That was some heavy-duty '80s hair on Judi Evans! And she couldn't have been more than 19 or 20, despite the hair making her look 35.

Hmmph....he couldn't even "Save the Earth" from Phyllis Summers.
Michael Damian, aka Danny, did take David Essex's Rock On to No.1 in America, which the original never managed. (The David Essex original reached No.5).
Michael Damian's version never charted in the UK. (In other countries outside of America, Rock On went to No.1 in Canada, but flopped in Germany and Australia, the latter which took the David Essex original into the Top 10. Only New Zealand took the Michael Damian cover into the Top 20.)

I never made the connection that it was him singing the original song until now.
Given this was the NBC station in Los Angeles, it would be facing Y&R at the same time.
Depending on timeslot (noon\11am or 12.30pm\11.30am - to enable NBC affiliates to pick up Generations, NBC offered them either slot) it would mostly face Y&R.

Y&R ruled that timeslot. Generations was also up against Loving, whose ratings were similarly as bad yet ABC stuck with that show for years, even trying to revamp it as The City, while NBC dropped Generations just shy of its two year anniversary. I think that while Loving didn’t rate well nationally, it did do well in some key city markets, which may explain why ABC kept it on air for so long.

ABC owned Loving, which made them more likely to give it special treatment over a soap they just licensed from another production company. Even if Loving made less ad revenue than a soap they bought from another production company, ABC would keep every penny that it made and that often made the difference. There was also the continued loyalty to Loving's co-creator Agnes Nixon, a soap creator/writer who had basically put ABC daytime on the map with her creations, All My Children and One Life to Live, and was still occasionally called on to consult on soaps that had "lost their way".

Not the most envious spot for a show to try and go up against back then.

Generations premiered during the same season that Y&R took the top spot out of all soaps (having shared number 1 with General Hospital the year prior) so it was on the back foot from the very beginning.
