I am wondering how he would have faired in the MeToo age. I can just see him as head of Ewing Oil and facing charges of sexual misconduct! Then he would face the battle of METOO! That would have been a battle for the ages! Who would have won?
Regarding him facing charges of sexual conduct, remember this is not a publicly held company. Ewing Oil didn't have stockholders to answer to and JR had no board of directors as publicly held companies do, so who would have the power to fire him for sexual misconduct? I remember that JR had women in his office such as Serena, the call girl, with whom he had sex right in his office, but without a boss to say "You're fired for screwing a call girl when you're supposed to be working" I don't see who would charge him with anything about sexual conduct. he certainly was guilty of adultery but as far as any work related crime related to sex, I don't recall him mixing the two things. he kept the two things fairly separate. There was one time when he went to Sly's place when he was feeling down, and she slept with him. The next morning he felt better and more confident but he said to Sly that while he very much appreciated what she had done for him the night before when he had been depressed, that had to be a one time thing since she was his secretary. He said she couldn't keep sleeping with him and also keep working for him and she wanted to keep working for him so he did the opposite of what is sometimes done in the business world where a woman must sleep with her boss to keep her job. That's highly illegal as well as immoral for a man to make his secretary sleep with him so that she can keep her job. Fortunately that's exactly the opposite of what happened between JR and Sly since he very deliberately told her that since she worked for him he couldn't have anything sexual between them happen again.
BTW, JR sort of did get Cliff in trouble for sexual misconduct. Although it wasn't sexual misconduct per se, it was still something that happened as the result of having had sex and the resulting pregnancy. It was actually Cliff helping his then girlfriend get an abortion in the time before abortion was made legal. JR had it publicized that Cliff helped a girl get an abortion and that abortion was botched by the doctor who was sent to prison as a result while his patient, Cliff's girlfriend, died. I think this happened in Dallas' first full length season. Cliff was running for political office and when he was forced to admit the truth, it cost Cliff his chance of winning the election and therefore the candidate Ewing Oil was providing with financial backing won the election. It was an excellent storyline; do you happen to remember it? Pam had only married Bobby fairly recently and it was during a dinner when Pam accidentally let it slip that Cliff's girlfriend had died. Cliff accused Pam of telling the Ewings this on purpose but she only said it because she got upset when JR asked why Cliff had never gotten married and suggested maybe Cliff was homosexual. That made Pam upset enough that she told JR that Cliff had been so in love with his girlfriend (whom Cliff had wanted to marry and who had died as a result of the botched abortion) that he had never fully recovered from her tragic death and that was why Cliff had never been married. If I remember correctly, it was either the first or at least one of the first times that Pam found herself caught in the middle between he love for Bobby and her love for Cliff in a situation where she found herself having appeared to having taken the Ewings' side over Cliff's side. She didn't take a side and certainly didn;t want to betray Bobby or Cliff. The entire situation put a terrible strain on her marriage and on her relationship with her brother. It showed what a difficult situation Pam had gotten involved in by marrying into a family whom Cliff was obsessed with trying to destroy. You could say that after the death of his girlfriend the Ewings were the only people left who gave Cliff his life's purpose and meaning because his every action was always motivated by something having to do with the Ewings. Cliff rarely had a conversation in which he didn't at least mention the Ewings. Cliff seemed like after his girlfriend's death he would have had no direction or purpose to his life if the Ewings did not exist.
