Korean Dramas

I did some digging, albeit not too much, and I don't think this has been touched on here before. (If it has, merge the two threads or redirect me to the existing one.) My fiancee is a big fan of Korean dramas, which is just a piece of the ever-growing "Korean wave" that's been sweeping American popular culture.

We've been watching MASTER'S SUN (sometimes called THE MASTER'S SUN) online over the past few days. We're like six episodes into what is like a seventeen-episode series. I must admit that I originally had misgivings about these types of shows. It's not that I thought they'd be bad, but I was honestly not looking forward to having to read the subtitles. When my fiancee asked me to watch them with her, I remember asking her if there were any Korean dramas that were already dubbed in English. Considering her favorites weren't dubbed, we started with MASTER'S SUN. We're not quite halfway through the show, but I must say that I am enjoying it. It's kind of like a GHOST WHISPERER-type story line spinning through the show ─ and please don't hold me at the stakes if my comparison isn't concrete because I'm not all that familiar with GHOST WHISPERER other than it stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and she plays a woman that can communicate with ghosts.

MASTER'S SUN is really finding its groove where we're at now in the story. It's definitely got me hooked and desiring to see more of it. I've gotten use to the subtitles quicker than I personally thought I would, and sometimes I can read and watch all at the same time without even realizing I'm doing it.

Any fans of K-Dramas?

The only one I've seen is the original The Good Doctor. I don't know if it's representative of Korean dramas in general but it's more melodramatic than the American version, a big sweeping musical score, that sort of thing, but quite engrossing once you get used to the form.

Yeah, I was a little skittish of the format at first. Like I say, I'm usually lazy and don't want to take the time and actually read any of the subtitles. Once I got use to MASTER'S SUN, however, I've gotten totally engaged. I'm hanging on every word, and I pride myself in having so easily "mastered" the art of reading and watching TV at the same time.

It's got me wanting to watch more.

I’m not really into the Korean dramas but my best friend is Korean and she will not miss an episode. Masters Sun and the original Good Doctor are her favorites. I just can’t do subtitles

It took me an episode or two to get into the hang of the subtitles. They're the primary reason I've never watched any of the foreign movies starring men and women of old Hollywood that I like. When we started MASTER'S SUN, however, I got into the swing of it quicker than I thought I could. It really isn't too bad. If I don't do it often, though, I'm sure I will got through another adjustment period when we start to watch another one.
