Columbo and MacGyver had distinct characteristics. Is Murder, She Wrote so unique as a concept that it's even worth recasting?

I mean, obviously they see value in the IP otherwise they wouldn't do this, especially as they'd already attempted at a tv series earlier.

I agree though - Murder, She Wrote was essentially a modern day Miss Marple with the appeal of Angela Lansbury in the lead role. You could in theory just do another tv series with a charismatic older leading lady as the Miss Marple character and keep the cosy murder mystery vibe. But again, I think a movie under the Murder, She Wrote IP would increase both the value of the old tv series and hopefully make MSW fans go see the movie with a new generation.

Having seen Margaret Rutherford in the Miss Marple movies, which is the inspiration for MSW, I much prefer the Miss Marple movies.
No disrespect to the great Angela Lansbury, who was great in the role of Jessica Fletcher.
I just never cared for how the writing always made Jessica look like a busybody who was the only smart one in the room.
All the other characters seemed clueless

It will also hinge on whether they try to capture the "TV show" feel of the series, or if they go for "big-screen excess" the way these "TV show adapted for film" projects usually end up. Jessica is a character best suited to TV, in my opinion. Film people will try to cast someone like Jennifer Lopez or Nicole Kidman. :fp:
I kind of want to go to the universe where Jennifer Lopez is cast in this film :p

I agree. The appeal of the show was Angela Lansbury. I just can’t see how it would be Murder She Wrote as we know it without her.

not gonna work and must be hated

Quite simply it'll fail because Jessica Fletcher will always be associated with Angela Lansbury, it's the same with JR Ewing and Larry Hagman on the original Dallas. They are both so identified with their parts that attempting a recast will simply not work . :)

Cabot Cove appealed to me too. I skipped a lot of episodes that were set in New York or other cities and countries (which looked like some street sets I knew from Universal Studios).

You don't know what you've missed buddy. There's a lot of terrific episodes you've missed by doing that. Please reconsider and try to watch them please. :)

You're right about that, but the danger is that it ends up being a bait and switch exercise.

I'd argue that even JR Ewing could conceivably be revived due to his distinctiveness as a character. Without Angela Lansbury, Jessica Fletcher is virtually interchangeable with any number of mystery solving eccentrics.

The Cabot Cove episodes are clearly the shows highlights (Seth is a god in my household) but there’s all kinds of fun to be had in the episodes set in places such as a circus, a zoo and virtual reality!

They tried casting Nicole Kidman as Samantha (or an actress playing Samantha) in a version of Bewitched, which tanked at the box office.

Didn't help the public loved Elizabeth Montgomery, and wouldn't accept anyone else in the role.

There was the infamous Legend of The Lone Ranger film, where some little known actor was cast, but his acting was so poor they had Jane Seymour's husband dub his voice. Not to mention the treatment of Clayton Moore, the actor from the original TV series.

Emma Thompson is my bet.

Now that I'd be willing to give a chance. I love the idea of Emma Thompson wearing big comfy sweaters as she solves mysteries in a small seaside town. One major change I'd have is having the character David Tolliver from the episode "Lovers and Other Killers" become a recurring presence on the show.

This review will explain why:

I guess they would have to pursue an actress who can "play older" the way Lansbury did her entire career. If they hire too young, then it becomes a bit of a joke, but if they hire too old, the actress might become overworked and unhappy with the pace.

The gruelling schedule on MSW was too much for Angela at one point.

Hence S6 of MSW having the guest detectives so Angela didn't have to appear in much episodes (except for the opening and closing to show the viewers they were still watching MSW).

Unfortunately that season was the first time MSW fell out of The Top 10.

Eventually Angela returned full time, and her production company came on as co-producer.

I think Melissa Gilbert would be an excellent casting choice if they wanted to bring it back as a TV show. She is a known commodity and well-liked. She's 59. Unfortunately she has apparently left Hollywood and isn't acting any more. But then, if it's a movie maybe she'd agree to it since it would only be a few months rather than a seven year contract. This recent photo of her just screams "Coastal Grandma Jessica Fletcher":

I have no idea who that even is.

She was one of the Spice Girls!

Nicknamed Baby Spice.

Here's a photo of her from her Spice Girl days.

That was down to the way Murder She Wrote was produced, she found the production schedule exhausting.

However Universal were very accommodating with Angela because they altered the production schedule allowing her more time to rest between episodes, when Corymore came onboard to co-produce the show.

She was a real trooper Angela Lansbury and very sadly missed but she'll always be with us because of Murder She Wrote. :)
