I assume the footage of Mark's fall originated on "Dynasty" since the dummy was in the same clothes as Mark. I don't think it came from elsewhere and they looked for similar wardrobe for Geoffrey Scott.

Right it does look like the same place that Nicholas Pearce fell off the balcony in Dallas some years later.
Lorimar, in contrast, had other preferences, at least in two of their shows: "Falcon Crest" and "Dallas" had this continuity nightmare of filming most of the exterior footage (usually) for the first ten to twelve episodes per season on distant location, i.e. Northern California or Dallas respectively. This was more like how you produce a movie, and they had additional location budgets, which came on top of their usual per-episode cost. If you break it down to the per-episode cost, "Falcon Crest" had an episodic budget of $1.25 to 1.5 million around 1986, which is the reason why the visual impact was so much better. "Dallas" actually even filmed in Hong Kong at some point. But it's always a matter of where the showrunners put their preferences.

It's a shame Dynasty didn't film more at Filoli as it was such a beautiful location. But yes I agree Dallas and Falcon Crest looked better as a result of them filming at real locations. Also Knots Landing had the advantage of being set in California so they could film a lot by the coast line and it fit right in.

Yes Dallas filmed some episodes in Hong Kong in the 1984/1985 season where you can see Sue Ellen and Pam walk around in the city. Also later on in the 1988/1989 season Bobby, JR, Cally and April went to Austria and Russia. They filmed on location in Salzburg, Vienna and Moscow. Then for their final season in 1990/91 they filmed in Paris when April was kidnapped on her honeymoon and Bobby tried to find her. So it was some great location filming there. I think Dallas probably got away with it since they were the number one show on CBS for many years. Yet it is sort of peculiar how the location filming was permitted at a time when the show was in decline. Maybe they were allowed to do that since they saved money by not going to Dallas for location filming on those seasons.

# 5.07 "Amanda":

The establishing shot for Dina Hartley's apartment (who lives "across from Alexis' penthouse") features the Larimer Place Condominiums at 1551 Larimer Street in Denver, CO. It think this is stock footage they created on distant location when shooting the "Oil" pilot back in 1981.
I don't know where they filmed the interiors of Ms. Hartley's place. That's definitely a real apartment, not a set.
5.07-01-1551LarimerSt,Denver.JPG

As per the establishing shot, McVane lives in the same building like Tracy Kendall. The filming location is The Wilshire Thayer in Wilshire Corridor (10550 Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, CA). No idea where they shot the interiors though; but this is not a set either, it's a real apartment.

# 5.08 "The Secret":

The exteriors of the Gilford - Warwick Medical Building (Krystle) were filmed at 11632 Barrington Court (at the Brentwood Village mall) in Brentwood, CA. The building was slightly remodeled, but looks pretty much like in the old days.
5.08-01-11632BarringtonCourt,Brentwood.JPG

The establishing shot of London / UK features Buckingham Palace. It is stock footage from a film library, of course.

5.08-02-BuckinghamPalace,London.JPG

The street where Blake sees Amanda is Chayote Street in Brentwood, CA. She is in front of 11608 Chayote when he first spots her.

Aaron Spelling was infamously budget conscious, so location filming was almost never going to happen. The sole time they took the cast to Denver, it was to film indoors (at the Carousel Ball) not counting their arrival, briefly on the sidewalk.

Pundits have chortled that DYNASTY endlessly used Los Angeles architectural landmarks to double as Denver.

Larry admitted that the Moscow plotline "didn't really work" and I don't think the European plotline did either --- they should have used that money to film in Texas. DALLAS was very inward-looking and very Texas-centric, and the show always seemed a little "off" whenever it left their State.. In contrast, DYNASTY could have really benefitted from some actual globe-trotting; the show always needed to be "opened up" if only to offset its innate claustrophobia, but Spelling would never have footed the bill.

Sure, Spelling's LOVE BOAT filmed around the world a couple of times a year, but the ship's fake deck area gets kind of boring after a while, I guess.

I actually really enjoyed the Dallas episodes filmed in Europe. Watching that on TV made me want to go to those places. :)

It was fun, particularly if you know these cities because you instantly recognize so many of the familiar spots they used. I was in Salzburg and Vienna a few times; in Vienna the last time in 2020. It has been quite a while since our last stay in Paris though, but since my wife had lived there for a while, we definitely want to go back there sooner or later and refresh our memories.

# 5.09 "Domestic Intrigue":

The establishing shots of Istanbul / Turkey are stock footage, of course. The first one opens on the Hagia Sophia mosque and zooms out; the second one
5.09-01-HagiaSophia,Istanbul.JPG

The hotel in Istanbul is a private residence located at 2250 Montecito Drive, San Marino, CA. They basically used the backyard with the pool area for the exterior shots. The place still looks like in the days of filming.
The hotel interiors were filmed on the sound stage.
5.09-03-2250MontecitoDr,SanMarino.JPG

For Rashid Ahmed's Istanbul villa, the interior shots were made at the sam place, 2250 Montecito Drive, San Marino, CA.
5.09-04-2250MontecitoDr,SanMarino.JPG

It seems awkward that the establishing shot for the Denver Carrington Center is now from the neighboring building at 330 South Hope Street in L.A. (the former Bank of America Plaza, nowadays One California Plaza) while they previously used the highrise at street number 333.
But maybe the company moved into the building across because Blake also has a new office — they updated it although it seems to me it wasn't really a step into a more contemporary design, but one that even looked more old-fashioned.
5.09-05-330SHopeSt,LA.JPG

The exterior shots of Rashid's Istanbul villa are from the Casa Blanca Poolhouse at 851 Sand Point Road, Carpinteria, CA. It's really surprising they went as far as the Santa Barbara area to shoot this. Going beyond the 30-mile studio zone is very unusual for "Dynasty".

# 5.10 "Kristina":

The interiors of Cheney Hospital were filmed inside the concrete building (at this time the main building) of the Pacoima Hospital for this episode. The address is
11600 Eldridge Avenue, Lake View Terrace, CA; it is nowadays the Phoenix House of Los Angeles. The waiting room where Blake and Alexis later talk is also located there. You can see the triangular inner courtyard of the building in the background through the windows in that scene; also in the later scene with Blake and Amanda where they are even outside.
5.10-01-LakeViewMedicalCenter.JPG

I'm not 100 % sure, but think the scene with Claudia on the payphone was shot on the parking lot of the Town & Country Shops and Restaurants at 11640 San Vicente Boulevard, Brentwood, CA.
5.10-02-11640SanVicenteBl,Brentwood.JPG

The exteriors of the hotel in Santa Barbara (Steven and Luke) were filmed at a private residence located at 401 North Carmelina Avenue, Brentwood, CA.
5.10-04-401NCarmelinaAv,Brentwood.JPG

I'm not sure though where the preceding establishing shot for the Santa Barbara hotel came from, maybe actually from Santa Barbara, indeed, but I'm not familiar with the structure.

That is true. Now as an adult I can definitely recognize those places. But when I first watched those episodes of Dallas I was about 12 years old and had never travelled outside of Scandinavia.

I think they probably went to the Santa Barbara area since they have a lot of Spanish buildings there. So it fit with Southern Europe feel they wanted. Also it's cheaper than going to Turkey to film!

# 5.12 "That Holiday Spirit":

The establishing shots of London / UK are apparently stock footage from there. Screen grab 2 shows Piccadilly Circus. The hotel where Alexis, Dex and Amanda are staying (screen capture 3) is The Dorchester at 53 Park Lane, London / UK.
5.12-01-London.JPG5.12-02-PiccadillyCircus,London.JPG5.12-03-TheDorchester,London.JPG

This is the first time we see Delta Rho. Exterior shots were filmed at Ventura Farms (which we already know, in parts, as Carrington Farms) at 235 West Potrero Road, Thousand Oaks, CA.
5.12-04-235WPotreroRd,ThousandOaks.JPG
5.12-07-235WPotreroRd,ThousandOaks.JPG

The establishing shot of New York City (stock) features Queensboro Bridge. An earlier part of this footage (the whole segment is a pan actually) was used in # 3.20.

hey guys @TJP @GillesDenver @Karin Schill the long search is over ! (by the way Gilles, I'm French)
i have finally found Billy Waite's residence in Caracas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have checked my 20 000 pictures of vintage tv show and movies and I have recognized the bridge in front of the house, that appeared in the movie Jagged ( 1985 ) with Glen Close
the real house was Dean Martin ranch : 1761 E , Portrero road , thousand oaks !!!
the black and white pictures are from 1972

they also filmed inside the house ( check the picture with the fireplace on my collage)
I guess the ranch was erased in the 90S .
finally we know were was that house !!!!! have a great week end

Thanks a lot for revealing this location used as Billy Waite's Caracas residence ! And it's good to see you here. Considering how many places you've identified from "Knots Landing" and your overall location knowledge, it's a pleasure to have you here!
Thanks a lot it’s very nice. I m also a huge fan of Dynasty
