Jim usually returns every 3-4 years, so i'd be very surprised if didn't return by beyond 2022 at the very latest.

Bringing back Gwen Davies (Annie Hulley) would be a good choice also to give Jim storylines, as well as Jim's other son Andy (Nicholas Cochrane) .

Turning Jim into a petty criminal has not been the way to go, he may have had his faults, but bringing him back like they did the last time doesn't seem right.

I totally agree with this statement. I've been disappointed with the way the writers have been ruining the character. It isn't the old Jim we used to know, there's absolutely NO way the Jim of 1989-2000 would have robbed a bank, beat Peter Barlow up in prison and lied and used his dead daughter's name to try and con his own family out of money (Gwen did same to Jim back in 2000) . Oh, and why Jim had the white walking stick in his last stint i'll never know.

Jim and Liz have been done to death now, any such romance between them has completely gone, it would therefore make sense to bring back Gwen to give Jim some more storylines in line with the old Jim, and bringing back Andy too. I mean EastEnders brought Lorna Cartwright back when Phil Mitchell's alcoholism got to its critical stage in 2016 with Phil's eventual liver damage/cirrhosis.

The only way to redeem Jim now would be exploring his father son relationship with Steve and Andy, meanwhile Gwen would probably return to stir things up between them, maybe Gwen could become a soap superbitch like Janine Butcher (so much potential storylines there) and eventually Jim, Steve and Andy would unite together as a family and Liz would probably be a promiscuous woman once again.

I always remember Phil and Jim starring in The Firm in 1989 alongside each other on the same side. If East Street had been done in 2007 instead of 2010, Phil and Jim could have met and possibly got along like Dev and Masood did.

Bring the old back Jim back, no hidden agendas.

Maybe bringing back Alan McKenna (Glenn Hugill) would be a good idea too where the stuff happened with Fiona and Jim gatecrashing the wedding - It was the first time Jim actually seriously had an affair, albeit with Fiona as it transpired at the time back in 1996/1997.

The photo below is of the actor Glenn Hugill more recent- He was in Noel Edmond's "Deal Or No Deal" tv show not so long ago. Again, similar to Charles Lawson, it all depends on if either of the actors wanted to return and become long-term regulars. Angela Griffin (Fiona) made a recent cameo return to Coronation street IIRC, and also, Nicholas Cochrane (Andy) was in an episode of the Midlands soap called Doctors during this last year on the BBC.

Actor Charles Lawson meanwhile has recently since criticised Coronation Street on GB News and how he doesn't expect Coronation Street to last the next 10 years, and how he's been a bit harsh on himself by saying he doesn't believe the character Jim McDonald would fit into the show now - It's just what the show needs, and why I gave up watching Coronation Street properly in 2000 after Jim left and only ever watched it since for Jim's returns.

Personally I disagree with what he says about Jim, at least the good thing is that at least Charles Lawson has taken breaks/absences from the character of Jim, unlike Steve McFadden/Phil in EastEnders, where Phil is just a geriatric asthmatic, Grant/Ross Kemp was always the more compelling brother out of him and Phil, and how a lot of the narrative revolved around Grant.

Anyway back to Jim McDonald, I always felt he had more potential than either of the Mitchell Brothers, there's more that could've been done with Jim, a full-time regular with a moustache and a brown leather jacket - He would be like Bill Webster/Peter Armitage and a grandfather to Amy, Jim McDonald would be a lot older now and taking a bit more of a back seat, because times and people change and how he wouldn't be like he was 30 years ago, he'd be advising Tyrone and Gary Windass, maybe Jim even sharing his old Army stories from the Falklands war in the 1980s. I remember Jim McDonald and Bill Webster worked together as builders in the 1990s also.

Because the 2018 storyline with Liz ruined the chances of Jim and Liz ever being together again, bringing back Andy/Nicholas Cochrane would help make up for the mistake, and/or even one or more of Andy's ex partners, like when Vicky/Chloe Newsome returned shortly after splitting up with Steve/Simon Gregson.
