hard round for me, not seen that many outside Ingrid and Roberto Rossellini and if a film has sub titles I tend to doze off and lose the thread!!

You don't watch any British movies?
I know about Brexit but Great Britain is still a part of Europe so...

I tend to think of European movies as "abroad" or "foreign" but not English films
I could easily fill my 10 with british films but dont consider them "european" if that makes sense!!!

But i haven't seen a foreign film at the pictures for decades!! i cant concentrate if there are sub titles, i lose the thread of the plot and as I said before, I doze off!!!!
I make rare trips to the Cinema now, whereas 20 years ago went so often!

Same here, but for Swedish films. When I think "European films", I think British, German, French, Greek, Danish, Italian etc etc - but not Swedish. European films = foreign films. Swedish films = not foreign films. Therefore, I will not list any Swedish film, even though I could easily fill my Top 10 with only Swedish films. I will also not include any British films.

Though sometimes I feel that foreign movies are movies where the actors speak a language that I don't understand, which would exclude English-spoken movies.

No, but as I said in response to BF's post about her feeling that British movies aren't European movies - I feel the same regarding Swedish movies. Swedish movies ARE European movies, but that isn't my feeling about it. My feeling goes before my logic and knowledge in this case. Swedish movies ≠ European movies.

I think that has more to do with the fact that many British movies have a more international appeal. Swedish movies don't have that, although the Scandinavian crime series have become more popular.
Anyway, it's not like you have to list Swedish titles

I agree with you however there are some great Swedish films that are critically acclaimed globally such as The Seventh Seal, The Emigrant and Fanny and Alexander.

Also some Swedish films have broad enough appeal to have lead to Hollywood remakes (e.g the 1939 film Intermezzo is practically a scene by scene copy of the Swedish original and with the same lead actress).

I think the main reason why British films have wider international appeal than Swedish ones is because fewer people speak Swedish compared with English rather than it being due the relative quality of the films themselves.

When I think of Swedish films I think of a farmer and his wife who sit at the kitchen table drinking tea or whatever, speak a few words and in those 90/120 minutes nothing happens.
The kind of depressing movies that were shown by an alternative/arty broadcaster (in Holland that would be the VPRO).

When I think of good European movies I think of "interesting", rather than great or entertaining. I also like the 70s softcore movies (mostly German) because they're such fabulous time capsules, but these are definitely not good movies.

i got one but it's the only one i can think of and that's Black Sunday from (1960) but not the US version but the European cut of it that's longer and is gory for the time. directed by the late and great Mario Bava. another Bava film would be The Whip and the Body from (1963) with Christopher Lee' great film and worth a watch

Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie was a British writer who specialized in criminal novels. She was born 15th September 1890 in Torquay, Devon, Great Britain and died on 12th January 1976 in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, Great Britain. She was 85 years old when she died.

She had an American father and a British mother. She got married in 1914 and had a daughter. During the First World War she worked at a pharmacy where she learnt about poisons. She put her knowledge to use in her books. Her first novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles was published in 1920. Her marriage ended in 1925 when she found out that her husband had had an affair.

During her career Agatha Christie has written 84 books and she came to form the crime novel genre. Agatha Christie’s novels have sold in approximately 4 billion copies worldwide and has been translated into 103 languages. A lot of her novels have also been adapted to the big screen. Funnily enough, I just finished watching the BBC's 2016 adaptation of Witness for the Prosecution. Not strictly a film, but a two-part "mini-series", I guess you'd call it. Brilliant and very haunting -- the best Christie adaptation I've ever seen (not that I'm an expert). And written by Sarah Phelps so it contains some mighty fine swearing.

PS: Nobody here ever watched a Spanish film? Really? The fact most of them really suck nowadays doesn´t mean there aren´t a lot of them worthwhile watching! Also, think many Spanish directors are directing big-budgeted movies in Hollywood!
