Mitch/Lucy was like Gary/Val except that the roles were flipped with Lucy being the wealthy one and Mitch being the one that was kind of an outsider in the Ewing family.

Realistically... Gary/Val were not compatible nor was Lucy/Mitch.

I think her inability to make any sort of relationship work was due to the lack of parental love... Lucy was a tragic character.

Mitch lost me when he started complaining about Lucy living off her own money from modelling
that’s actually the one time I was a bit on Mitch’s side. For Lucy to pull the “I work my butt off to put food on the table” routine when she had been handed one of the most sought-after modeling jobs in Texas for absolutely no reason other than the fact that the insipid Alex Ward had a crush on her aunt was just ridiculous.

Sure, she had to show up at the shoots and what not and that could be grueling, but when Pam took her to the “audition” she didn’t even know was a portfolio was, let alone have one. She’d put in precisely zero work and was handed the job over dozens of young women who’d been at the grind for who knows how long. It was absolute “my aunt’s a Pretty Ewing” Privilege.

Contrast that with Mitch, who came from a poor family, worked his way through college, got the grades and test scores to get into medical school, and was working his way through that, probably putting in 60-70 hours a week between classes and studying and night jobs for close to 8 years by the time he met Lucy. All of this with absolutely zero family help.

Sure, Lucy made money with her “modeling career” and Mitch was annoyingly whiny and stupidly chauvinistic virtually 24/7, but I wouldn’t have blamed him for really telling her off over that.. not for using her money from modeling, just for the “I worked so hard for this” bit.

All he did was complain and throw tantrums. Lucy deserved better

Mitch did indeed do all that. But I'm not sure why Lucy "deserved better."

Valene, who seems soft on the surface, got tougher through every setback, and became very strong that way. That makes her very compatible with Gary, who is insecure and doesn't like responsibility. However, Gary needed Abby to help him accept responsibility, because Val would try to shield Gary from things beyond a typical 9 to 5 job.

Val was close to her middle age father, Jeremiah, when growing up. Jeremiah died when Val was 11. Val had certain issues with her mother, Lilimae. I actually think that Lucy and Lilimae would have gotten on brilliantly, considering their senses of humour. Lilimae was a dreamer, wanting to be a country singer, and she often left Jeremiah and Val alone for long periods while she chased her dream.

I hated the guy she married (Mitch Cooper) and that she married him twice! He was a misogynist who cloaked his insecurity over the Ewings' money as him being against greed. But even when Lucy made her own money working, that made him uncomfortable. I thought she and Mickey worked well
but that ends tragically. That's another layer to the tragedy of Mickey's story which was ahead of its time. Even today, American society does not feel comfortable talking about euthanasia.

Mitch lost me when he started complaining about Lucy living off her own money from modelling. It was already a bit silly to expect a woman in her late teens from one of the richest families in Texas to completely cut off all financial ties. A lot of women from Lucy's background wouldn't have given someone from Mitch's background any thought, but Lucy had a different outlook and fell in love with Mitch and other working class lads (most of all Mickey), and Mitch blew it. Lucy wouldn't have minded helping Mitch out financially either, if he had just adjusted his attitude a bit.
UGH he had such a bad attitude! If he had a problem with the Ewing money, he should not marry someone with the Ewing surname. He was so insecure and sexist but he cloaked his insecurities as him being against greed. Whatever. He was a jerk. I hate that she married him again!
