Actress June Brown, who played the much-loved character Dot Cotton on EastEnders for more than three decades, has died at the age of 95.

Brown first appeared in the series in 1985, the year EastEnders was created. She stayed until 1993, returning to play the same character from 1997 until 2020.

Dot Cotton was arguably one of the most significant and memorable characters ever in EastEnders

Reading about the Royal visit to Albert Square a couple of days ago my mind was wandering and I got thinking she was pretty much the face of EastEnders due to her longevity.

Hope there will be some tributes from the Beeb. I’d love some of Dot’s one-and-two-handers to be made available.

Here are lots of lovely pics of June’s career (including one with Violet Carson on Corrie): https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-...own-a-life-in-pictures?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
I wasn't aware of her work until she appeared in EastEnders but she really did have a long and varied career. She was also an entertaining chat show guest because she got to an age when she didn't really care what people thought and could (and often would) say and do outrageous things if she wanted to.

Yes - that’s always fun in a guest. Others’ reactions can be fun as well. I enjoyed that legendary Norton episode where she appeared alongside Lady Gaga who seemed transfixed by her. Such a surreal image.

Yes, she appeared in Corrie in 1970. This in itself led to a guest appearance on “Happy Birthday Coronation Street” in 1990 - a programme hosted by Cilla Black to celebrate Corrie’s 30th year on air.

In it, she appeared in a segment on famous people known for other roles who have guested on the cobbles.

When they say an actor/actress is/was born to play a role, make no mistake, June Brown was born to play Dot. Such an iconic character. When I use to watch Eastenders back in the early days Dot was the stand out character for me.

R.I.P. June.

Just caught the end of Lord Michael Cashman on BBC Breakfast giving a beautifully articulate and very balanced tribute to June.

He praised June’s role in moving LGBT visibility forwards, with viewers seeing Colin through her eyes at a time when gay men were viewed as the enemy.

He commented that she was a classically trained actress who expected professionalism from her fellow actors and didn’t have much time for those who didn’t know their lines.

He said lovely things about her humour, and said that he’d look at clouds accumulating in the sky and think of June puffing on her menthol cigarette.

There was apparently an uncanny impression of her from Michael as well, but I tuned in too late.
