Their scene in the nursery with Meg still carries the echoes of their staircase scene following Laura&#039;s rape and speaks louder than any wailing from Karen could. Greg and Laura are even allowed one last scene of love-making, before Laura painfully packs her things, tidies up the house, leaves instructions to the help and hands Meg over to Greg for one last time. Greg won&#039;t even look at her. Laura stands behind him for a little bit, part of her unable to go, part of her wishing he would say something to her, but then she picks up her bag and exits, a final act of kindness not done for her. When Laura drives her car down the road and away from her life, and tells herself &quot;Just hold on. Just hold on.
