Permission granted as it’s a beautiful dog. And not a Thing of Evil which isn’t permitted in The Magic Kingdom.

Thank you so much! I didn´t want to include any of those sissies with skirts that appear in those dirty Disney fan-arts like this one:

1. Prince Philip
from Sleeping Beauty
prince-phillip.jpg

A brown-eyed brunette who'll slay the dragon for love. Yes please.

2. Kristoff
from Frozen
Kristoff.jpg

He scores on earnestness and adorability (but I'd probably still end up falling for saturnine satyr Hans).

3. Simba
from The Lion King

4. Pongo
from One Hundred And One Dalmations

5. Prince Charming
from Cinderella
prince-charming-thompson.jpg

Because he lives up to his name (even though he's a bit stalky with it).

6. Aladdin
from Aladdin
aladdin-thompson.jpg

Because he comes with a magic carpet.

7. Prince Naveen
from The Princess And The Frog
Naveen-2.jpg

I must confess he's here solely on the basis of his looks and that accent. And if he hadn't spent most of his screen-time as a poorly-drawn frog he'd be still higher up the list.

8. Flynn Rider
from Tangled

flynn-rider-thompson.jpg

Brash and overconfident. But another who made it in for shallow reasons.
iu

9. Prince Eric
from The Little Mermaid
FINAL-tiana26.jpg

A prince worth giving up your fins for.

10. The Beast
from Beauty And The Beast
beast-thompson.jpg

He outgrew his vanity and cruelty. Now if only he'd outgrow the Barry Gibb hairdo.

Because he comes with a magic carpet
And a big blue brassy attention-seeking genie :NI:

1. Tarzan's daddy - TARZAN
1632703361295.png
A true hero who sacrificed his own Disney fame for his son. Too bad he couldn't teach Tarzan how to grow a moustache.

2. Prince Florian - SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS
44a95cdb123e6e2775703e674c8678176a85a5c5.jpg

He doesn't get much screen time, and only one song ("One Song") but he always seems so genuinely grateful to be in it. Everything about him oozes with wholesomeness and I could see him as the new, young doctor in Plotville, Shenanigan.

3. Prince Philip - SLEEPING BEAUTY
22dda03a8d6b1469d253c25016c2954b1f4e4687.jpg

This fearless and determind prince makes a good case for the monarchical system, and the power of his sword would make me feel very safe, too.
As long as he doesn't wake me before 12 p.m. (I'm not a morning person).

4. John Smith - POCAHONTAS
6cb1595c91169d18cbc10f53e4019be3637fd842.jpg

Well...if it's going to be a choice between painting with the colours of the wind or a wig wam, thank you ma'am with Johnny blue eyes Smith....

5. Prince Naveen - THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG
b183a2966104c8a6b6ee3088b0121d4d84cb1985.jpg

As an official and well-known frog whisperer I felt obliged to include him in my top 5. The smouldering eyes and killer smile may have helped a little bit (ooh ah just).

6. Prince Charming - CINDERELLA
922fac815a48577d6a308f04662c210794f5b30b.jpg

A mix of old Hollywood glamour and Dynasty Moldavia, and therefore a bit of a diva.
But I'll gladly walk on glass for the rest of my life if that means I can sit next to him in the throne room.

7. King Triton - THE LITTLE MERMAID
1632706817572.png
Because some things you have to learn from the master himself.

8. Li Shang - MULAN
1632707805041.png
He looks like a force to be reckoned with, and combined with that Oriental mystique I foresee a lot of interesting surprises.

9. Flynn Rider - TANGLED
1632708197102.png
The millennial Disney hero who gave his princess a Covid haircut and got rid of his mother-in-law in one fell swoop. You've got to admire him for his mischief.

10. Prince Eric - THE LITTLE MERMAID
1632709317098.png
Not one of the most trustworthy princes, seeing how easy it was for him to forget about Ariel as soon as Vanessa showed up.
He's a little too cute for his own good, and a sailor at heart on top of that, but for a crown and a palace I'd be willing to accept the challenge.

6. Li Shang (12)

7. Bambi / Prince Charming (11)

10. John Smith (8)

In the next category I want to celebrate the artists who made it all possible, the men and women who have been sweating over the creations, illustrations and animation of the Disney movies.
What image - or scenery if you like - really amazed/inspired/intrigued you? Do you prefer a particular style?
This isn't about characters, but it's not necessary to exclude scenery with characters in it. It's also not about the spectacle of the sequences because I feel we've already covered that in the Magic Moments.

I wouldn't expect anyone to remember every scene (or to rewatch all the movies for this thread!) so don't take it too seriously.
And since it will impossible to have enough matching choices I'll simply reward the movies themselves when I do the tally up.
I hope you will enjoy this, and if there are any questions or doubts or confusing parts then I shall deal with it immediately...ish.

1. The Firebird sequence from FANTASIA 2000. - This isn't just an animated sequence, it's a stunning piece of art and a perfect marriage of image and music.

mother nature.jpg

2. Once Upon A Dream from SLEEPING BEAUTY. - I think all the artwork in this film is a class above that in most of the early Disney animated features. I couldn't think of a specific stand out scene so I chose this one.

Sleeping OUA Dream.jpg

3. The Army of The Dead scene from THE BLACK CAULDRON - dark, menacing and visually stunning.

Army of the dead black cauldron.jpg

4. Night On Bald Mountain sequence from FANTASIA - It looks a bit like what a group of animators on psychedelic drugs tasked with producing a scary sequence would come up with. It's a mesmerising piece of animation.

bare mountain.jpg

5. Belle dances with the beast from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - the swirling camera and the 3D feel of the sequence make it memorable.

Lion King.jpg

7. Let It Go sequence from FROZEN - especially the bit when she creates the ice stairway

8. The final scene of POCAHONTAS when she waves goodbye to John. A still from that scene wouldn't look out of place on a wall in the National Gallery

9. The Reflection scene from MULAN - and reflecting the song's title, there are some nice reflections in the artwork

10. A Tsunami hits Atlantis from ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE -

Rather than choosing individual scenes, I've ranked entire films based on having an appealing aesthetic, a distinctive style that sets it apart and an ability to capture a time, place and moment. They're the ones that look like works of art and give me the feels even in out-of-context stills.

Coming in two parts since the system didn't like this many images....

1. Bambi

Tyrus Wong’s stunning art is rich in pastoral detail and captures the feeling of being somewhere hauntingly beautiful, but with a sense of peripheral danger somewhere beyond the distant haze.

2. One Hundred And One Dalmations

A nice example of a budget cut adding to the film’s charm. The Xerox method might have earned Ken Anderson the wrath of Walt Disney himself, but the emphasis on the charming scenery gave Dalmations a unique appeal.

295-101-one-hundred-and-one-dalmatians-background.jpg

3. Sleeping Beauty

Eyvid Earle’s beautiful medieval-styled art is just charming and full of atmosphere. I'm impressed how cosy and gothically inviting the sterile stone settings look, and the crowd scenes are very endearing as well.

iu
iu
iu

4. The Rescuers

Another one from those lean years when beautiful backdrops distracted from the simpler art style. Further proof that less is more. Love that moody Riverboat setting.

iu

5. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs

The entire film, of course, is a triumph for the illustrators. Before this, a full-length animated film would have been unthinkable. If I were choosing one scene, it would be the previously-praised scene in which the Queen transforms into the Peddlar. Those long shadows. Those colours. That gothic, moody atmosphere. It’s what Disney is all about for me.

6. Beauty And The Beast

This one may be at the top end of the budget scale, but it perfectly balances intimacy and splendour. If it came down to one scene, it would be the incredible stained glass Prologue.

7. The Princess And The Frog

The South feels very elegant and magical indeed here.

8. Lady And The Tramp

This has reminded me I have an unwatched Blu-ray on my shelf...

iu

9. Mulan

So pretty and delicate. But they also did some nicely moody moments such as the Great Wall attack scene.

10. The Lion King

With the wildebeest stampede as THE standout moment.
