Goodness me. I wasn’t expecting this to be Polly’s greatest hits, but this round has highlighted for me Karen’s role in the series as everybody’s best friend.
1. Karen and Val
Knots Landing
A female soap friendship that passes the Bechdel Test is a thing of beauty. I appreciated that this was a constant of the series, and it’s telling that there was a strange kind of absence during those times when there weren’t Val/Karen heart-to-hearts (when Val was in Shula, or after her death. And perhaps most notably when Karen was present-but-not-present during her drug addiction).
2. Karen and Richard
Knots Landing
We didn't get to see Richard's outwardly thoughtful side much on the series. Whenever we did, it usually involved Karen. I love how she could see his soft underbelly and especially like the scene where Richard provided a gourmet breakfast for Karen while she kept vigil over Sid at the hospital.
3. Karen and Gary
Knots Landing
A friendship in which both earned their stripes. The compromise, forgiveness and support between them was quite a journey to take. For viewers as much as the pair of them.
4. Miss Ellie and Donna
Dallas
A mutually respectful relationship. Most of the time at least. I always felt that these two could be honest with one another - even if it was painful - in a way that they never could be with anyone else. Including their spouses. Speaking of whom...
5. Clayton and Ray
Dallas
These two were kindred spirits, and the chemistry of a friendship built on a shared love of ranching was very convincing indeed. They didn't really have to say anything for the viewer to know they were connected.
Special mentions to:
Laura and Val
Knots
Walter and Matthew
Dynasty
I also really wanted to include Dynasty's Claudia and Steven based on their early interactions, but with them becoming lovers and eventually spouses it didn’t feel appropriate for this round.
