A shrewd move on Val's part. Get some random couple to take care of the babies while they went through their first annoying year, when all they really do is cry and sleep and load up poopy diapers. She already had two high-maintenance family members in the house, so I could see why she'd pass off the screamin' brats to Frank Fontana and his shaky wife.

Perhaps I can forgive her for this, but then deliberately marrying a psychopath in the hope that he would kill her children, and manipulating him into trying to murder Gary, was unforgivable. Lets face it, she's a monster.

She ran her mother into an institution, then manipulated her into shouting Val's brother off a rooftop. Had Val's plan totally succeeded, Joshua would have also taken out one of Gary's numerous slam-pieces in the fall. When Val's new husband slept with the slam-piece, Val brought Jean Hackney to town just to torture Ben into losing his ever-lovin' mind...and ultimately ran him out of the country.

A lot of people died when they flew in some way too close to the sun that is Gary-Valene: Ciji, Chip, Cathy's husband, Jill, Danny, Pat Williams, Scott Easton. Gary and Valene obviously didn't directly cause their deaths and some brought their deaths on themselves through their own actions, but getting mixed up with Gary and Valene's live is dangerous business. Scott Easton and Cathy's husband didn't even know them, but they became involved through Abby and her place in the Gary-Valene love affair. In fact, she's one of the only one's who not only survived but prospered because of her connection, but she's Abby. There's no one like her.
Frank Williams lost his wife because of Valene's husband Danny, and his daughter was almost seriously hurt because Jill cut the reins of the horse she rode, thinking Gary would be on yhe jorse. I would have liked a scene in which Frank took his grief over Pat out on Val and ended their friendship saying somethinh along the lines of, "You attract drama and madness into your lufe and other people pay the price."

Jill couldn't kill Val with typical poison, since Val had built up a high tolerance to poisons from drinking that awful coffee. She'd tried simply hitting Val over the head with the coffee pot, but the hair spray/shellac compound Val used on her mullet had a helmet-like effect that absorbed the shockwave.

Exactly! It's pure evil to try and blame Sweet Innocent Angel Jill for trying to kill Val.
She was simply testing her, yes. Meanwhile, Val on the other hand MURDERED Jill. Or maybe it was Gary or Karen. And also, Jill is still alive.

By this point of view, maybe JR was right in taking Lucy away from "poor Val."

I wouldn't have been beyond acceptable if Val did indeed kill Jill and it made it look like an accident and no one ever knows.

Well, Val is someone who responds positively over time to every setback, and gets stronger. It's fully in character for Val that Val can go from being terrified of Jill, to then having that switch 180 and having Jill terrified of her.

I can still picture her getting emotionally slammed, and then visibly drawing on some inner reserve to overcome it.

Yes. Imagine Val killing Jill, finally sick of her shenanigans, and Gary covers for her? They bury her body in the back 40 of Gary's ranch. NO ONE ever knows. Gary builds a new barn over the spot. Mack suspects something is up, but Val and Gary are never suspected, Val tells everyone what Jill did and everyone assumes, through some letters and audio recordings, all edited and created by Gary and Val, that she just left for parts unknown.
I doubt the writers wanted to go that route. It might have turned off long time fans. Although, by the 10th year, things were slipping and it sure would have boosted some interest.

Better yet, BEN returns and kills Jill. Val and Gary help cover it up. ALL remain silent.
