Spotted: KL Actors in Other Roles

Jack Bannon - AKA Scott Easton - showed up in an episode of Cagney & Lacey I watched last night. He had a dodgy moustache in place of his well-groomed beard, so I didn't recognise him at all (I actually looked him up because the 'tache had me half-thinking he was David Lamb, the syphilis guy from Season Ten)

He's a rather good looking guy when he's smooth, proving my theory that facial hair is the ultimate deterrent:

From the opposite end of things, I did not recognize Jonathan Goldsmith (who played the ill-fated Frank Elliot on KL) as the "Most Interesting Man in the World" in the dos Equis commercials because of his heavy (but interesting) beard. The man has an IMDB page longer than my arm (he guest-starred in everything) but until I read a story about his being replaced on the commercials, I had no idea he had crossed paths with the Ewings of California.

John Pleshette played a lawyer in an episode of L.A. Law. It wasn't a big part, but I recognised him at once when he showed up in the opening scene.

I just watched the movie "The World According to Garp", and Mark Soper (aka the guy from the infamous Tidal Energy Plot) was in it. He played a student who went after the (female) teacher...And in "Wall Street", Millie Perkins had a small role.

Before he was a baby-snatching felon and before he was spotted moonlighting on Moonlighting, Jack Bannon played Doctor Melville in The Six Million Dollar Man: The Bionic Boy. Sharing the screen with Joan Van Ark, who played The Bionic Boy's sister, Val.

There was a clash of Knots eras in an LA Law I watched last night. Sam Behrens and Conchata Ferrell were making overtures towards two different members of the cast in separate storylines.

Behrens' second episode had him sharing scenes with an actor I was convinced had played Wayne Harkness (Season Four version - the guy who never needed to go to the dentist). But actually it was another actor called James Handy (Matt's father from Melrose Place). They probably don't look that much alike, but once my mind was made up there was no shifting it:

Clyde Kusatsu (Sid's doctor) turned up briefly on the premiere of 24 Legacy this week. I'm not sure exactly what he was supposed to be - presumably some sort of senior congressman.

Okay, she's not a "supporting player" but I think this is an appropriate place to post this (rather than starting a new thread)....

I watched a rerun of The $25,000 Pyramid this morning with Constance McCashin as a celebrity guest (Robert Mandan of Soap being the other). The timing of their replaying this episode was perfect: it seemed to be one of the first episodes of this version of Pyramid produced (if not the first). Dick Clark seemed to be over-explaining the show's rules and procedures, as if introducing a "new" program to the audience. McCashin had appeared on a previous version (The $10,000 Pyramid) as a contestant and won a chunk of money, so having her back as a celebrity guest was a nice nod to the past of the show as well as the present, since she was becoming well-known on Knots Landing in this 1982-ish period.

The best part? Clark, while making small talk, pointed out that McCashin had "just given birth" four months prior. She confirmed this, adding her son's name was 'Daniel Morgan'. And she was wearing the same blouse that she's wearing in my avatar photo, holding young Daniel Morgan Weisman!

Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peak's Bobby Briggs) plays Olivia's drug dealer.

Dennis Haysbert (President David Palmer from 24) makes a tiny appearance as a police officer.

Caught the second half of a movie called Cold River this morning, a survival tale geared to younger viewers. A brother and sister are left stranded in the Adirondacks when winter sets in very suddenly and their father is killed. The younger brother is played by Patrick Petersen. Though the film is said to have been released in 1982, it must have been filmed some time earlier because he looked a lot younger; it may have even been filmed prior to his being hired on Knots Landing. Despite his being so young, he gets to show off survival skills like hunting, shooting guns, even killing the man who tries to rape his sister. There's even a nifty scene where he fends off a hungry black bear. Karen would have been proud of little Michael!!

In the same episode was Stephen Macht who has a recurring role as David Keeler, Cagney's lover. In the same season, Cagney's brother is played by David Ackroyd, AKA Bill Medford.

Stephen Macht (Joe Cooper in Knots Landing) and Joan Van Ark play characters named Joe and Val in the fourth season of The Six Million Dollar Man, when Steve Austin had a moustache.

We might be seeing more of 'Harry Fisher' in the near future. CBS is considering doing a revival of Murphy Brown, and Joe Regalbuto has reportedly agreed to return to his role as Frank Fontana.

I've been rewatching Soap, my favorite sitcom of all time, if you can't tell by my avatar, and just saw an episode where both Ted Shackleford (yes, I know, not a supporting character) and Lynne Moody are guest stars. Moody had a short recurring role as a main character's love interest (interracial--shocking!), and Ted showed up as the most ridiculous caricature of a cowboy I've ever seen, threatening and mocking Billy Crystal's gay character.

I'm also a huge fan of Soap...one of the best shows (not just best sitcoms) in all of TV. If ever there was a show that deserved a reboot/continuation, this would be the one.

Another actor who appeared on both shows is Allan Miller. He played Dr. Posner, Jessica's doctor/suitor on Soap, and Scooter Warren, Laura's boss/suitor on KL.
