Rewatching Knots Landing

Agree about Vanessa. Also the conflict between Mack and Karen that had nothing to do with temptation or ANOTHER midlife crisis, but rather their basic contrast in communication styles and dealing with outside stress: Karen wanted to yell, scream, talk it out; Mack internalized everything and be the strong, silent man. But their basic perfect chemistry won out in the end, as it should...

Really? Did we watch the same show?

In S14, he did keep his mouth shut more than usual ;) . But he thought it was best for Karen not to know about the illegal things and the dirty tricks he was pulling to get Mary Robeson out of their lives. His attitude was that he was going to do what he had to do, and he seemed to think Karen would object or somehow stop him from doing them so he shut her out of the decision-making process. She of course hated that.

We were specifically talking about the Mary Robeson storyline....lol. Agree, our Mack was NORMALLY quite effusive...But he shut down and refused to share his pain with Karen - mainly because he felt helpless and ineffective - 2 characteristics not normally associated with him...

when I rewatch the serie, I skip every scene with Mac . Karen and Sid were a great couple and the actors had a real chemistry .
OK, so what you're really saying is you don't really like Knot's Landing and skip over 2/3 of the last 10 seasons. Gotcha...lol

I remember my late mom watched season 14 and she was team Mac while my dad was team Karen... while both thought it was ironic that Gary hesitated in sleeping with Kate because he felt like it was disrespectful to Val.. when he had no issue doing so when Val was alive LOL

Your parents had great taste! The most stable couple on the show, human and imperfect.

In episode 12 of season 14 Tom and Paige trace Joe Robeson to the racetrack.

Tom: “I’m going to arrest him.”
Paige: “Here? He will run away.”

Old man Robeson will run away? Why does Tom agree?

Paige: “Watch me, I’ll get him.”

She goes to Robeson and starts with a southern accent. Why? They’ve never met and have never talked on the phone. He doesn’t know who she is.

Who wrote this?

Due to the venue, she probably figured Joe was a fan of old nags.

I can see why Gary is like that. Gary could talk to Val about his weaknesses when Val was alive, and know that even an angry Val would listen to what he had to say. When she's "dead", he doesn't have Val around as any crutch anymore and is worried about disrespecting Val's memory.

Proving Gary had a soul after all. But we all know where his "conscience" was located...lol

Karen was domineering so Mack did the right thing by shutting her out. She was a great wife to Sid and such a louse when it came to Mack.

You really think so? I thought they were a great match! I mean, they both should have communicated more and she certainly should have been more supportive about his work, Wolfbridge, and concentrated more in the bedroom, but overall I wouldn't classify her as domineering with him: He had way too much testosterone to be dominated...lol

Oh I've finally found the rewatch thread, I knew there had to be one!
I'm so glad I started a rewatch. I first watched in 2018 ish and I attempted a rewatch a couple of years ago but the self-contained episodes kind of put me off getting into the groove of a proper binge.
I made the decision around New Year that I definitely wanted to get back into it and I am so pleased I did. I'm on season 3 now and I'm awaiting the introduction of Mack at some point. I loved the Sid/Karen relationship during my first watch, and subsequently the Mack/Karen relationship afterwards. This time, I found Sid slightly less loveable towards the end but it might've just been knowing and preparing myself for what happens to him meant that I wasn't so attached.
There's something funny about rewatching and knowing that certain things are going to happen but being unclear when they'll happen. When will Mack show up? I'm not sure. When will Paige show up? No idea. When will Greg appear? Not a clue. But I know it's coming.
Anyway, another random thought is that they did a fantastic job with Abby from the get go. Donna is just stunning and so nuanced in her performance, but the writers also gave Abby a real edge about her which I am so enjoying. The little breadcrumbs of a long game towards Abby/Gary is fascinating. I had totally forgotten about just how well Abby and Val got along before Abby and Gary became an item.
I've always liked Karen too, but I really do like her so much haha. Her comment about feeling like she missed out on activism is such an informed self-reflection.
Val is so complicated; her sunny, sweetness is just wonderful, even when she's constantly put upon by the people around her. Lilimae is just the worst lol. I find her grating to watch.
JR showing up in KL is a delight too. The writers gave JR such a comedic element which Larry clearly enjoyed playing. It's kind of nice seeing JR show up and not be in charge; the change of situation gives the character time to be something else for a little while.
I had written on another thread that Richard is also kind of nuanced. What a jerk he is, but also he does care, sometimes. It's so interesting to see that complexity in a character.
Final thought (for now, because I'm sure I have more thoughts I just haven't remembered), I adore the sense of community in Seaview Circle. I assume this is partially true and partially exaggerated for plot. The way the people on the cul-de-sac interact is so natural and supportive. When people talk about it takes a village, this is what they mean. It's so comforting to watch.
Edit (I knew there was more lol): Kenny and Ginger. I had zero interest in rewatching for them, I remember thinking they were such boring, useless characters. This time around they're... ok. I like Ginger a lot more than Kenny, but I'd still not particularly care if they disappeared. I know I get my wish soon. Don't recall how it happens or why. We'll wait and see.

Mack isn't in season 3. It's a bit of a slow burner that season, but still has lots of classic scenes/Knots moments. It really builds momentum towards the end as they move into the continuing drama format. Prepare for the retcon on Sid's death investigation in season 4 as well. That threw me when I first re-watched the show again.

Season 4 is when KL really took off.

Self-contained episodes can be frustrating in a first watch because you want to see the full-on soap opera, but once you've watched the whole series then those early episodes become increasingly fascinating - and many of them were actually quite good to begin with (including Dallas, Falcon Crest and Flamingo Road).

I quite agree with the above. I remember being really frustrated with season 3 the first time i did a re-watch when it was all shown again on CBS Drama in the UK in the 2010s. But I was so desperate to watch the missing seasons 5 & 6 that I had missed first time round that I didn't have time for all the little side stories and guest characters that came and went, never to return.

However, now season 3 is one of my faves, so many interesting moments, like the Christmas episode One of A kind where Karen's old ex turns up and thinks Diana is his daughter. Even 'Rose and The Briar' which exposes Lilimae's deviousness, and The Three Sisters have a weird charm about them that is uniquely Knots - when else will we see Abby relegated to the trunk during a vacation trip?

I also agree Dallas and Falcon Crest also had some good standalone episodes early on in their respective runs. I enjoyed Season1 of Falcon Crest much more during a recent re-watch. The second episode is very stand-alone, 'A time for Saboteurs' when Chase's flying buddy turns up and nearly gives Maggie a brain tumor when they low fly over her head. It is interesting in character building, fleshing out Chase's character motivations and his Vietnam past, and also bringing in Julia's vulnerabilities early on when Paul tries it on with her.
