You shouldn't pay it. Write back to them saying there is a transition arrangement in place until 31st December 2020 and the UK remains within the customs union during this period. I agree. This sounds like someone is making a quick buck on the pretense the broader population are all stupid and will just pay up.

There will always be a period of heightened emotions surrounding any issue at any time. I'm not discounting what you are reading on Twitter but this also explains why I avoid platforms like facebook and Twitter.

Ugh thanks for sharing. I was just wondering if that would be in place or not. I am not surprised to see that Postnord has already started taking extra fees.
I won't be able to shop from the UK either and it is so frustrating since I've bought most of my books, DVDs and CDs from there since the year 2000 when I first learnt that I could do internet shopping. It opened up a new world to me since they have stuff that is not available on the Swedish market.
I am now also worried about a book I ordered for my sister for Christmas. For some reason it has not been delivered on time and well I just wrote to them pointing out it was missing earlier this week. The book is used so it is worth about £1 the postage is about £3. But I bet the Swedish post office is gonna bill my their stupid handling fee of £6 which is ridiculous since it's more than the book is worth!
If that happens I will call them to complain since I did order the book last year before Brexit was a fact!
I've heard someone say that it depends on where within the UK the parcel is sent from, if you have to pay the extra customs fee or not. At least right now. And how well the content is described on the customs note. I don't know. 
The same is happening all over the world. Like when Trump won, people grew very loud with their racism. It's happening all over Europe, and I bet it's happening in other parts of the world as well. I think it's part of how the world in a sence has grown smaller with globalization and that people who can't see the benefits instead blames it and takes it out on "all the others" for ruining their country. A simple solution to a very complex situation. And the easy solution has always been to blame the others.
I would not be surprised if research would show that racists and very right-winged people had a lower IQ and EQ than the rest of us.
This same rule could easily be applied to those with left-winged thoughts. Personally I have no time for those on the extreme side of politics or beliefs. I've found you cannot have a rationale conversation with them. The "lefties" as we refer to them here in Australia have become just as militant as the "far right."
I think it's random, not a standard. I've received quite a few parcels from the US and it's only happened to me twice that I had to pay extra. No need to panic.
I don't agree. People with left wing views do not advocate hate or violence against a particular group of people, they just want a fairer and more equal society. To equate "lefties" with xenophobes and right-wing fascists is totally wrong. I consider myself to be someone "with left-winged thoughts" and your description bears no similarity to who I am.
