Nightclub owner Peter Stringfellow dies aged 77

Nightclub owner Peter Stringfellow has died at the age of 77, a spokesman has said.

The businessman, who had cancer which he had kept private, died in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The so-called King of Clubs opened a string of venues around the world and his eponymous club in London's West End became an magnet for celebrities.

The Beatles, The Kinks and Jimi Hendrix were among those booked as Stringfellow began his empire in the 1960s.

His wife Bella and their four children have asked for privacy.


His publicist, Matt Glass said: "It's very sad news. He passed away in the early hours of this morning. It was kept very private, he didn't want to tell. He wanted to keep it a secret."

I last saw him about 8 months ago buying flowers on Marylebone High Street in London. He looked well but cancer is a cruel disease which can cause your health to deteriorate rapidly.

Pole dancers will be flown at half-mast in his memory.

Quite a man and did a considerable amount of £££ to charity

I really admire people who keep the illness private and out of the press especially a man who spent so much of the 80s and 90s in the press
