nah, while JR likely pushed behind the scenes for more ‘comedy’ and a younger love interest, the blame for that abject abomination of a storyline still falls fully on the shoulders of Uncle Lenny Katzman!

Miss Ellie was indeed a complex character. I never bought the cosy grandma vibe. She was perhaps the most dangerous Ewing of them all (to adapt a quote from crazy Claudia in Dynasty).

It seems like a variation of a trope/trope like description, something like 'the most unlikely villain is the one that is least suspected'.

Put another way, something like 'the best friend can do more damage than the worst enemy' because the best friend/good(presumably) character is the trusted one.

I don't know if "Dallas" had a good guy character. Maybe Bobby in the early years or Bobby/Pam as a duo (again, in the early years.)
Over time ,every character became more flawed.

"Dynasty" - I suppose Krystle, Jeff and Steven were the good ones, in general

Donna, IMHO, was really the only strong woman on Dallas
Granted, she benefitted from Sam Culver, but Donna didn't just coast on that.
Donna actively continued to grow with several projects and was successful with them.
I thought that as a couple, Donna and Ray were the underrated stabilizing force on the show.
Donna was intelligent, successful, accomplished, beautiful and far more ethical than the other main characters

Sue Ellen grew and evolved as the series as the series progressed, to be fair

Yep, Miss Ellie and Krystle. The two greatest soap kunts of all time.

People tend to be more sympathetic towards characters who remind them of themselves -- or remind them of what they'd like to be. And blame goes to whomever doesn't fit in to that.

Hence, Jock and JR are worthy of holy admiration. While well-intentioned Miss Ellie and Krystle, unable to navigate their respective corrupt environments (or be sufficiently written by dramatist disinterested in them), become "dangerous" and "an awful person".

Fascinating.

I wonder, how can you watch an old show from the 80s if you can´t stand any of its characters / actors? Has this something to do with your pool´s water (quoting Michael from "Melrose Place")? Or in the 21st Century, babies were being fed with acid milk?

I´m the most critical fan when it really deserves it (all after the Dream Season, with exceptions...?), but classic "Dallas" is classic "Dallas". It´s obvious that most of you didn´t live through the 80s and grew up watching Bobby, Pam, Lucy or Ellie. Sigh.

All Characters are analyzed and discussed for all aspects of their (fictional) actions/choices/lifestyles. Some characters are more likeable and/or interesting than others. Some people may find a character to be likeable and some may find the same character not to be likeable - it is the viewer's preferences, not an objective science. It is the nature of entertainment.

I love every single Dallas character.

I despise a few of them too.

I love that they're despicable. I love that they're interesting.

I grew up watching Dallas, and sometimes I am really critical of some of the characters (Jock specifically), but the reasons I criticize them are they reasons I found them to be so fascinating.

That´s fine, but I think there´s a lot of transference here. They are fiction, but some people seem to be actually criticizing them as if they were their spouses, their neighbors or their bosses. To each his own, but the lyrics of the song sound to me as "I judge I judge I judge"...

Miss Ellie is a very likable character imho, which makes her so interesting. If she wasn't likable and basically a good person in many ways her past errors wouldn't hit quite so hard.
This is what makes Dallas such a classic show. We'll written, layered characters that are not perfect but their humanity is wonderfully evident. Just as are so many characters in the Bible.
