I have to agree. I must be one of the few not to have clicked with Game of Thrones. I've also heard horror stories about the final season.

Mad Men is the series that springs to mind for me.
There was every reason for it to be a series I'd love: the mid-century setting; the references to real world events; the jazzy soundtrack; the soapy relationships.
I bought the first two seasons on DVD back into the late Noughties. Went into it with an open mind and looking forward to getting stuck in, but The Click didn't happen.
I was advised to stick with it, but didn't. It felt like work so I just lost the will to keep watching and probably didn't make it to the end of Season One. It felt like a failure at the time and I was a little frustrated at my lack of perseverance. I'm open to giving it another whirl at some point and seeing if I view it differently.
On the plus side, I did invest in and thoroughly enjoy some of the soundtracks from the series.

I'll second this one. I found the show confoundingly dull. I think I forced my way to early in the second season and found it to be a drudgery to watch. There are lots of shows I didn't like, but that's not the topic at hand. There are few shows whose appeal I find mystifying, but MAD MEN was one of them.

I've never gotten around to watching MAD MEN, but it was on my Netflix playlist for a while back when I frequented that service. I've always thought that the mid-century setting would appeal to me as well, but the "look" of the show seems like it would be slow-paced and too focused on corporate America. I might be off in my assumption, but that in itself has always pushed me away from watching MAD MEN on Netflix.

SONS OF ANARCHY. This was supposed to be as great as THE SHIELD and THE SOPRANOS, and its premise is absolutely my cup of tea.
But the tone and the cast just didn't do it for me. It doesn't have to be perfect, but there are some key elements that just have to be right from the very beginning.

EMPIRE, which is often heralded by fans as a DYNASTY successor, was one show that I heard a lot of friends talking about back when it first started. It was mega-popular with this group of young adult ladies that found it addictive. Apparently they had "viewing parties" or something similar because they'd watch EMPIRE at each other's house. I thought that was neat because it reminded me of such parties I've heard fans use to have for DYNASTY back in its prime.
I tried watching a few episodes of EMPIRE when I recorded them on my DVR, but it didn't click. Maybe because I hadn't watched from the start, but I found the show superficial and tired. I disliked THE SHIELD and THE SOPRANOS but enjoyed SONS*. I feel like there's a correlation of some sort there, but I don't know what it might be.
*I stopped watching in the last season because I suspected it was on a trajectory for a bad ending and I didn't want to subject myself to it.

Sometimes it can be a little off-putting when a show is being praised and hyped too much. And a viewing party with hysterical young women is probably not the best way to watch and enjoy a soap. (imho).

Well, I never watched EMPIRE in a group setting. I watched the episodes I had on my DVR and the first episode or two on Hulu once, but I never wanted to go any further.

I usually tend to steer clear of shows that are the trend or over hyped.
Dallas being the exception because I was a child when I was introduced to it, and the trend and the hype has been so totally worth it. Most other things to me are just ‘yeah whatever’.

Yes. I've never watched The Shield or The Sopranos. I've heard good things about them but neither has interested me.

This is probably not gonna fall in good soil with our British posters but I tried to watch "Coronation Street" when I was like 17 and I was bored to tears.
The pacing was too slow, there were plenty of characters and when one of the major plot is a missing cat...
I realized at that time that daytime soap operas really wasn't my thing.

In the UK Coronation Street, Eastenders, and Emmerdale are not daytime soaps. They are on in the evening, I guess they are primetime as they air between 7pm and 8.30pm I believe. I haven't really followed the daily serials all that much in my 40 years on this Earth either, so you're not alone.

Someone mentioned the Sopranos in a previous post and I gotta say I did like it but to me it was overrated. There are seasons I love and then there were times I got a little bored with it and would go away for awhile. I watched the entire last season and then came the final episode which I found really disappointing and I know a lot of other viewers did too. I think of that show and the first word I think of is overrated, I’m sorry.
