Men:
JR Ewing - Dallas - I can't think of any other iconic character in any soap ever.
Mack Mackenzie - Knots Landing - I preferred him to Gary or any of the other men.
Jeff Colby - Dynasty I think he was one of the genuine characters in the show, like you could believe everything that happened to him.
Chase Gioberti - Falcon Crest - A solid character who I loved watching.
Zach Powers - The Colbys - brilliantly acted and a great villain.

Women:
Sue Ellen Ewing - Dallas - absolutely my favourite soap lady ever, what's not to like? The way she was played, the accent, the fights with JR, her alcoholism, her longing for love and affection, she should have stayed with Dusty.
Karen Mackenzie - Knots Landing - she was well acted and a character I loved watching.
Alexis Colby Carrington Dexter Morrell - Dynasty - a character I loved because of her excessive nature, every outfit, every one liner, every swipe at any female character, her thirst for power - iconic moment - at the top of the stairs at the mansion when she throws Blake and Krystle out.
Maggie Gioberti - Falcon Crest - loved her storylines throughout the show and was genuinely shocked at the ending of her time on the show.
Sable Colby - The Colbys - what is there not to like about her - Stephanie Beacham played her very well, when she crossed over to Dynasty that was also a masterstroke by the writers, her fights with Alexis were excellent.

All from DYNASTY with two notable exceptions

The Men:

1) Al Corley's Steven: Sensitive and hot, his portrayal by Al Corley and the way he was written was the definition of ground-breaking in 1981.

2) Adam Carrington. As @Alexis said, he was just what the doctor ordered for DYNASTY in season 3, and his arc was the only one to keep an incoherent season 4 semi-coherent.

3)Dex Dexter: I did not like him for the first season (but I liked very little of season 4), but he and Oxenberg's Amanda were fascinating to watch as they cheated on the wife and mommy. And in season 9, he became the leading male of the show, with Alexis and Sable fighting over him, and he was actually worth the fight.

4) Lance Cumson was the hottest thing on Falcon Crest, and frankly for some years on all of TV. And unlike many other hunks (look at 5), Lorenzo Lamas could actually act.

5) Miles Colby: Young, fun, and full of rum. Or however it goes. I mean, look at #4 for a clue. :D

The Women:

1) Fallon Carrington in Season 1
From the witty lines to the sophisticated critique of the sexism and racism in corporate America's upper echelons, Fallon was the other ground-breaking character of season 1, together with her brother. Too bad the writers decided to let their sharp wit go dull as they only cared to sharpen the blade of Alexis' tongue once she came along.

2) Alexis: she needs no last name, and there would not have been three soapchat forums if not for her.

3) Sable Colby: Just like Morgan Fairchild on Flamingo Road (another short-lived soap caacelled after two years), Beacham infused the role with such magnetism, energy, and charisma, she made me want to watch the Colbys. At least while she was on it.

4) Sammy Jo Carrington: To live with her must have been torture. But to watch her toy with men, kidnap uncooperative aunts and take jibes as clueless Coleman's Steven was the opposite.

5) Sue Ellen: I am going to burn to the stake by Dallas orthodoxy priests, but I think she is what made the show a soap. From her affair with Cliff which forced writers to give up the stand alone episodes and serialize to the fact that she actually changed through the years, she was fascinating to watch, and Linda Grey could play her equally brilliant as victim and as a attacker--usually against J.R., but she did not limit herself. She was also one of the best things about TNT's Dallas (though we are limiting ourselves to the 80s).

Does that mean that John Ross is Junior Junior, or mini-Junior?

Well it was Jock who seemingly named the boy; when he announced John Ross Ewing III to the world, in April 1979, (episode John Ewing III Part 2). I do see where you are coming from with the humour, such is the nature of the name. John Ross Ewing IV is probably now roaming about DALLAS land, with either Elena Ramos, Emma Ryland or Pamela Rebecca Barnes Ewing as the mama. Ole Jock and Mr. DALLAS himself J.R. would be so proud.

All mine will be Dallas because it's the only 80s soap I've seen.

Men

1. JR Ewing - the innovative, groundbreaking character that become a cultural icon. The idea of having "the cool bad guy" as the most featured character of a primetime show was something nobody was doing and it revolutionized TV.

2. Jock Ewing - the head of the family. He was the man who set the standard his sons tried to live up to. Jock built Ewing Oil from the ground up and also saved Southfork from being taken by the bank. He was an impressive, admirable man.

3. Bobby Ewing - he tried to be a good man even though he sometimes fell short. His rivalry with JR and his romances with Pam and April are all classic Dallas.

4. Cliff Barnes - my God he was an annoying man! Just such a weasely little weasel! That made him the perfect enemy for the Ewing family. He would stop at nothing to try to hurt the Ewings, even if he had to hurt his sister in the process.

5. Jeremy Wendell - a great but very underutilized character. He was a cold, calculating businessman who was a great adversary for the Ewings and could be very comedic too in his own way.

Women

1. April Stevens - What a great addition to the cast she was! She had such a great, positive energy and made any scene with her better because of it. She was the only woman ever to be able to be friends with JR, Bobby and Cliff at the same time. Great character development as she goes from a greedy gold digger to a wonderful, kind, sweet lady.

2. Pamela Ewing - a great character who was caught in the middle of the Barnes - Ewing feud. She was insecure and flighty, leaving Bobby more than once, but she had a good heart.

3. Miss Ellie - the mama of the family who always tried to keep her family together. Not always the nicest lady, but she was basically very good and the rock that held the family together after Jock died.

4. Lucy Ewing - started out as a great character who they unfortunately ran out 0f ideas for, but when she was the rebellious wild child in the early days of the show she was a compelling character.

5. Jenna Wade - she was Bobby's first love and almost ended up marrying him twice. She was an excellent addition to the show when they cast Priscilla Presley to play her and made her a main character.

THE WOMEN:

1. Alexis Colby

MV5BMTYzNTI1NDE3N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzU2MjYzMzE@._V1_.jpg

I just adore her. She is glamorous, fun, bitchy, and ruthless, and she steals every scene she's in. I never get tired of looking her. So dynamic and effervescent, she lights up the screen. Surely one of the most fabulous creations ever to exist in Soapland. Oh and a style icon too.

2. Sue Ellen Ewing
What to say about Sue Ellen that hasn't already been said? One of the most complex women of the soaps, she could be many things, but she was never boring. Feisty, yet vulnerable, sometimes very warm, sometimes stone cold, and Linda played it all so beautifully.

3. Sable Colby
Sable was another one who was very tough but also very vulnerable and emotional. Her family, her marriage, her status as Mrs. Jason Colby meant everything to her and she would stop at nothing to hang on to them. Loved all her scheming and love how Stephanie Beacham sunk her teeth into the role with such fervour.

4. Angela Channing
The queen of the Tuscany Valley, and she ruled it with an iron fist. Calculating, manipulative and sometimes cruel, but also quite witty and I enjoyed her sense of humour.

5. Abby Ewing
It was a toss up between Abby and Katherine Wentworth for my final spot, but considering we got many more years of fun and scheming out of Abby she gets my vote. Her ability to always come out on top and wangle her way out of the many sticky situations she got herself into was unsurpassed. Probably one of the most savvy of the Soapland schemers.

THE MEN:

1. JR Ewing

5ed4971932acfb7fc7dde272e4c46c24.jpg

A formidable character played by a formidable actor, and he does it with such gusto. We revel in JR's schemes almost as much as he does. So much more than your cardboard cut out villain, there were many layers to JR. Ruthless and resourceful in business, feared by many, and with good reason, yet driven by his own insecurities and need for his father's approval. He's the character that really put Dallas on the map and made it so much fun to watch.

2. Richard Channing

Like JR, Richard had charm in abundance and carried out his schemes with a smile on his face. He had possibly one of the most deliciously dark and mysterious backgrounds of any character in Soapland. Driven by a need to belong and a simmering rage at being spurned by anyone he could call family, you couldn't help but feel for him, yet this rage often manifested itself in cruelty, which of course made for great TV!

3. Bobby Ewing

Bobby was for the most part the good brother, the Abel to JR's Cain, and the Romeo to Pam's Juliet. Wholesome, hunky and warm-hearted, but he could also be bad tempered and aggressive. His feud with JR and his relationship with Pam gave us many years of wonderful drama. And kudos to Bobby for having the most emotional death scene of the primetime soaps.

4. Adam Carrington

Another outcast with a great backstory, Adam was the bad apple that didn't fall far from the tree, as we saw when he joined forces with mummy dearest in season 3 of Dynasty. He was possibly the best addition to the original cast after Alexis, and we got plenty of mileage and great drama from his ongoing resentment for his father and his brother.

5. Gary Ewing

Gary had his flaws, like all the Ewing sons, but he actually grew to be probably the most self aware of the lot of them. He managed to overcome many of his demons and really grew as a character over the 14 seasons of Knots. Ted Shackleford had a great screen presence and I enjoyed his laugh! Not many people laugh much in Soapland so that was always refreshing.
