This contest seems to come around fast and I wonder who will win this year? The final is to be held on Saturday 13th May.

Our UK entry is instantly forgettable, we don't stand a chance of winning. It really annoys me when people say the voting is political so we can't win when the real reason for our failure is the awful songs that we select to represent us.

Agree.
Russia has almost won twice recently, and they are easily the most impopular country in Europe.

The 12 points for neighbour countries don't matter. It's the 8s and 10s that really matter. Getting some points by every country.

I like it, but it needs some tweaking.
As with most current pop songs, every note in the chorus is at max. volume, for optimal epic effect I suppose.
If they tone it down a little bit, it would sound less "armageddon", and easier to enjoy.

I have to say I tuned out a long time ago and will disagree when people say Eurovision isnt political, that waht it is and its certainly not a singing contest and voting for the best song

The only think worth watching about Eurovision was hearing Terry Wogans tongue in cheek commentry and his pre empting the votes of all countries and his sarcastic comments - remember Dr Death and the tooth fairy?

and since when did Australia and Israel qualify as a European country?
last time i looked at a map israel was in the Middle east and Australia the opposite side of the globe

Britain wont win as no one likes us, and a bit like Brexit time to pull out of it and the BBC to stop putting £££££ into it.

We could enter Ed Sheeran, Adele, take That, Elton John and we would still come in the bottom 5 and get a lot of nil points

I have no clue. I have only heard our entry and the UK entry as I've boycotted the semis.
I just couldn't find the time or energy to watch them!

Also is it just me or is it a disgrace how Ukraine have banned the Russian artist and also some Russian audience members?
I mean civilians shouldn't be held responsible for what their politicians do!

Even in the good ol' days I didn't always agree with the winning song.
I don't think the UK should win when they present an awful song, but since most ESC songs totally suck these days I also don't think the UK deserves to end at the bottom of the list every time.

I probably won't watch it tonight because I'm going to watch something else instead.

Maybe so, but "Waterloo" isn't my all-time favourite ESC song.

My favorites this year were Netherlands and the UK. But it's okay that Portugal won. Good for them since they've never won the contest before and I like that it was a melody that won.

Dont like the viewer vote and ridiculous amount of points given to some acts

should stick with to douze points as max

I don't think it matters at all that some countries vote for their neighbours, cause in the end, it's just 12 points. A country needs a helluva lot more than 12 points to win. So it evens out in the end.

Germany has ended up last, 3 years in a row now.

Good for Portugal for their first ever win.

I didn't watch it. I completely lost interest when Robin Bengtsson won the Swedish song contest. He got to jury group votes, while Nano got the people's vote. Sweden should have sent Nano. I hated Robin Bengtsson's song.

With 42 countries competing, it's very difficult to win ESC. It was much easier to win back in the 70s and 80s when there was only western Europe competing.

I agree the new system is boring. Also how it's always one song that gets lots of points and pulls ahead of the others has turned the competition into a snooze. I miss the good old days when the score could change with each voting nation. Now that was exciting!

Bumping up this thread to say that it's time for Eurovision Song Contest in this upcoming week. The first semi-final is already tomorrow and the big finale on Saturday. So anyone planning to watch it?

Also any predictions which country that might win this year?

I don't have any predictions yet as I haven't heard all of the songs yet. But I'll be watching it.

I actually like the UK entry Surie - i find it quite catchy and one of our better songs for a long time

but Im sure she wont have a hope as Europe doesnt like us!

a likely nil points from many - I hope not - I think UK could have any A lister pop star representing us and wed still be in the bottom half.

And nothing will better ABBA! The classic and ultimate pop sound - just love them

It's hard to like someone who hates you.
Having said that, Portugal was not the most popular country last year, nor Ukraine in 2016 or Austria in 2014. And countries vote for Russia even when they hate its guts when they like the song or performer. I won't state the same thing about Sweden in 2015, because Swedish men and women sure prove popular in the summer, so who knows?

Also any predictions which country that might win this year?

Currently Cyprus is the favorite followed by Israel, but bookers have often been wrong about these things--
they can predict the voting public, but the committees are unpredictable and often vote different from how the public votes. It is still quite a Eurovision scandal that Italy was robbed in 2015, the year Sweden won. The public voted for it, but the committees voted for it in sixth place, so it came in third place. Last year's winner was loved by the public and committees alike.

And I'll be watching the semi-final tonight--although the song of the country I am watching it from is terrible and I hope it doesn't qualify.

I have only heard the song from Belgium (today, actually) and I really really like it.

And the UK has totally stolen "Teardrops"!
