail, but he was hardly the type that Harry would've meant for Dexter to kill.

We finally finished this the other night.
When I heard about a new series, part of me rolled my eyes. Another chance to cause a buzz and make more money, another PRISON BREAK or ‘24’. Then I heard rumours about them wanting to right the wrongs of the original final season, so I felt more optimistic.
Watching the first episode gave me mixed feelings. It was interesting to see Dexter back, but it felt tired, and yet by the end of the first episode I kinda bought into the idea.
It took a while to get through this season, mainly because after my initial excitement of the return, I wasn’t as excited to rush the season. The following episodes were okay, some really good moments, but nothing really sticking out saying yes, I’m glad it’s back.
Curiosity is what kept us both watching and the relationship with Harrison was enjoyable.
