There must be a way to transfer 4:3 ratio to 16:9.
The only option is to crop the top and/or bottom of the film, but that means less picture.

I'd always prefer material to be issued in its original format. In the case of RTE, it's presented in 4:3 because that's how it was shot.

However, I also like to be able to choose how I view it. A good smart TV/media player combo will get round this by using the anamorphic widescreen setting. I don't fully understand the process, but anamorphic basically takes all the information of a 4:3 image and presents it as widescreen without the need to crop and without the image looking stretched.

I was sceptical about this, since the so-called "anamorphic" setting on my old TV/DVD combo some years ago simply seemed to zoom in which was distracting. However, technology has come a long way. My current TV/Blu-ray player (or some combination thereof) does exactly what it promises, and it's bloody brilliant. Especially for someone who watches a lot of old TV shows. It's like magic.

I hadn't, but I've just watched some highlights. It's funny how some scenes are almost frame-by-frame reshoots of the original, while others are far more "creative".

Yes. The scene, after the old man finds her in the mud, is shot almost the same way. When he "stitches" her face, after the crocodile attacked her.

Most of the movie is over the top camp. I mean, when she falls in the river, and the she's "killed" by the croco, it's like all her relatives can feel her death. So we see her kids run and jump, and friend jumps, and even her favorite horse jumps, over reacting like they actually feel her death. All of this in slow motion obviously lol

Everything is more. I mean, this movie "Greg" is even more evil in the way he plays the character lol

And don't forget the singing and dancing...

It was like watching Quint in Jaws.

This Return to Eden remake is too much of everything lol

The catwalk scene is hilarious.

Lol yes. And the scene when we see her for the first time with all her make up, in the publisher's office. I almost laughed at loud : I think she was way prettier before having all that paint on her face lol

This remake is kinda of great. I mean, everything is more and it knows no subtlety. They deliver the camp with absolutely no shame, as it had to be at the time/

How is that possible?
I have no idea Willie. If I did I'd be working on such gems as resurrecting Dallas and presenting it in 16:9 and digitally remastered. As it is I recently purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements and it now incorporates Ai technology which converts black and white photographs into colour. One of the hardest things to get right is skin tones and as someone who has enjoyed photography over the years even I'm impressed how well it does. I even fooled my father when I showed him a photo taken back in 1942 when he was a toddler. He remarked he didn't think colour photographs were available.

Star Wars creator George Lucas was horrified when they discovered the original print film for a A New Hope had deteriorated. He handed over the stock film to a company to clean everything up and it was released as a box set. This was many years ago and technology has evolved. Surely Warners Bros has at their disposal the means for this to happen.

As much as I enjoyed the mini series I'll give this a miss. Checking Sanity's website under additional details it's stated the series will be presented in 4:3 ratio. Well this won't do on my 55" smart TV. How is it I can use software to colorize a black and white photograph with astounding results yet these production houses cannot release a 16:9 version? I want this series to fill my screen. There must be a way to transfer 4:3 ratio to 16:9.

In 8 years Dallas will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. Warner Bros. is a juggernaut of a business. I'd hope someone is already planning a special 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray release with improved coloring and presented in 16:9 format. Wishful thinking I suppose.

Hi Rove,

It's a DVD release so if you set your DVD player to specify 16:9 on the picture settings your player will automatically stretch the picture to fill the screen.

That's how I watch all my DVD's which are 4:3, the player automatically stretches the picture otherwise you get black bars down the side of the screen.

Hope this helps. :)

I've tried to visualize this over and over again, but I still can't wrap my head around it. It can't be possible.

Changing a square avatar into a soap bubble version makes perfect sense, of course.

Same here. I have no idea how it all works, but I've decided to just accept it does. Gift horses and mouths and all that.

Even so, there's a vast amount of technology and ingenuity that goes into each and every soap bubble.

How is that possible? They can't simply add more film to the left and right in order to make it longer.
The only option is to crop the top and/or bottom of the film, but that means less picture. Surely that can't be a good thing?
What they sometimes do is stretch the left and right sides of the images (approximately a quarter on each side) leaving the middle of the recording as it was and because most of the action in TV shows take place in this area this approach doesn't significantly impact negatively on the appearance of the recording. For other scenes they will crop either the top or the bottom, or both, of the image to create the 16:9 ratio. They then use computer technology to enhance the film/video to maintain the quality of the final image. A different approach will need to be taken for every camera angle so it's an expensive process.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the original release date of November 2020 was put back to mid-January 2021.

Here is the final artwork for the new boxset re-release of Return To Eden.

I hope all of you have it on pre-order from the Sanity website.

Oh? What has a DVD got to do with the pandemic?
I hope all of you have it on pre-order from the Sanity website.
Incidentally, I did check the sanity website today to see if there was any news about Sons & Daughters Collection 2. There wasn't.

Oh? What has a DVD got to do with the pandemic?

If you were aware of the Covid -19 guidelines you would know that DVD's are made & produced by the retail sector. As it is non-food & doesn't supply the NHS, the retail sector is one of the first to be closed down during a lockdown. I hope that's made it quite clear for you. :)

The new re-release was released on the 20th January 2021.

If you don't want to order direct from Sanity, I have seen some of the new boxset on eBay.

It's probably on Amazon now too. :)

But trickery and enhancing is not the same as re-shaping.

The picture quality on the series is quite good. There is still some tape distortion occasionally but for the most part the quality of the picture is great.

It's a lot better than all previous releases of the twenty two episode series. :)

Finally! That's great to know. I'll be investing in this one at some point then.

Via Vision seem quite determined to bankrupt Aussie drama fans at the moment. There's this, the Sons And Daughters DVDs, and now I see they're re-issuing the first two and a half seasons of A Country Practice in one set. It's more than flesh and blood (and wallet) can stand.

You won't be disappointed with the picture quality on the TV series. All previous releases, the MRA release, the Danish & German releases of the twenty two part series of Return To Eden where all a bit dodgy. This one is much better. As I said there is still some tape distortion occasionally but I was still impressed by the picture quality. The show itself was made in 1985, so it is thirty six years old this year!

As for A Country Practice & Son's And Daughters, just be thankful they're getting released. Oh by the way, I've noticed on eBay the new boxset of Return To Eden is going for about £55.99.
